Buiten het feit dat Liverpool een bizar aantal blessures heeft gehad dit seizoen, zit Benitez met de ellende van de 'Houllier jaren' opgezadeld. Verder hetzelfde probleem als Jol bij de sperz: nog teveel spelers met langdurige contracten die niet in de visie van de trainer passen.
Het voetbal van Liverpool is (niet altijd) iig leuker om naar te kijken dan afgelopen jaren en men haalde wel de CL finale.

Arsenal have finished top of the Barclays Premiership Fair Play League for a second successive season.

Arsenal heeft de titel verkwanseld in de post-manyoo periode daarin speelde we 4 maal gelijk en verloren we 1 maal.
Dat maakte het verschil.

Vanaf Januari is Arsenal gelijkwaardig aan Chelsea gebleken.

Als Arsenal 1 of 2 goede versterkingen haalt zie ik Arsenal komend jaar kampioen worden.

Chelsea and Cole prepare to be hit in the pocket

CHELSEA and Ashley Cole are today expected to be hit with fines totalling up to £250,000 by the FA Premier League over the alleged “tapping-up” of the Arsenal defender. It is believed that the Barclays Premiership champions will be found guilty but that they will escape a points deduction or sanctions on their transfer dealings next season.
José Mourinho, the Chelsea manager, is also likely to be fined when the independent three-man commission chaired by Sir Philip Otton, QC, a former High Court judge, makes known its ruling at the offices of the Premier League in Central London after a two-day hearing last month.



Cole will not be present because he is on tour with England in the United States and Mourinho is on holiday. Chelsea will be represented by Bruce Buck, the chairman, who is thought likely to appeal against any six-figure fine.

It took a formal complaint from Arsenal to prompt the Premier League’s investigation into allegations that Mourinho and Peter Kenyon, the Chelsea chief executive, “tapped-up” Cole at the Royal Park Hotel in Lancaster Gate, London, on January 27.

Chelsea have since dropped their interest in the left back and have vehemently defended themselves against the allegation, but should Arsenal believe any punishments to be unduly lenient, they are considering taking the matter to Fifa, the sport’s world governing body, which could stop Chelsea from buying and selling players for a period of time.

Although the independent panel has the power to deduct points from Chelsea, in the only two previous such cases brought to the Premier League, Liverpool were fined £20,000 for making an illegal approach for Christian Ziege while the defender was at Middlesbrough and, more recently, Aston Villa were warned and ordered to pay costs for making an illegal approach for James Beattie, then a Southampton striker.

Chelsea’s fine is expected to be at least five times that imposed on Liverpool, but even that may appear more like a slap on the wrist for Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s billionaire owner.

The saga is unlikely to end today because Cole remains unhappy after alleging that Arsenal reneged on an offer to pay him £60,000 a week — more than twice the £27,000 that he earns under his present contract, which has two years to run. His agent, Jonathan Barnett, has fallen out with the club and there has been no fresh offer, prompting Cole’s fears that Arsenal are willing to sell him to fund a spending spree in the summer.

One part of Cole’s defence has been to challenge rule K5, under which he was charged, which prevents contracted players or their representatives from making approaches to other clubs. “The rules around Premiership players’ contracts are out of step with the rest of the business world and, one could argue, are anti-competitive,” Marjorie Holmes, a partner at Davies Arnold Cooper, a legal firm based in London, said.

“Employers in many industries train and invest in their employees and can be very frustrated when they are approached by headhunters who entice them to join rival or competing companies. But it’s viewed as normal business. The Premier League appears to want to protect itself from what most people would consider healthy competition.”

A guilty verdict may also give the FA the green light to take action against Barnett, who could not be charged by the Premier League as he does not come under its jurisdiction. The FA’s compliance unit has been passed papers from the case. Barnett could have his licence revoked.


VERDICT LIKELY TO WORK OUT FINE

IF FOUND guilty, Chelsea, José Mourinho and Ashley Cole face a variety of sanctions that could be as severe as a points deduction for the club and suspension for the manager and player, or as painless as a reprimand. The likely scenario is that the FA Premier League will inflict penalties large enough to allow it to claim record fines but keep the sums low enough to discourage any appeals.

THE practice of “tapping-up” will continue, but perhaps not with the same brazenness that led Chelsea and Ashley Cole to that fateful meeting in London’s Royal Park Hotel on January 27. No one expects clubs and managers to start following the rule book to the letter, but the message sent out by the FA Premier League’s disciplinary commission yesterday in meting out record financial punishments for the offence was that miscreants had better not get caught.
The panel will take it as a compliment that the various guilty parties spoke of their shock and fury, as well as their intentions to appeal against the sanctions. Chelsea, who had expected only a warning, were stunned by the threat of a three-point deduction and Bruce Buck, the normally mild-mannered chairman, responded with a fierce attack on Arsenal for turning the case into “a public spectacle”. Rivals on the field, the London clubs are now sworn enemies in the boardroom.



“Tapping-up” normally takes place on the telephone, but the revelation of the timing, venue and the choice of biscuits at the infamous meeting — and the subsequent complaint from Arsenal — made “Colegate” an exceptional case. As Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, said: “It is an arrogance where you think you are above everything and can do anything you want. They should have held the meeting in the middle of the M25.”

The commission’s scathing verdicts backed up Wenger’s accusations of arrogance and demolished Chelsea’s argument that they should be treated leniently because Cole and his representatives had done the approaching rather than the other way round. As well as fining Chelsea £300,000 and imposing a points deduction, suspended for 12 months, the three-man panel described the decision by Peter Kenyon, the chief executive, and José Mourinho, the manager, to attend the meeting with Cole as “rash and dangerous”.

Mourinho, who was fined £200,000, was described as acting with “blatant disregard” for the rules and playing a “pivotal role in the discussions”. After his touchline ban from Uefa, the Portuguese will believe that he has been persecuted once more. Buck insisted that the club would not pay the manager’s fine, although that claim will be met with scepticism.

Cole, who was fined £100,000, was treated most leniently by the commission, which accepted that he had been “manipulated to a large extent by his agent (Jonathan Barnett)”. Nevertheless, Graham Shear, Cole’s lawyer, gave warning that he could take the case to the law courts. “We are absolutely furious,” he said. Shear said that the appeal would be based in part on a claim of restraint of trade, but Sir Philip Otton, QC, the chairman of the panel, found that the high rewards for players balanced out the restrictions.

Still unclear is Cole’s future, with David Dein, the Arsenal vice-chairman, insisting last night that the defender could still have a role to play at Highbury. “With the benefit of hindsight everyone makes mistakes, but he has been punished and we move on,” Dein said. “We didn’t want to see him punished.” However, relations between Arsenal and Barnett, whose role in setting up the meeting will now be investigated by the Football Association, are so bad that it is impossible to see the defender signing a new deal at Highbury unless he changes agent. Cole could decide to see out the remaining two years on his contract.

One certainty is that relations between the clubs are at an all-time low, certainly at board level. Dein, who had pushed for Chelsea to be punished with a transfer embargo, was disappointed that the Barclays Premiership champions were not forced to pay them compensation. “The rules are in the rule book for a good reason,” he said. “To be respected.”

“In this case, the player’s club decided not to talk to him, not to try to resolve any issues, but made it into a public spectacle which I think was inappropriate, not in the best interests of that club, not in the best interests of that player and not in the interests of football.” Arsenal and Chelsea are due to meet in the Community Shield on August 7. There could be two-footed tackles in the directors’ box.
