Sheva beats Rivera tally

Andriy Shevchenko has overtaken Gianni Rivera to become the second-highest goalscorer in Milan’s history after his two goals last night.

The Ukrainian striker scored two superb strikes in his side’s 5-0 thrashing of Treviso on Wednesday to move on to 165 goals, one more than Rivera ‘The Golden Boy’, who reached his long-standing tally of 164 during almost two decades at the San Siro, in the 1960s and ‘70s.

Since his arrival from Dynamo Kiev in 1999, Shevchenko has made a remarkable impact for the Rossoneri, scoring 122 of his extraordinary haul in Serie A matches.

The formidable centre-forward has been Capocannoniere twice, was voted European Footballer of the Year in 2004 and has won the Scudetto and the Champions League with Milan.

After the match, Sheva reacted to his record-breaking feat with typical modesty.

This has been a difficult period for Milan and the Rossoneri legend said that what most pleased him was his side’s return to form.

“I am very happy with my performance,” said the marksman afterwards. “We have shown that we cannot be written of just yet.

“It’s fantastic to break a club record, especially one set by such a legend, but what counts is that we got back on track.”

Still only 29, the dynamic striker is well on course to beat Gunnar Nordahl’s all-time record. The Swedish international managed a staggering 221 goals for Milan during the 1950s.

Roma may have just set a new club record of eight consecutive League wins but Francesco Totti still isn’t satisfied. “I want 10,” he said.

The Giallorossi captain scored two penalties on Wednesday, in the last 11 minutes, to rescue his side from the jaws of defeat against Cagliari and keep their extraordinary winning sequence going. Now, though, he is hungry for more.

“We were all hoping desperately to beat the club record we set under our old Coach,” said Totti, referring to Fabio Capello’s Roma side.

“Our next target is to reach 10 consecutive wins. We want to enter the history books of Italian football.”

Roma’s 100 per cent record dates back to their 4-0 win over Chievo on December 21 in a run that has seen them hit the net 23 times and concede just five goals.

Last night’s was without doubt the closest match of the lot, played in the eerie atmosphere of an empty Rieti stadium, and Totti had to show great calmness under pressure to score twice from the spot – the last in injury time – against former teammate Antonio Chimenti.

“I chose to go for power because Chimenti knows me well,” he said. “However, despite the strange atmosphere we proved that we are a proper side.”

Roma will be looking to extend their run to nine away to Siena at the weekend. They’ll then face Empoli.

Serse Cosmi krijgt zijn congé bij Udinese

Dat de baan van een trainer niet veilig is als het bestuur het vertrouwen in hem uitspreekt, is wel weer gebleken bij Udinese. Een dag nadat de Italiaanse club bekendmaakte dat coach Serse Cosmi mag aanblijven, werd hij alsnog ontslagen.

Cosmi stond onder druk vanwege de slechte resultaten. Afgelopen zomer nam hij de taken over van Luciano Spalletti die de Bianconeri naar een plaats in de Champions League leidde. Udinese komt dit seizoen na 24 wedstrijden niet verder dan de twaalfde plaats en staat slechts een paar punten voor de op de degradatiezone.

De honneurs worden tot het einde van het seizoen waargenomen door het duo Loris Dominissini (ex-Como) en Nestor Sensini. Laatstgenoemde is momenteel nog speler van Udinese. Verwacht wordt dat de 39-jarige Argentijn zijn spelersloopbaan zal beëindigen om zich op het coachen toe te leggen.

Het bestuur van Udinese maakte woensdag nog duidelijk dat de positie van Cosmi weliswaar ter discussie stond, maar dat het de tijd nog niet rijp achtte voor een ontslag. Een dergelijke rigoureuze maatregel nam de club pas één keer eerder, voegde een woordvoerder er sussend aan toe.

Een dag later viel het doek alsnog voor Cosmi. Na Perugia, Genoa en Udinese kan de coach op zoek naar een nieuwe werkgever.
