So this set. didn't sound as present to me as they can in more intimate venues, but you have to respect a band that plays an atonal (and rhythmically impossible) eight-minunte be-all/end-all instrumental jam like "The Last Trumpeter Swan" and keeps 12,000 people enrapt. Someone (I won't say who) said, "Damn, I forgot how good these guys were"; even 's oldest material, like "Halfrabbit Halfdog", which made a welcome appearance in the set, still sounds newer than 99% of what people lose sleep over these days.
As for other simultaneities, closer "Come See the Duck" is a one-minute man, which means might win for Intonation act with both the shortest and longest songs in a set. The band also played the first two songs off their new album ("Chatterboxes", "Twin Killers"), which went over well. The songs pop off but demand unpacking; hopefully, The Runners Four will get more people on board with the band's high modern comp and sugar pop sensibilities-- or at least get more out to see Satomi's jaw-dropping horizontal hokey-pokey.
