quote:Top Gear presenter 'nearly died'
Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has revealed he was "close to death" after he crashed in a jet-powered car. The 36-year-old had been driving a 300 mph jet-powered dragster when it veered off the track at Elvington airfield, near York, in September. Mr Hammond was treated for a brain injury at Leeds General Infirmary.
The father-of-two has described in the Daily Mirror how he was "utterly terrified" and had a "50/50" chance of surviving the accident. Mr Hammond said: "Doctors use a points system. Fifteen is normal, three is a flatline. I was a three. I was that close to being dead."
"It was 50/50 what was going to happen. I may have been dead, I may not have woken up." The accident happened as Hammond was attempting a land speed record as he was being filmed. Mr Hammond told the newspaper he still did not know "what went wrong".
At one stage, surgeons had considered drilling a "bore hole" into his head to drain the blood from his brain to relieve the swelling, but the operation was not deemed necessary.
His severe injury reduced him to a "child-like state" in which he became obsessed with Lego, which he said helped him recover.
He suffered short-term memory loss, became disorientated and also endured "excruciating" pain, for which he was prescribed morphine.
Mr Hammond, nicknamed "Hamster", went on to describe his wife Mindy, also 36, as "a rock" who had kept calm throughout his ordeal.
However, he spoke of his heartache at witnessing his eldest daughter Izzy, six, cry as she and her sister Willow, three, left the hospital after visiting him.
The BBC has confirmed Mr Hammond had signed a two-year contract before his accident.
A spokeswoman said: "The contract pre-dates the accident."
She said the corporation could not confirm the return of Top Gear or any other future projects until it had received an update on Hammond's progress.

"He's completely fixed after his minor crash... the only thing that's really breaking his heart is he has chipped one of his whitened teeth," he said.
Clarkson, speaking at the Motor Show in Birmingham, said there were no plans to change Top Gear following the incident.
He said senior people at the BBC told him "you carry on, do what you do".
Hammond, 36, had been driving a 300mph jet-powered dragster when it veered off the track at Elvington airfield, near York, on 20 September.
He was treated for a brain injury at Leeds General Infirmary before being transferred to a hospital in Bristol, near where he lives.
Clarkson said Hammond still had to take it easy: "He's got to rest because although there's nothing actually wrong with him, it's better he just has some time off, writes his book, sells his story.
"We're getting texts from him every five minutes: 'I can't believe I'm not there, I really want to come,'" he added.
Investigations continue
The BBC recently confirmed Hammond had signed a two-year contract before his accident.
A spokeswoman said: "The contract pre-dates the accident."
She said the corporation could not confirm the return of Top Gear or any other future projects until it had received an update on the presenter's progress.
The final part of the Best of Top Gear, which was due to be screened on 1 October, was postponed indefinitely.
Police and the Health and the Safety Executive are continuing to investigate the crash.
Volgens Top Gear Magazine wel+ daar staan zelfs foto´s in van de komende items, mét Hammondquote:Op vrijdag 27 oktober 2006 17:12 schreef Mr._T-Rex het volgende:

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/(...)-return-january.htmlquote:TV presenter Richard Hammond will resume filming Top Gear in January, just four months after he suffered a severe brain injury in a jet car crash.
The 36-year-old was filming the BBC motoring show when the high speed accident happened last month.
Television producer Andy Wilman says, "We plan to bring Top Gear back in January and the doctor said, 'That's fine - I don't see any problem with that.'
"They want him to rest his brain as much as possible until then and not think about work. If he does that doctors are confident he'll be able to appear on the show."

Hammond will appear on the show with Jarvis Cocker and Lee Evans
Top Gear host Richard Hammond is to give his first TV interview since his near-fatal accident to Jonathan Ross.
The 36-year-old will appear on BBC One's Friday Night With Jonathan Ross on 22 December.
Hammond almost died when the 300mph jet-powered dragster he was driving veered off the track at Elvington airfield, near York, in September.
He was treated for a brain injury at Leeds General Infirmary and has since made a "remarkable" recovery.
Hammond's severe injury had reduced him to a "child-like state" in which he became obsessed with Lego, which he said helped him recover.
He suffered short-term memory loss, became disorientated and also endured "excruciating" pain, for which he was prescribed morphine.
Filming on the new series of Top Gear was suspended after the accident, but has since resumed.
Hammond will be back in the studio in early 2007 when the first episode is broadcast.
