The Porsche 924 was an automobile produced by Porsche AG of Germany from 1976 to 1988. A two-door, 2+2 seat sports car coupe, the 924 replaced the 914 as the company's entry-level model, and was the model that finally retired the 912. It was the first Porsche model powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine to make production, although the similarly-configured 928 was designed before the 924. The front-engine, rear wheel drive arrangement was normal for most other manufacturers, but it was unusual for Porsche, who had previously only used mid or rear-mounted engines of a boxer configuration, all of which had been air-cooled. The 924 was a success, and not only helped to take Porsche out of financial ruin, but created the revenue stream needed to continue building and developing the 911. The 924 was replaced by the 944, but the two were produced together for some time.

History
The 924 was originally intended to be Volkswagen's flagship sports coupe. Volkswagen commissioned Porsche to design the car, who developed a fresh chassis and transmission that would work with an existing Audi I4 engine. They also handled the suspension and the interior and exterior design. Porsche decided on a rear wheel drive layout, and designed a rear transaxle to help provide 50/50 front/rear weight distribution.

Due to growing concern over the oil crisis, Volkswagen put the project on hold, eventually dumping it entirely after their decision to move forward with the Quattro Coupe model instead. Porsche, who needed a model to replace the 914, made a deal with Volkswagen leadership, agreeing to buy the design for 100 million DM. The deal specified that the car would be built at the ex-NSU factory in Neckarsulm located north of the Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart, the Volkswagen employees would do the actual production line work and that Porsche would own the design. It became one of Porsche's best-selling models to date, and the realitive cheapness of building the car made it both profitable and fairly easy to Porsche to finance.

The original design used an Audi-sourced four-speed manual transmission for the 924 (initally an automatic transmission was not offered) mated to VW's EA831 2.0 L I4 engine, previously used in the Audi 100 and Volkswagen LT van and producing 95 hp (71 kW) in North American trim. European models, which didn't require power-sapping emissions equipment, made 110 hp (82 kW). The original 5-speed transmission was a "dogleg" Porsche unit, which was subsequently replaced with a normal H-pattern five speed, a three speed automatic transmission eventually became available as well. The brakes were solid discs at the front and drums at the rear. The overall styling was penned by Dutchman Harm Lagaay, a member of the Porsche styling team, with the hidden headlights, sloping hoodline and grille-less nose giving the car its popular wedge shape. The car went on sale in the USA in July 1976 as a 1977 model with a base price of $9,395. Porsche made small improvements to the 924 each model year between 1977 and 1985, but nothing major was changed.

J. Pasha, writing in Excellence magazine, at the time, described the 924 as "the best handling Porsche in stock form".


The 1979 Porsche 924 Sebring Edition was produced to celebrate Porsche's success at Sebring. The Sebring was red, with a stripe/graphics kit and was equiped with black painted and polished cookie-cutters rims. It was mainly a cosmetic package.The interior was inlaid with a striking plaid check cloth.

924 Turbo
Porsche executives soon recognised the need for a higher-performance version of the 924 that could bridge the gap between the basic 924 and the 911s. Having already found the benefits of turbochargers on several race cars and the 1975 911 Turbo, Porsche choose to use this technology for the 924, eventually introducing the 924 Turbo as a 1978 model. Porsche started with the same Audi-sourced 2.0 L I4, and engineered a turbocharger for it from the ground up, helping boost output to 170 hp (127 kW). In order to help make the car more functional, as well as to distinguish it from the naturally-aspirated version, Porsche added a NACA duct in the hood and air intakes in the nose, 15-inch spoke-style alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes and a Getrag five-speed, dog leg transmission. Porsche called it 931 (left hand drive) and 932 (right hand drive) internally, much like the Carrera Turbo, which had been "Type 930". Porsche briefly produced a Turbo S model, featuring "S" decals on the hood, an M471 racing suspension setup with Koni shock absorbers and 16-inch wheels.

The turbocharged engine allowed the 924's performance to come surprisingly close to that of the 911 SC, thanks in part to a lighter curb weight, but it also brought reliability problems. Intense heat in the engine bay lead to short turbocharger life and turbo-related seal and seat problems. To fix the problems, Porsche released a revised 924 Turbo series 2 (although badging still read 924 Turbo) in 1981. By using a smaller turbocharger running at increased boost and an improved fuel injection system with DITC ignition triggered by the flywheel, reliability improved and power rose to 177 hp (132 kW).

After a successful sales run of both naturally-aspirated and turbo models, Porsche decided to try the 924 as a race car, and set out to develop a modified version capable of running long endurance races. By adding an intercooler, making mass weight reductions and "tweaking" other key areas, Porsche was able to develop the 924 Turbo into the race car they had wanted, dubbing it 924 Carrera and setting out to race it at the 24 hours of Le Mans. In order to comply with the homologation regulations, the 924 Carrera GT and later 924 Carrera GTS were offered as road cars as well, producing 210 and 245 hp (157 and 183 kW) respectively. The ultimate development of the 924 in its race trim was the 924 Carrera GTR race car, which produced 375 hp (280 kW) from a highly modified version of the 2.0 L I4 used in all 924s except the S. Carrera versions were known by model numbers 937 (left hand drive) and 938 (right hand drive).

