Ghostbusters 3 Confirmed

It looks like a third Ghostbusters film might actually happen after-all. The catch is, it will be completely computer animationed.

Dan Aykroyd confirmed that an animated Ghostbusters 3 is in development while doing an interview for CISN fm.
quote:
“Ghostbusters 3 lives today. A year ago it didn’t.”

“I wrote a script called Hell Bent, Ghostbusters go to hell basically. The premise is that it’s Manhellton. There’s Manhattan and ManHELLton. And if you can build an inter-dimensional phase system so that you can go from one dimension to another. We’ve succeeded doing that and we go to the hell side.

Downtown, Folley Square - where the cops are, they’re all blue minotaurs. Central Park is this huge deep mine, green demons there, surrounded by black onyx thousand foot high apartment buildings with classic red devils. Very wealthy. And we go visit a Donald Trump like character - Mr. Siffler. Lou Siffler, Lucifer. So I will say we meet the devil in it.

It won’t happen as a live action because Billy [Murray] won’t come on to the live action but he will voice his part, as a CGI animated project.

With CGI, and animation, the way these cartoons are done, we can do everything I wrote in that script for a lot less money.”
So there you have it. I’ve never liked the Ghostbusters in Hell concept that much, and Aykroyd’s detailed explaination doesn’t make it sound any more appealing.

Harold Ramis, who co-wrote both films and played Dr. Egon Spengler has been trying to get the project off the ground for a couple years now. Ramis’ plan included the casting of a new Ghostbuster played by Ben Stiller, and the return of Dan Aykroyd and Rick Moranis.

You can read our indepth report from last year about the progress of getting Ghostbusters 3 off the ground here.

The GhostBusters
aanvullinkje
en nog eentje:

According to a radio interview with Dan Aykroyd at CISN FM, not only is the third "Ghostbusters" movie, subtitled 'Hellbent', back on but it will be in the form of a CG animated feature.

The news came completely out of left field as months ago Aykroyd himself stated that plans for a sequel were essentially dead, a lot of that due to Bill Murray's reluctance to be a part of the film.

Now it seems Murray has apparently given the CG version his blessing and agreed to reprise the voice of his character, Peter Venkman, from the original films in the new feature.

Of the new film's story, Aykroyd says "We go to the hell side of Manhattan, downtown, Foley Square. It's all where the cops are--they are all blue minotaurs. Central Park is this huge peat mine with green demons there, surrounded by black onyx thousand-foot high apartment buildings with classic red devils, very wealthy. We go and visit a Donald Trump-like character who is Mr. Sifler. Luke Sifler. Lu-cifer. So we meet the devil in it".

Aykroyd also spoke a little about what happened since we last heard from him - "It won't happen as a live-action, because Billy will not come on in the live-action stage anymore for it, but he will voice his part and we're looking to do it as a CGI-animated project. It lives. It lives today. Last year it didn't. This year it lives. With CGI animation and the way these cartoons are done, we can do everything I ever wrote in that script for much less money."

quote:
I wish I could tell you more but its looking more and more like you WILL see all the Ghostbusters (including a REAL 3rd film and Bill Murray) within a couple years.

Sorry for the tease...I know a lot more but I cant publicly say anymore. Just thought you'd all want to hear the positive news.
quote:
Not CGI...live action. including toys of everyone with likenesses...and dont worry about them looking old in the jumpsuits...Aykroyd has figured out a great way to pull it off. Ive been told all the actors are signed on and if they can make the budget work its greenlit.
quote:
Im working on being involved so if I said any more I could jepordize that.

Ive been told the entire plot and its great...its the perfect way to do it. Ive been told all the Ghostbusters have signed back on plus some pretty cool new Ghostbusters. i was told they will fully license all likenesses for all movies once this movie is a 'go'.

Its all a matter of nailing the budget down now.

It could all be bullshit but it came from someone at the studio that would know.
quote:
I'd heared rumours about a third live action movie, then, as it turns out, I have a friend who's doing conceptual art for it. So yes. It's happening.

Exclusive: New Ghostbusters Closer Than We Think?
quote:
We just heard what might possibly be one of the coolest rumors to come across our virtual desk in a long time. This information comes from a very reliable source who cannot, at this point, be named, but they are telling us that a new Ghostbusters film may be happening sooner than we all think.

According to our source all four Ghostbusters -- Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson -- have agreed to return to the franchise. A few years ago that would have been downright unbelievable, but considering they all just got back into their roles for the Ghostbusters videogame, it’s more than plausible that they’d do it on-camera one more time.

Now here’s the really interesting part; though not much is known about the plot, apparently the ‘Busters will be handing over their proton packs to Seth Rogan and the crew from 40 Year Old Virgin! Some may roll their eyes at this, but think about it; these guys are doing the same thing Murray, Ramis, Ivan Reitman, John Candy and their whole crew did back in the 80’s, churning out comedy after comedy, so it makes sense they’d take over these reins as well.

