Magma ontstaat trouwens pas bij drukverlaging (rift-zones), toevoeging van vluchtige bestanddelen (water, subductiezones) of een opwelling vanuit de buitenkern/binnenmantel (een zgn. 'mantle plume', zie Hawaii). De aardkorst drijft NIET op een zee van vloeibaar magma! De buitenmantel is hooguit plastisch vervormbaar gesteente te noemen. Vulkanische Pluimen ontstaan dieper dan gedacht
Nieuw onderzoek naar de evolutie van vulkanen laat zien wat zich diep onder het oppervlak van de aarde bevindt. Hete pluimen van magma die de bron vormen van vulkanen ontstaan op een diepte van bijna 3.000 km, aan de grens van de kern en de mantel van de aarde. Dat is veel dieper dan wetenschappers dachten dat mogelijk was.
Pluimen zijn hete, nauwe stromingen die omhoog borrelen vanuit de mantel en die verantwoordelijk zijn voor het ontstaan van lange ketens van vulkanen, zoals die van Hawaii. De vraag waar die pluimen precies vandaan komen vormt al vele jaren een discussiepunt. Men hoopte die vraag te beantwoorden met behulp van een nieuwe spectrometer om de isotopische samenstelling te meten van het element thallium in de rotsen van Hawaii.
Dat stelt wetenschappers voor het eerst in staat om via de analyse van de rotsen te achterhalen waar het materiaal precies vandaan komt. De nieuwe thalliumresultaten laten zonder twijfel zien dat de herkomst van het gesteente de grens tussen de kern en de mantel is, duizenden kilometers diep.
Dat betekent dat de mantel van de aarde één enkel convectiesysteem vormt, zoals een soep die continu geroerd wordt, en niet uit verschillende onafhankelijke lagen bestaat. Het laat ook zien dat binnen 1 á 2 miljard jaar afzettingsgesteenten, die aan het oppervlak zijn ontstaan, helemaal weg kunnen zakken naar de kern en vervolgens weer aan het oppervlak komen

Simultaneously, a small explosion-type earthquake shook nearby areas but its intensity was only recognizable by seismographs around the volcano.
Solidum said they expect similar ash explosions in the coming days with magma entering the summit area and releasing volcanic gases.
Before the ash explosion, the PHIVOLCS also recorded 147 low frequency volcanic earthquakes starting at 3:45 p.m. on February 20 until 5:20 a.m. yesterday.
Solidum said the recurrence of earthquakes was unusual as the normal earthquake ranges from zero to five tremors.
"These low frequency volcanic earthquakes were relatively large in amplitude compared with previous seismicity and are interpreted to be caused by the shallow movement of magma within the summit crater," he said.
The PHIVOLCS maintains the alert level-2 status at Mayon Volcano reminding the public to stay away from the six-kilometer permanent danger zone and to avoid major river channels that come from the volcano.

"I DON'T think visitors appreciate that they're standing directly on top of the largest, most dynamic magmatic system on the planet," says geologist Daniel Dzurisin. While the supervolcano that is Yellowstone National Park won't be erupting any time soon, he and his colleagues have uncovered a surprising source of volcanic activity beneath tourists' feet, which was probably the reason trails had to be closed in 2003.
The Yellowstone caldera formed 640,000 years ago in an explosion of magma more than 1000 times greater than the Mount St Helens eruption in 1980. While it is common knowledge that the caldera floor rises and falls, the source of the motion remains uncertain. According to a previous popular theory, the accumulation and release of fluid not far beneath the surface is driving the cycles, but Dzurisin, of the David A. Johnston Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington, and his colleagues say a deeper source best explains their latest findings.
The team, led by Charles Wicks of the US Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, used a series of satellite measurements to determine the fluctuations in elevation - up to 120 millimetres - over a seven-year period.
Although the floor of the caldera began subsiding in 1997, the researchers uncovered a new region of activity beneath the north rim of the caldera that continued to swell from 1995 until 2002. Models incorporating the measurements indicate that the source of the upward push was 10 to 16 kilometres beneath the surface in the basaltic magma layer, well below the level of the fluid suggested as the source of the motion (Nature, vol 440, p 72).
The picture is one of magma flow driving the undulation of the surface, flowing upward from beneath the caldera floor towards the northern rim and then down and out from beneath the rim. Seismic activity near the exit acts as a valve, suggests Wicks, blocking or releasing the magma outflow. This explains why the rim and floor can swell and sink at different times.
The idea also explains the rise in thermal activity in the rim area in 2003, Wicks says, when some trails had to be closed because of increased steam releases and a rise in surface temperatures. The swelling magma could have cracked the crust, creating new avenues for steam to escape to the surface, he says.

