Ringo Starr is to present Oasis with their outstanding achievement award at next month's Brit Awards, it has been claimed.

The former Beatle is understood to have been asked to give the Gallagher brothers the award at the event in London.

Apparently Johnny Depp was set to make the presentation but has been forced to pull out, presenting Noel and Liam with an opportunity to meet Starr for the first time.

Ringo's son, Zak Starkey, is the current drummer in Oasis, having replaced Alan White in 2005 and played on their last LP, Don't Believe The Truth.

The 2007 Brit Awards take place at London's Earls Court on February 14 and will be presented by British comedian Russell Brand.

Scissor Sisters, the Killers, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Take That, and Oasis are expected to be among the ceremony live performers.

That started a problem beforehand and then they had a huge row over who should keep the award.” The source continued: “The band had their own sound team do there was no excuse for Liam not being on the money. The arguments have rumbled on since and they’re barely speaking.”

An Oasis album is reportedly planned for the end of 2007.

Heel soms twijfel ik, sinds Don't Believe in the Truth, of ik Love Like a Bomb niet leuker vind. Dat wordt echter gestuurd door de nieuwigheid van het nummer en het album. Want als ik dan Live Forever een tijdje niet gehoord heb en hij komt ergens langs of je hoort een flard van dat nummer uit een voorbijrijdende auto waaien dan weet ik je het direct weer zeker. Noel Gallagher played his biggest ever solo gig in London tonight (March 26).

Headlining the Royal Albert Hall for the first of this year's Teenage Cancer Trust shows, the Gibson Guitars sponsored night saw the Oasis leader mixing his own songs with a host of classic covers.

Kicking off his set accompanied by bandmate Gem Archer and percussionist Terry Kirkbride, who has played at previous solo shows, Gallagher opened the evening with a series of his acclaimed b-sides including 'Talk Tonight' and '(It's Good) To Be Free'.

He then introduced his star collaborator of night in typically comic style.

"So as it's the Teenage Cancer Trust and as it's the Albert Hall, I'd like to introduce - somewhat predictably - Paul Weller," proclaimed the guitarist as the Modfather linked up for an ecstatically received version of The JAM's 'Butterfly Collector' and a cover of The Beatles' 'All You Need Is Love'.

Gallagher was then joined by an all-female string section for the rest of the gig which include an outing for Oasis' third album.

"Every time we go on tour, on that bandwagon, people say 'why don't you play songs of 'Be Here Now''," explained Gallagher. "So this evening we're going to play a song off 'Be Here Now'. I don't think this has ever been played before, for obvious reasons."

The guitarist then performed 'Don't Go Away', before moving onto a rare live performance of 'Definitely Maybe' vinyl bonus track 'Sad Song'.

With the evening's special feel, many fans began calling for Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher before a stripped down version of 'Wonderwall', forcing his brother to explain his absence.

"I did ask Liam if he'd come down tonight," joked Gallagher, "but he used the worlds 'fuck' and 'charity' in the same sentence."

The Oasis boss then stunned the crowd with another cover as he introduced as his "favourite song ever".

Performing a beautiful version of The Smiths' 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out', Gallagher - dressed in a brown blazer and back shirt - recalled the first time he had ever played the song acoustically, in Russia at the weekend (March 25).

"I did this in Moscow the other night, but I don't think The Smiths have sold any fucking records in Russia," he observed. "I got to the chorus and thought 'they're going to have it in a minute' - no."

Finishing up the night with a host of Oasis hits including 'Don't Look Back In Anger', which he dedicated to "the kids" benefiting from the Teenage Cancer Trust's work, Gallagher rounded off the evening covering The Beatles again, this time with 'Strawberry Fields'.

Including versions of singles 'Same Jeans', 'Superstar Tradesman' and 'Wasted Little DJs', the Dundee band also surprised the audience covering The Squeeze's 'Up The Junction'.

Highlights and interviews from tonight's gig are due to be broadcast on Virgin Radio between 4-8pm tomorrow (March 7).

Noel Gallagher is not preparing to launch into a solo career nor will he be playing at Glastonbury this June, as have been strongly suggested in some circles. He is an avid fan of the festival and will no doubt be on site checking out a few of his favourite bands again this year. Noel, along with Gem, have had a great time performing their semi acoustic shows recently and will continue to do so when it feels like a good idea, however Glastonbury is not on the agenda.

"I think since 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants' (2000) we've been trying to prove a point of just bass, drums, guitar and vocals and nothing fancy. But I kind of fancy, like, making an absolutely fucking colossal album. You know? Like literally two orchestras, stuff like that."

The band are bringing out the on-the-road film on DVD on October 29.

The movie follows Oasis on their last world tour, taking in 26 countries and two million fans, and features unique backstage access and interviews with the whole band.

The release also features new Noel Gallagher-fronted title track, 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down', over the film's credits.

The film was shot in black and white by director Baillie Walsh who has also worked with Massive Attack, Spiritualized, New Order and Kylie Minogue.

The DVD release will feature the full-length film - and edited version was shown on British TV last year - along with a host of extras.

Footage of a Noel Gallagher fan Q&A is also included, while the whole band have provided an alternative 'directors commentary' to the film.

Additionally, the release will feature a second disc with footage from the band's homecoming show at Manchester City's Eastlands Stadium on July 2, 2005. The concert, shot in high definition colour, includes 16 tracks, along with a montage of pictures sent in by fans. To whet you appetite you can read NME.COM's review from those shows online now.

Meanwhile Oasis have confirmed that they "are currently preparing a brand new album for release in 2008".

The track is available via Oasisinet.com and comes in a digital bundle including two live tracks from the group's City Of Manchester Stadium shows in 2005, 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'The Meaning Of Soul', the latter of which is available immediately.

A video for the song will premiere on Youtube next week (October 1), the same day the song will be first played on radio. Meanwhile, the DVD of the 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' film will be released on October 29.

Guitarist Noel Gallagher also turns DJ tonight (September 24), taking to the air on Radio 1 from 9pm.

Meanwhile guitarist Noel Gallagher is also celebrating the birth of his son, who was born at the weekend (September 22).
