http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/5388296.stm. Er was wat filmmateriaal waarop te zien is dat Richard van de helicopter naar de ambulance loopt. De arts verwacht dat hij nog zo'n zes maanden aan herstel voor de boeg heeft, maar dat er een goede kans is dat 'ie volledig herstelt.

BBC indefinitely postpones Top Gear

LONDON (Reuters) - The BBC is to indefinitely postpone the new series of Top Gear until presenter Richard Hammond has recovered from the brain injuries he suffered in a high-speed crash.

The next series had been due to begin on October 8.

"We would not think of finalising plans for the next series without discussing it with everyone involved," the BBC said in a statement. "When it is suitable, the team will do this and we will announce a new transmission date."


Hammond, 36, was moved from a high dependency ward to a side-room on a general ward at Leeds General Infirmary on Saturday.


"He is continuing to do well," a hospital spokesman told Reuters on Sunday.

Hammond was seriously injured on Wednesday when he crashed a jet-powered dragster as he accelerated towards 300 mph in a feature being filmed for the BBC show.

With the accident being jointly investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Top Gear Producer Andy Wilman threatened to quit if the BBC made any attempt to tone down the programme's emphasis on speed and extreme stunts.

"You either do the show you or you walk away," Wilman told The Observer newspaper on Sunday.

Hammond's co-host Jeremy Clarkson also rejected criticism of Top Gear's format.

"Next week I intend to be down on the track driving faster than ever," Clarkson told The Observer. "It's what we do."

Meanwhile Hammond well-wishers have donated over 134,000 pounds to a charity for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which air-lifted the Top Gear presenter to hospital after Wednesday's crash.

Richard leaves Leeds Hospital
Richard's doctors say that he is making 'very good progress' in his recovery from last Wednesday's jet car crash.

He was today transferred to a Bristol hospital after a short journey across Leeds in the same helicopter that airlifted him from the scene of his accident.

Richard was laughing and smiling with the paramedics as the transfer took place.

Richard's wife Mindy and their daughters Willow and Isabella have been 'overwhelmed' by support from fans and well-wishers.

We alone have received well over 16,000 emails since the accident from Top Gear readers wishing Richard well - and the inbox is still growing.

A website set up by fans has also managed to raise more than £150,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which airlifted Richard to hospital on Wednesday.

The Air Ambulance service has announced that these donations will help to 'bring forward' plans to operate a second helicopter, which may be named after the Hamster.

Mindy has asked that well-wishers make a donation to the Air Ambulance instead of sending flowers.

The accident happened during filming for the new series of Top Gear at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.

Richard was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary's neurological unit.

Jeremy and James have both visited Richard and Mindy in Leeds - and you can read Jeremy's statement here. Like us, their thoughts are with Mindy and the family.

Obviously we expect the crash will be fully investigated by the Health and Safety Executive and the BBC.

The BBC said in a statement: "We are pleased to hear that Richard continues to improve and are staying in close touch with his family.

"The circumstances of this accident will be fully investigated by the BBC, and this process began on Wednesday night.

"We will, of course, be fully co-operating with any investigation by the police and the Health and Safety Executive. Until the BBC's investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate to comment on the details of what happened."

Top Gear star begs BBC to show 280mph car crash

With Top Gear facing the axe, injured presenter Richard Hammond has begged the BBC to show the 280mph car crash that almost killed him.

In a bid to save the motoring show, the 36-year-old is also prepared to appear on television live from his hospital bed as BBC bosses have said they will only screen the new series if Hammond is well enough to appear on it.

Hammond, who suffered a serious brain injury after his jet-powered dragster crashed, is desperate to get in front of a camera as he is worried the programme will be cancelled before he has had a chance to recover from his injuries.

A friend of the presenter, told the Daily Star: "Richard could not stand to feel he was to blame for the demise of the show he loves.

"He's fuming they've postponed the next series because he fears that's the first step towards the BBC pulling the plug permanently. He's terrified they're going to axe it while he's stuck in hospital.

"He'll do anything to keep Top Gear going, even if it means broadcasting from his hospital bed. It would be an emotional broadcast for everyone involved and a ratings winner."

Hammond, affectionately nicknamed the Hamster, has been angered by rumours that Top Gear's future is in doubt as the new series which was due to be aired on October 8 has been postponed indefinitely.

Now out of intensive care at Leeds General Infirmary the presenter has amazed doctors with his fast recovery as only last week his life hanged in the balance.