It is part of a range of four volcanoes that has been active since November 1999.

Jakarta - Scientists are closely monitoring a volcano on Indonesia's densely-populated island of Java after registering increased activity over the weekend, officials said Monday. Vulcanologists have already warned people living in the shadow of the 2,911-meter (9,606-foot) Mount Merapi to prepare for a possible evacuation in the event of an eruption.
The volcano registered more than 30 tremors on Sunday and more than 200 in the past week, Subandriyo, from the Vulcanology Centre in Central Java, told AFP.

Jakarta - Government authorities in Indonesia's densely-populated Central Java have banned mountain climbers from Merapi volcano as the province's crater has heated up, officials said Tuesday.
'As of Monday, we have issued the ban for climbers until further notice,' said Heru, an official at nearby Merapi's monitoring centre, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
'A similar ban was also applied to sand digging activities around Merapi's slopes. At a radius of seven kilometres from Merapi's crater, sand digging activity has to be halted,' said Heru, who like many Indonesians uses only by one name.
The 3,371-metre-high volcano, about 425-kilometres southeast of Jakarta, has increased in activity since mid-March, and scientists have since closely monitored its activity.
Heru said volcanic tremors had risen in frequency to nearly 100 on Sunday, while hot lava was seen sliding down into the area of Pasar Bubar village, about 350-metres from the Merapi's crater.
'We feared that the falling lava could hit the climbers. Therefore, Merapi has now been closed to climbers,' Heru said, adding that vulcanologists have upgraded the volcano's alert stage one level below ordering an evacuation and two below a full eruption.
Despite the significant increase in volcanic activity in recent days, experts have said it was 'very difficult' to determine when a big eruption from Merapi will take place.
Merapi, which has been rumbling intermittently over the past four years, looms above a plan located in the southern area of central Java, just north of the cultural city of Yogyakarta.
Merapi's most deadly eruption took place in 1930, when 1,370 people were killed. It also erupted in 1994, claiming the lives of at least 66 people.
Indonesia has the world's highest density of volcanoes with 500 located in a so-called 'Ring of Fire,' along the 5,000-kilometres wide archipelago nation. Of these, 128 are active and 65 listed as dangerous.

UBINAS, Peru (Reuters) -- A volcano in southern Peru threw plumes of smoke high into the sky on Thursday, prompting authorities to declare an "orange alert" to encourage villagers to evacuate the area.
Most farming families who live on the slopes of the Ubinas volcano had resisted calls to leave their homes since it rumbled back to life about two weeks ago, even though many have reported breathing problems and poisoned livestock.
"Ashes fell all over the place ... in my home, even in my bed. Now my throat, my head and my eyes hurt," resident Benita Mamani said of the volcano's more violent activity earlier this week.
Ubinas, located in the Moquegua region some 900 km (550 miles) south of Lima, has been belching smoke and ashes sporadically for most of the month after nearly four decades of inactivity. Small tremors have also been felt in nearby towns.
An explosion earlier on Thursday sent gases high into the sky, forming a gigantic mushroom-shaped cloud the stretched more than half a mile (1 km) above the earth.
"The cows and the lambs don't want to eat," said Lucia Condori, 47, who lives in the village of Querapi, some 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) south of the volcano. Most residents of the Andean region are poor and live off the land.
Livestock have been poisoned by eating grass coated with volcanic ash and 20 llamas have died.
Emergency officials met on Thursday to consider whether to force the evacuation of the village's 160 or so people, who do not want to move unless they can take their livestock.
"They've told us we've got to learn to live with the volcano and the ash, but we'd never seen anything like this," said peasant farmer Adon Castro. "We're terrified."
