Dat was ik na een tijdje al snel zat en het zijn dus ook niet de artiesten waar ik vandaag de dag nog naar luister. Voornamelijk dankzij deze topicreeks onwijs veel nieuwe dingen ontdekt en gek genoeg gaat mijn voorkeur nu uit naar eind jaren '80, begin '90

Two days after my first listening session with Grammy winner Kanye West, the singer is putting the finishing touches on his new album - and his fingernails.

Ensconced inside a suite at the W Hotel in Los Angeles, West is seated in a lounge chair with his feet soaking while his fingernails are filed. "I hope you don't mind," he says, often nodding off throughout our conversation. "Sorry, I haven't had much sleep lately. I'm just putting the finishing touches on the album."

The album Late Registration is already creating a buzz among hip-hop fans, keen to hear more work from the Grammy winner. For the record, West won three Grammys last year (he was nominated for 10) including best rap album. And he has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide of The College Dropout to an audience as broad as anyone's in hip-hop.

It's hard to believe that this was the same person who, when asked about role models in the industry, replied: "How could you be me and want to be someone else? I mean, what else can you achieve? I am so across the board. I've achieved all my goals.

"What am I going to do now? Get another Grammy? I really don't want to win another Grammy 'cause I don't want to have to say anything else. I mean, I've already got to the point where I'm, like, what am I going to say now? All you can say is thanks."

And he seems pretty confident music fans have no need to buy any other music.

"What are you gonna buy if I don't come up with an album?" asks West. "I mean, there is nothing else out there that comes close to this. Nothing that is of the same calibre." He was talking two days earlier, midway through listening to album work in Los Angeles.

The funny side of all this is that West is serious. Scattered throughout the studio are some of West's "dudes" decked out in chains, baggy jeans and fitted T-shirts. In the corner his cousin is wearing a Gucci cape while he gets his locks trimmed.

West is confident, cocky and in control. He pulls a disc out of his Louis Vuitton case and loads it into a laptop. The club-shattering beats begin to blare out of the speakers, and in among them soulful sounds from Ray Charles are heard.

"Jamie Foxx has been my dog since we did Slow Jamz," says West as Foxx appears on the computer screen. "I saw him a few years ago singing on the out-takes of a DVD and I was like 'yo, he's incredible, I want to work with him'. So I did."

Foxx is just one of the many that collaborates with West on Late Registration. The first single, Diamonds From Sierra Leone, features Shirley Bassey's Diamonds Are Forever as well as a vocal riff from OutKast. Brandy sings the chorus on a track titled Bring Me Down, and on Heard Em Say. Maroon 5's Adam Levine lends his trademark tones to West's work.

"He was just so good that I had to put him on the album," West explains of Levine's involvement.

"Adam has this amazing voice, like a bird or a flute - it was just a perfect fit."

West says he is constantly testing out his tracks with everyone from "the janitor to Jay Z".

"When I first made this song the dudes liked it, but the girls didn't. Once I added Adam, everyone thought it sounded cool."

Not one to take all the credit, West says God is the executive producer of his album. The singer also feels it's his responsibility to make music that touches "his people".

"I'll never forget about the 'hood. If black people don't like a song, then it doesn't go on the album."

Born in Chicago, West started working on tracks in his bedroom when he was 12. He sold his first beat to Jermaine Dupri at 20 and would approach the stars he was producing, such as Jay Z, Alicia Keys and Britney Spears.

He'd rap in their faces, hoping for a break, and it happened.

There's no doubt his style is fresh and unique, with West's hip-hop blended with a range of sound effects and other musical styles.

West says Late Registration is the second in a four-part series of albums, following on from his very successful debut. The next album will be called Graduation Day, and the last one is entitled Good Ass Job. West says that by the time the fourth album is done he would have achieved what he set out to do in the world of music, and now has his sights set on the big screen. Graduation Day is set to be released Fall 2006 and Good Ass Job will be released Late 2007.

"I don't just want to be in movies, I also want to write and produce and direct them," he explains. "I mean, I've already done so many videos - it's a natural progression."

And of course, he is confident that it will happen. "When you see me on the red carpet in a few years, remind me of our conversation and I'll say 'I told you so'. I know it will happen."