Of course all of it hinges on a budget, classic Hollywood story, but hopefully there’s a studio out there smart enough to know that the fans want at least one more Ghostbusters movie (hell, if done right, possibly a new franchise) and make this sucker happen.

Keep it here for more as we learn it!

Are these guys the new Ghostbusters?

Ghostbusters 3 News

By George 'El Guapo' Roush on September 5, 2008

I love the Ghostbusters movies. Well, I love the first one anyway. The second reeked of studio head interference and shitty references to whatever was currently "hot" at the time (Bobby Brown). Still, I will be buying both when they're released on Blu-Ray.

Now comes news from the trades that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, writers of the hit television show The Office, wrote a script for a part 3 that brings back the original cast of Ghostbusters. I'm sure a lot of this has to do with the buzz surrounding the videogame coming out soon featuring the voice talents of the original cast, but this is pretty cool that they're writing up a script for a third film.

Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.

The scribes just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.

"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then "Spider-Man." An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage. Sources said so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment.

No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.

The scribes, who are Emmy- nominated for their work on "The Office," just set up another picture at Columbia, selling their spec script "Bad Teacher" to the studio for Jimmy Miller to produce.

Worst case scenario:
Know what I think when I read about the star salaries being too much for the studio to handle? I see this as nothing more than cameos by the original cast, who I'm sure are retired, having to come out and train new Ghostbusters because they're too old for the job. You know how Hollywood is. They want the 'fresh, hip, young crowd' in their movies. You have cameos, you pay cameo money, then you have some dickheads who can't act (like Jimmy Fallon) star in the movie.

Best case scenario:
They pay them whatever they can to get them on board to do a third. I'm sure for Aykroyd, that would only require some peanuts and front row tickets to a play, but to get Bill Murray, they may have to open their wallets a bit.

We know Rick Moranis has quit acting. Fine, that's his decision, but imagine if they got everyone back for a third? With today's special and visual effects it would kick ass. Let's hope Sony can get this one done. Let's also hope this number 3 fares better than the last number 3 they had with an emo Peter Parker hip spasming his way down the sidewalk.

Forget Spider-Man 4. Put that money towards Ghostbusters!!

Harold Ramis confirms 'Ghostbusters III'

I just received this e-mail from Harold Ramis confirming the forward progress on a third "Ghostbusters" movie (as mentioned earlier here), with Judd Apatow, some of his regular actors and perhaps Bill Murray involved:

"yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point. everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there.
best,
harold

OK, so we're picturing Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson showing the ghost-busting ropes to Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco and Michael Cera. (Ramis already memorably and warmly played Rogen's dad in "Knocked Up.") Maybe Jason Segel or Craig Robinson fit in there somewhere.

Is this a "Ghostbusters" you'd want to call?

In an interview at a "City of Ember" at this year's FantasticFest, Bill Murray talked about the recently announced "Ghostbusters 3" and whether he would be involved:

"Well, I think the wounds from Ghostbusters 2 have healed. Supposedly they have hired two guys from The Office to write a script. So, that could work. I think that is a good idea. Maybe they will give us a fresh look at it. I've always liked our characters. Our characters are funny. We had a lot of fun making the movies. The first one was really a lot of fun to make. But I worry.

I think the first forty minutes of Ghostbusters is about as funny as a movie gets. It didn't have a lot of special effects in it. There were just a couple. It was just about those funny characters in that world. And I liked that movie. I think the first one had sixty plate shots, or something like that.

The second one had hundreds. The special (effects) guys got their hands on the script early, and it was just gone. It went away. The script just went away. And it was hard to wrangle, because it was tied all around the effects. It wasn't about the story coming first, or the characters moving through it.

They are hard movies to write, and Dan really caught it with that first one. He really caught it. The characters were fun to do. I did the video game this summer, and it was fun to do it again. I found myself walking down Fifth Avenue, singing that song. And people were like, 'God, that guy is really full of himself.' So, there you go."

Sigourney Weaver talked with MTV News the other day and the actress was candid about sequels to two of her most popular franchises - "Alien" and "Ghostbusters".

First up the good news, a fifth "Alien" with the original classic's director Ridley Scott involved isn't as out of the question as previously rumored. "There’s definitely unchartered territory for Ripley. Both of us feel a kind of commitment to that woman. He’s as much responsible for who she is as I am" says Weaver.

There's a catch though - Ellen Ripley may show up, but the HR Giger-designed xenomorphs may not. Her interest in the creature has obviously waned, the actress wondering if "there’s unchartered territory for a creature who’s become somewhat debased by this computer generated thing. I haven’t seen ["Alien Vs. Predator"] but I just think if you overexpose the creature, that’s a mistake."

Then she dropped the quote that will have fans intrigued - "We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien]. Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film]. What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives."

Weaver also admits that she's heard the "Ghostbusters 3" talk and is "supposed to get in touch with Bill [Murray] next week. I would hope that my little Oscar would be one of the Ghostbusters even if I’m not in it."