Reunited with his two daughters Isabella, five, and Willow, two, he is now walking, talking and eating.

Producer Andy Wilman has threatened to quit the show if the BBC try to tone down the show's emphasis on speed and stunts.

While co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson, 46, said: "Swarms of bureaucratic bluebottles are nibbling away at the crash site on York airfield desperately trying to find some reason why Top Gear should be banished from our screens."

SPEED-LOVING Hamster was back on wheels yesterday — on a hospital trolley after a life-saving operation.IIt emerged TV’s Richard Hammond faced death or permanent damage due to a blood clot on the brain. But a hole drilled in his skull eased a dangerous build-up of pressure. Details of the dramatic op were revealed for the first time as Top Gear host Richard, 36, walked smiling off a jet which airlifted him to a hospital near his home.IIt was the latest step of a remarkable recovery after his 300mph jet-powered dragster crash at Elvington airfield, near York. A medical source said last night: “There is no question that the operation saved his life. He is lucky it was caught quickly before any permanent damage could be done.

“He is likely to make a full recovery but he is not out of the woods yet. He is under close observation for any signs of seizure which could be caused by a new bleed. He’s a fighter and has made brilliant progress.”

Richard’s op came hours after he was flown by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary nine days ago. A small patch of hair was shaved from his head before a hand drill — or surgical burr — was used to make a hole in his skull to release the fluid. Medics then managed to cauterise and seal the damaged blood vessel to prevent any further bleeding. Hammond has since made amazing progress and at 1pm yesterday was flown to The Grange BUPA Hospital in Clifton, Bristol — nearer to the home he shares with his wife Mindy and their daughters. He arrived with Mindy and appeared to be in good spirits as he waved to reception staff. The hospital has the only private intensive care ward in South West England.
It has a full range of facilities to help people recover from serious injuries. Richard’s consultant neurosurgeon Stuart Ross predicted the dad of two could be “back to his old self” within six months. Mr Ross said: “He has a significant brain injury. He must rest and allow his brain to recover which takes time.

“I am sure that once that period is over Richard will be back to his old self.”

Sun Doctor Carol Cooper said last night: “When I read that Richard appeared lucid and was talking before he lost consciousness after the crash I suspected a blood clot.

“There’s no question that he would have died if the procedure had not been carried out. It’s a relatively simple operation to carry out but is highly effective and is regarded as a lifesaver.”

Hammond's recovery 'remarkable'

The recovery of Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has been "absolutely remarkable", says the ambulance team which moved him to a Bristol hospital.

Mike Lindley of Yorkshire Air Ambulance estimated Mr Hammond could be nearly back to normal in two or three weeks.

His team had taken the presenter to hospital in Leeds after he crashed his jet-powered car on an airfield.

And he appeared to be in good spirits, smiling and laughing, as the same air ambulance transferred him on Thursday.

The TV star was later seen walking into an ambulance on arrival in Bristol, which is near his home.

'Normal self'

Mr Lindley told the BBC: "His recovery is absolutely remarkable.

"He was sort of talking to the crew, sort of laughing and joking, although he was a bit unstable on his feet."

He added: "Given his sort of progress so far then I would suspect in two or three weeks he'll certainly be, if not all the way back to his normal self then certainly well on his way."

Mr Hammond had been receiving treatment for a brain injury at Leeds General Infirmary but will continue his recovery at the Bupa hospital in Clifton, Bristol.

Neurosurgeon Stuart Ross said rest could help Mr Hammond recover from his "brain injury" within months.

"There comes a period now which is unfortunately slow and is difficult to get through. But there comes a period when he has to get over the injury.

"He has to rest and allow his brain to recover and that takes time. I'm sure that once that period is over he will be back to his old self."

The accident happened while he was filming the BBC show last Wednesday.

Mr Hammond had been driving a jet-powered dragster similar to the Vampire used by Colin Fallows to set the British land speed record of 300.3 mph.

'Ribbing'

The 36-year-old has since received hundreds of cards and flowers from well-wishers.

Mr Hammond said he was so overwhelmed with flowers he was worried he could be "in for some ribbing from fellow Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson and James May".

Donations to the air ambulance which flew him to hospital stand at £148,000.

A BBC spokeswoman confirmed that the final part of the Best Of Top Gear, which was due to be screened on 1 October, had been postponed indefinitely.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are continuing to investigate the crash.