Production of the 924 Turbo ceased in 1982 (Italy 1984).


Introduced to the model range in 1979 was the 924 Turbo. Which silenced the critics of the 924's average acceleration. The 924's engine was discovered to be an ideal candidate for turbocharging. The cylinder head was modified to cope with the increased temperatures associated with turbocharging and had a 7.5:1 compression ratio. A KKK turbocharger was fitted along with vented discs from the 911 which were fitted to both the front and rear. A strengthened dogleg 5 speed box was fitted with lower ratio first and second gears. The car still featured a bosch transistorised ignition unit but with more retard on the ignition curve.
Externally there were also many subtle changes, a NACA duct was fitted to the bonnet to aid the cooling of the increased temperatures in the engine bay along with extra vents in the cars badge panel and underneath the front bumper in front of the brakes and where the extra oil cooler was fitted. A spoiler was fitted to the rear tailgate and plastic spats behind the rear wheels. 5 stud 15 inch cross spoke alloys wheels were fitted as standard. The 924 Turbo was a real wolf in sheeps clothing and could accelerate to 60 in just 7.1 seconds and reach 140mph. 170 bhp was available at 5800 rpm


924S
By 1986, 924 sales were dwindling, and Porsche was releasing the 944, its replacement. The 944, however, was more expensive than the outgoing 924 had been, and Porsche wanted a slightly lower priced model to stay in the lineup while the 944 picked up steam. In came the 924S, also introduced in 1986. Featuring the 944's new 2.5 L engine, minor revisions to the interior and suspension, and new rims, the 924S was really a value leader for Porsche. It was, in fact, capable of slightly quicker acceleration than the new 944, thanks to a lighter curb weight, but wasn't as luxurious or fresh. Production of the 924S ceased in 1988, only 4 years before the 944 and 944 Turbo were replaced by the 1992 968.


Porsche 924S Le Mans special edition was built to celebrate Porsche’s 12th outright win in the Le Man 24 Hour. A total of 980 Le Mans models were manufactured between July and September 1987, 200 black and 50 white cars were sold in West Germany, 500 for the US market but all were black, and 113 black and 117 were for the‘Rest of the World’ markets.
Paint finish and interior trim was only offered in two colour combinations - Alpine White with Ochre/Grey detailing or Black with Turquoise detailing. The exterior side stripes were broken by scripted ‘Le Mans’ logos on the lower part of the door, while the rims of the holes in each wheel were in the appropriate Ochre or Turquoise.
The upholstery of the white Le Mans was grey/ochre striped flannel cloth with ochre piping or grey/turquoise with turquoise piping for Black cars. All the cars had the 14 inch steering wheels, with cloth door panels colour-coded to match the cloth inserts on the sports seats which were fitted as standard.
All cars came with a 160 BHP engine plus an electric tilt/removable sunroof fitted as standard.
The Le Man was slightly lower than the standard S by10mm at the front and 15mm at the rear, with stiffer springs and gas-filled shock absorbers all round. It was also given sport anti-roll bars with diameters of 21.5mm at the front but 20mm, rather than 14mm, at the rear.
Wheels were telephone dial cast alloy 6J x 15 at the front and 7J x 15 at the rear.



Carrera GT, GTS and GTR
The Carrera GT was a customer version, internal type number 937, designed in 1981 for Le Mans homologation. Only 406 were ever built, including the prototypes. The engine was rated at 210 bhp, and 245 to 375 bhp for the racing versions, the GTS and GTR. The engines were turbocharged and intercooled, and the body had wider fenders and a big air scoop on the hood for the intercooler. The GTS and GTR engines had front-mount intercoolers and highly modified fuel injection systems.



The ultimate variant of the 924 Carrera was the GTR, Its design originated from the original Le Mans models of 1980. It was an out and out race car, with a power output of 375bhp and a weight of only 945kg. It's heart was still the audi derived 4 pot engine but it was fitted with a kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and dry sump oil system with a huge front mounted intercooler and larger turbo which was mounted on the opposite side of the engine to the standard Carrera GT. Its brakes were the same as those fitted to the 917 to combat the monstrous power output. The car was available in white only and featured even more aggressively flaired wheel arches than the GTS. Front and rear wings (fenders) and bumpers were all in Poly. The aluminium doors and bonnet which were fitted to the GTS were replaced with even lighter grp items. Plexiglass side and rear windows, and a thinner glass front windscreen were fitted. Aluminium roll cage was fitted to strengthen the body/chassis with a cross braced engine bay.7.5 kg auto fire extinguisher, 120 litre fuel tank, coil springs were used at the rear with trailing arms instead of the tortion bar set up. 80% Limited slip differential. BBS Lufterflugel 11x16 alloy wheels.

Around 19 GTR's made and were sold for £39,000 which was quite a sum if you consider the standard 924 of the period sold for £9,000.

0-62 in 4.7 Seconds and a Maximum speed of 181 mph was acheivable.
