In oktober 2008 zal er voor het eerst een groot PDC-toernooi in Nederland plaatsvinden. Bij de uitreiking van de PDC Awards werd gisteren aangekondigd dat het nieuwe European Open in Nederland neer zal strijken. Naast dat toernooi komt er nog een tv-toernooi. De Players Championships Finals zal een eindtoernooi worden voor de Players Championship-cyclus. De beste 32 over alle Players Championships mogen aantreden in het tv-toernooi, dat in januari 2009 voor het eerst gehouden zal worden.

Komende zomer zal de PDC ook voor het eerst Azië aandoen met een groot toernooi. Dat toernooi krijgt de naam 'Asian Masters'. De locaties en exacte data van de nieuwe toernooien zijn nog niet bekend. Het totale prijzengeld op de PDC Tour zal komend jaar vier miljoen pond bedragen.

"De wereldwijde expansie van het professionele darts gaat door in de Verenigde Staten, Zuid-Afrika, Australië en Duitsland. Ook doen we dit jaar Canada en Azië aan", zegt voorzitter Hearn op de officiële PDC website. "Het prijzengeld zal de komende jaren groeien tot de tien miljoen pond per jaar."

Hearn vervolgt: "Er bestaat geen twijfel. Er is maar één plaats voor spelers met ambitie en talent om professioneel darts te spelen. Dat is bij de PDC."

Eind vorig jaar liet de PDC weten haar handen af te trekken van de twee grote Nederlandse toernooien. De afgelopen twee jaar maakten de PDC-spelers deel uit van de World Darts Trophy en International Darts League. Met het European Open gaat de Professional Darts Corporation voor het eerst zelfstandig door in Nederland.

JELLE KLAASEN and Wayne Mardle are the two Wildcard selections for the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts.

The announcement of the two Sky Sports Wildcards completes the field for the £400,000 tournament, which begins on Thursday February 5 at the Echo Arena Liverpool.

Klaasen, the 2006 Lakeside champion and a quarter-finalist in the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship recently, will join world number six Mervyn King as a newcomer to the Premier League this year.

The 24-year-old Dutchman celebrated his second year in the PDC by moving up to 25th in the Order of Merit, qualifying for the Blue Square UK Open, Las Vegas Desert Classic and European Championship before starring at Alexandra Palace.

He dropped only one set in wins over Colin Lloyd, Jan van der Rassel and Andy Hamilton, before Raymond van Barneveld ended his hopes in the last eight.

"I'm delighted to be involved," said Klaasen. "Behind the World Championship, the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts is one of the biggest tournaments to be involved in.

"It's the top six players and you play each other twice, and for me it's brilliant because I will get so much experience of playing on stage and in front of such big crowds.

"I have always wanted to play in front of such big crowds and it's going to make me practice even more to make sure I play well.

"I'll enjoy all the matches but I want to win every one of them too!"

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn said: "Jelle's displays in the last year proved that he has matured into a player who can compete at the very highest level on a consistent basis.

"He is a fine player and a great ambassador as the future of darts who will have a great future at the top level of our sport.

"Both Jelle and Wayne will make this the most exciting field yet for the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts.

"I can't wait for it to kick off next month, and I'm sure neither can the nearly 80,000 fans who will pack into venues around the UK in the next four months and the viewers on Sky Sports."

Mardle returned to the Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts in 2008, only missing out on a play-off place on the final league night.

A finalist in two Las Vegas Desert Classics and the World Matchplay, as well as a five-time World Championship semi-finalist, he reached the last four at Blackpool last year, including a win over van Barneveld.

"I am over the moon," said Mardle. "Apart from the Ladbrokes.com World Championship, this is the biggest thing in darts.

"You're playing front of amazing crowds, who love the darting entertainment and all the stresses and pleasures that go with it - and I think it works for me!

"Hopefully I'll give them loads to cheer about and I can't wait for the first week in Liverpool."

He added: "In the first couple of years I struggled with the format - I struggled with losing a game and then going back the next week.

"Last year I had a typically bad start and put myself in a bit of bother but I never looked like finishing bottom after the sixth or seventh week.

"This year, I know exactly what I have to do and what to expect from the ups and downs of a league format. Now I know I can do it, I haven't got any problems and losing a game isn't the end of the world."

Mardle and Klaasen join the top six players from the PDC Order of Merit, Phil Taylor, James Wade, Raymond van Barneveld, John Part, Terry Jenkins and Mervyn King, in the 2009 Whyte & Mackay Premier League Darts.

Fitton wint Dutch Open darts

VELDHOVEN - De Engelse profdarter Darryl Fitton heeft de 31e editie van het Dutch Open op zijn naam gebracht. De 46-jarige routinier, een van de weinige groten die de 'oude' bond BDO tot dusver trouw is gebleven, versloeg in de spannende finale de Nederlander Willy van der Wiel met 3-2 in sets.

Het leverde hem de hoofdprijs van 4500 euro op. In de halve eindstrijd had Fitton zijn landgenoot Tony O’Shea uitgeschakeld.

Bij de vrouwen zegevierde Trina Gulliver in Veldhoven voor de derde keer in haar carrière. De Engelse favoriete was in acht legs te sterk voor Julie Gore uit Wales: 5-3.

Gore had in de halve finale de droom van Francis Hoenselaar op succes voor eigen publiek verstoord. De Rotterdamse onttroonde vorige maand in Frimley Green na zeven jaar eindelijk Gulliver als koningin van de Lakeside.

Blijft toch een mooi toernooi en lastig voor de toppers. Ik heb ze regelmatig 3-2 zien spelen en er kwamen ook matchpijlen tegen voorbij.

THE 2009 European Championship will be held at the Claus Hotel & Event Center in Holland.

The inaugural European Championship was held in Frankfurt last year, and won by Phil Taylor.

This year, the tournament switches to Holland to be staged in the Ballroom at the Claus Hotel & Event Center, situated close to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in Hoofddorp.

The 2009 tournament will be held from Thursday October 29-Sunday November 1, and tickets start at just ¤10 per session.

The European Championship will feature 32 players competing for £200,000, with the winner taking home £50,000.

The top 16 players from the PDC Order of Merit at October 26 will be joined by the top eight non-qualified players from the Players Championship Order of Merit and the top eight non-qualified players from the European Order of Merit.

The players from the European Order of Merit will come from a one-year Order of Merit, including the Players Championships in Leiden and the German Darts Championship held following last year's European Championship, plus all Players Championships held in 2009.