The actress also laughed about the possibilities for the characters such as hers ending up with Murray "Does he think we got married or something?".

Ramis: “We’re all going to be in it in different kinds of roles,” Ramis said. “We’re going to be the sage mentors. There are going to be young Ghostbusters.”

Aykroyd Confirms Ghostbusters 3 Is All Go
20 May 2009 5:15 AM, PDT

Dan Aykroyd has confirmed the third Ghostbusters movie is all set to go before the cameras - with the original cast in place to reprise the characters from the 1984 film.

The movie star reveals Sigourney Weaver has signed on for the project, alongside himself, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson - and the film could start shooting this winter.

Aykroyd still fears the project could "blow up" "at any second" but he hopes the new film will herald in a new generation of all-girl Ghostbusters.

He tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "I'd like it to be a passing-of-the-torch movie. Let's revisit the old characters briefly and happily and have them there as family but let's pass it on to a new generation."

And the actor wants Alyssa Milano and Eliza Dushku to consider becoming part of the Ghostbusters family: "I think they're amazing."

Weaver: male roles boosted my career
Updated on 11 December 2009
By Lewis Hannam

Speaking ahead of the premiere of the £300m sci-fi film Avatar, Sigourney Weaver says roles for strong women come across like an "angry gym teacher", and it is often easier just to take parts written for men.

The actress also sparked speculation about plans for Ghostbusters 3 by saying she had seen the script and was not averse to being in the new movie.

She told Channel 4 News: “I have taken lots of parts intended for men in the past. Sometimes when writers try to write strong roles for women it comes across like an angry gym teacher.

"So when a woman just gets to play someone who’s good at her job, who is straight forward, they often think that a lot of the work is done for them because they don’t have to re-tool it.

"It’s just a person though. It’s up to me to bring everything to that particular character. I don’t have an axe to grind, it [getting men’s roles] just seems to be one of the ways that I get to be in more films."

Weaver worked with Avatar director James Cameron on Aliens in 1986, and says her ability to keep attracting big roles can be attributed to her attitude to get stuck in.

She told Channel 4 News: "I just have a different perspective, having loved literature so much. If you read great books and plays there are always interesting parts for many ages, and great stories including a lot of older women as well. People know I am up for anything, I’m pretty game.

"I just have this attitude – I started working, off, off Broadway. To me films are still like that experimental feeling, I get so excited about that. I think as I get older I’m more aware of what a privilege it is to work with different generations of actors. If anything it’s my philosophy – with a new job I’m like 'yes'."

Ghostbusters 3 'is happening'

Weaver also confirmed that rumours of her involvement in Ghostbusters 3 were not completely wide of the mark, despite previous comments to the contrary. She revealed potential new details of the planned film which have subsequently caused a stir of excitement on movie websites.

She told Channel 4 News: "I’m afraid to say it [Ghostbusters 3] is happening, I hope people are excited about that. I don’t know if I’m going to be in it, I have had a couple of calls asking ‘would you read the script’.

"I know that my little son Oscar – who was kidnapped from me – I think he has grown up to be a ghostbuster.

"I might be in it; I see nothing wrong with being in it, although I don’t think I will have a big part. I think Bill Murray has a little more to do with it - he’s a ghost."

The other week it was Sigourney Weaver, this week Harold Ramis tells Heeb Magazine that in regards to "Ghostbusters 3", it seems that "something's going to happen" with the project.

"Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel.

We'll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future...GB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011."

Ivan Reitman to Direct 'Ghostbusters 3'!
Good news, everybody! Whilst doing the press line at the National Board of Review's red carpet event, MTV's Josh Horowitz volleyed a series of Ghostbusters 3 questions off of producer Ivan Reitman and ended up getting a nice chunk of actual news instead of further conjecture. When asked about the script, Ivan confirmed that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky have already turned in a completed draft for part 3 and that a new draft is currently being worked through, much to the delight of all involved. When asked about a potential start date, Ivan revealed that he hopes to start shooting it within the next year.

With this news it looks like what was once assumed to be Ghostbusters for a new generation is instead a reunion for the principals involved with the first two films. Reitman, of course, produced and directed both the 1984 original and it's 1989 sequel, so it's comforting to know that he is now returning over twenty years later for the new film. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver are all, barring some kind of cataclysmic, joy-hating turn of events, returning as well (I haven't seen confirmation on Ernie Hudson). And if that's not good enough news, even Rick Moranis is said to be willing to leave retirement to reprise his role as their accountant, Louis Tully!

Given that it has been twenty years since the last Ghostbusters motion picture (the characters have transferred to a handful of other mediums since then, most notably the recent video game made by Atari), I'm sure that Columbia pictures would like the new film to function as a possible gateway for further films, but with Reitman and friends all coming back for it, we can at least rest assured that it won't solely be a passing of the torch.

Oh, and as far as the Bill Murray as a ghost rumor that Sigourney Weaver started is concerned, Ivan Reitman wouldn't comment other than to say that there are some "very cool things in the new draft."
