As well as affecting the migration trajectories of birds and other animals, the disruption to the Earth's magnetic field could expose the Earth to hazardous cosmic rays -- a scenario that some researchers have linked to mass extinction events like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs around 65 million years ago. Geoscientists believe that our planet's internal magnetic dynamo is responsible for pole reversals, but the actual mechanism is not well understood.
Previous analyses assumed that the number of times the poles have reversed over last 160 million years follows a Poisson distribution, implying that the events are random. The Poisson distribution tells you the probability of a number of events occurring in a fixed time if the events are independent and the average rate is known. A good example of the Poisson distribution in physics is the likelihood of unstable radioactive nuclei decaying in a certain period.
Now, a team of physicists led by Vincenzo Carbone of the University of Calabria have discovered that the sequence of polarity reversals can be well described by a Lévy distribution instead. In contrast to Poisson statistics, the Lévy distribution describes stochastic processes that are characterised by the presence of "memory" effects -- or long-range correlations between the events in time. Lévy distributions are widely used to study many critical phenomena, such as earthquakes, and also when analysing financial data. The researchers obtained their results by careful statistical analysis of different sets of paleomagnetic data containing estimates of when the Earth's poles reversed.
"The result means that polarity reversals are not random events that are independent of each other," explains team member Fabio Lepreti. "Instead, there is some degree of memory in the magnetic dynamo processes giving rise to the reversals," he says. "We hope that our work will serve as a useful reference point for models that aim to describe the phenomenon of pole reversal." Even uit het hoofd, als ik me niet vergis zijn er al ruim 200 tornado's geweest dit seizoen en eigenlijk is het seizoen nog niet begonnen.
Ik dacht dat een gemiddeld seizoen in de VS zo'n 500 tornado's kent.
Als het aan dit tempo verder gaat, worden records gebroken.

In a draft paper circulated to colleagues, Hansen argued that ocean conditions now, including a significant warming off the coast of Peru, are similar to those that preceded the extreme El Nino in the winter of 1997-1998.
In the U.S., California felt the brunt of El Nino's wrath, suffering massive flooding. New Mexico received above-average precipitation.
Hansen, head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City, blames global warming for increasing the chance of an extreme El Nino.
Scientists questioned Hansen's global warming link, noting researchers' predictions on the subject vary widely. Most scientists expressed caution about Hansen's ideas.
University of Colorado science policy researcher Roger Pielke Jr. made Hansen's paper public on his blog Thursday.
"The graveyard is filled with missed El Nino forecasts," said Mickey Glantz of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo.
But other scientists said Hansen is on point.
"I strongly believe that most of what Jim Hansen writes about El Nino there is correct," said Mark Cane of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York.

De inwoners van San Francisco zijn slecht voorbereid op de „Big One”, een nieuwe, rampzalige aardbeving zoals honderd jaar geleden in 1906, toen circa 3.000 mensen om het leven kwamen. Dat stelt het Amerikaanse Rode Kruis in een onderzoek, dat donderdag is gepubliceerd in de aanloop naar de herdenking van de ramp volgende week.
Slechts 6 procent van de inwoners van het risicogebied heeft voor zichzelf een plan gemaakt voor het geval van een ramp en spullen klaarstaan in een 'overlevingssetje'.
Bij de Sint-Andreasbreuk die dwars door Californië loopt, kan het volgens seismisch experts elk moment tot een ontlading van spanningen komen, met een zeer zware aardbeving als gevolg. De schade zou nu in het dichtbevolkte gebied veel groter zijn dan in 1906.

De Californische stad San Francisco herdenkt dinsdag dat honderd jaar geleden een verwoestende beving de stad verwoestte en een daaropvolgende brand duizenden huizen in de as legde. De plechtigheden vallen samen met een onderzoek dat berekent dat een vergelijkbare beving drieduizend doden zou kunnen eisen en meer dan 150 miljard dollar zou kosten.
Nog voor het ochtendgloren, om 05.12 uur (14.12 uur onze tijd) wordt tijdens een ceremonie een minuut stilte gehouden. Precies op dat tijdstip in 1906 schudde de bodem onder de stad, waardoor ten minste vierduizend mensen omkwamen.
Later op de dag worden nog duizenden bezoekers meer verwacht bij het oudste monument voor de slachtoffers van de trillingen. Hotels, bars en restaurants herdenken de natuurramp op een luchtigere manier. Zij serveren speciale maaltijden en organiseren themafeesten.
Wetenschappers meldden maandag dat het gebied rond de baai van San Francisco de komende 25 jaar een kans van een op 25 heeft op een nieuwe zware beving. Daardoor zouden tussen de 1.800 en 3.400 personen kunnen omkomen en meer dan 90.000 panden beschadigd kunnen raken. De meeste doden zouden kunnen vallen door ineenstortende gebouwen van voor 1970. In dat jaar werden veel strengere bouwvoorschriften van kracht.

Another magnitude 7.9 earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area would probably produce much stronger shaking than the catastrophic 1906 event of the same size.
