When Dee wanted to build a monster MR2 he took his time and sourced the perfect motor to start with from Japan. It looked shit, it had holes in the dashboard and none of the wheels matched but as we all know that doesn’t matter when you’re going to rip a car to bits and start afresh with your own vision driving you…

It was the summer of 2003 when Dee spotted this Toyota MR2 Turbo appearing for auction in Japan. It was tatty, shitty, and crappy but the engine was in good condition and the chassis and structure were sound. Since it looked awful it ended up going for a song and when Dee got the car into the UK he stored it in the workshop in preparation for tinkering. Dee’s business is fast cars, whether it be importing and selling or servicing and tuning, day in day out his life revolves around the best that Japan’s motor industry can produce. With this being the case he couldn’t devote large chunks of time to getting the MR2 in a road worthy condition as bills need to be paid and the rest of the business had to take priority.

When time was available Dee and the team at CRD would tinker in the engine bay and using an array of parts they built the basis for an awesomely powerfully rear wheel drive road car. The revision 3 3S-GTE power plants are amazingly rugged and even though it’s only a 2 litre engine there are cars running over 800bhp in Japan and the USA with unmodified blocks. The CRD crew stripped the engine down completely and replaced everything. HKS were chosen for forged pistons, the head gasket; exhaust manifold, big ass turbo with external Wastegate, cams and pullies. The inlet charge cooling was taken care of by a custom intercooler setup located under the boot floor and connected by stainless pipe work through the boot floor and then into the engine bay via the bulkhead. It’s an idea that’s becoming more popular with MR2’s as the stock intercooler is tiny, mounted in a daft location and is completely shit to be honest. Running the bigger turbo means a larger volume of air to cool and the new setup works very well. Of course the factory ECU wouldn’t know where to begin with such a setup and to take care of the smooth running an A’PEXi PowerFC takes over duties to make sure the fuelling, timing and boost are all kept in check. Naturally keeping the 2835’s output matched with petrol would be out with the scope of the Toyota injectors and fuel pump so a Bosch unit has been fitted which feeds a set of 600cc injectors.

Obviously making a car shift is great fun but Dee knows only too well that when you make something go quicker you need to make it slow quicker and the brakes and suspension have been replaced to help. Cusco coil overs pin the car to the tarmac and EBC discs and pads make sure that the car halts as soon as the middle pedal is feathered. Having 400 ponies tearing the lining from the clutch meant the Toyota OE unit was soon binned in favour of a highly uprated OS Giken twin plate version. Sure it’s a bit grabby for town driving but its one of those sacrifices you have to make when you want the power available under your right foot. While they were at it the original limited slip diff was binned and a higher rated Cusco one was fitted to handle the extra power.

To aid the driver there is a whole bank of gauges setup in the cabin to keep things in check. We’ve got boost pressure, exhaust gas temperature, oil pressure and of course the obligatory turbo timer. The seats, door cards and gear gaiter have been treated to a retrim in black and leather which looks awesome and matches the exterior perfectly. Of course the biggest change to the car is the ultra wide body work with extended wings, arches and bumpers increasing the span of the car by a good 20cm on each side. It looks as if the car could be on its way to the LeMans 24 hour challenge the way it sits menacingly on the road. The kit is based on a Japanese 8 piece mould but CRD in association with A & E Forrest and C.A.R.S. have blended the side skirts, wings and rear quarters together in a seamless one piece fibreglass cast adding a few unique touches along the way. This makes for a car that looks like it was designed that way instead of having box sections added on at a later stage. The door mouldings have also been removed, filled and smoothed in. Clear Lexus style clusters live on the rear but look completely dwarfed by the humungous rear arches and back bumper. It might not look like it but the wheels hiding under the arches are in fact 19”s! It was impossible to fit them to the car without the Cusco coil overs and even with spaces and low profile tyres it’s a tight fit between those arches and the rubber.

The only thing this car doesn’t have is big sounds but as Dee puts it “that would only slow me down anyway”. Who needs audio when you have a blower sucking air in at a phenomanl rate right behind your head! The engine bay is littered with all kinds of shiny pipework, tanks and polished bits. The rocker cover, catch tank, inlet piping, intercooler piping and lid cover are all produced in polished stainless steel which not only looks great but functions perfectly.
Dee isn’t know for his show cars but this motor is definitely one for the road as it’s designed to look stunning but be driveable on the public highways, a bit of a break from the usual 1000bhp+ drag strip demons he usually pilots. With our visit nearing completition Dee tries to talk me into following his lead with my own car, and you know what, I might just nick a few of his ideas!
Do you ken you’ve got a tax disc holder
stuck to your arse?”

Light thinks it travels faster than anything, but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels it finds the darkness has always got there first and is waiting for it.
