Het enfant terrible Eric Cantona:





One of the most flamboyant players ever to play the game, Eric Cantona's antics off the field often seem to outshine his brilliance on the field. Eric's career started with the small French side Auxerre, and from there he moved on to first division team Marseille for a fee of 2.3 million.

It was during his stay at Marseille that Eric's temper began to surface. Having been substituted in a friendly against Torpedo Moscow, Eric ripped off his jersey and threw it to the ground in disgust. Marseille imposed a short ban for his actions. Around the same time, Eric found himself banned form the French Nationals for insulting the coach on French TV. It wasn't until Michel Platini took over that Eric was asked to play once again for Les Bleus.

Not long after all this, Eric was loaned to Bordeaux, but he moved on to Montpeiller, where he had one of his best seasons, helping the club win the French Cup. The following year he returned to Marseille, however injuries kept him sidelined, and once again he found himself at another club, this time Nimes. Troubles followed him, and while at Nimes Eric found himself called before the French Football Association for throwing a ball at a referee during a match. When the French FA handed him a one month ban for his actions, Eric called them all idiots and the FA raised the ban to 2 months. This didn't sit well with the spirited Cantona, and he decided in retaliation to retire early from the game that he loved.

Retirement didn't last long as Eric was convinced to come out of retirement and move to England. Refusing a tryout with Sheffield Wednesday, he joined Leeds, and in his second year with the team helped them win the league title. Ironically, Eric found it hard to remain in the first team with Leeds and soon found himself offloaded to Manchester United where his legend continued to grow. He helped lead Man United to championship after championship. It was with Man United that he made his biggest mistake - the legendary "Kung Fu" kick. In a 1995 game against Crystal Palace, Eric ran into the stands and kicked a fan for shouting racial slurs at him. He was dealt a heavy fine and sentenced to serve 120 hours of community service plus a 9-month ban from the game. Eventually Eric rejoined Man United and helped them win several more championships, but his retirement in 96-97 surprised everyone. Many people felt he could have played many more years.

He then embarked on an acting career, starring in movies such as Elizabeth. He is currently playing/managing the French National Beach Soccer team.

En dan de Dennis Bergkamp sinds hij bij Arsenal speelt. En natuurlijk zijn goal tijdens WC '98 vs Argentinie. Was er live getuige van in Marseille en ik ben zelden zo blij geweest. '97/'98 was ook zijn beste seizoen uit zijn carriere met een briljante 1e seizoenshelft bij Arsenal. Het is nu allemaal wat minder, maar ik kan nog steeds genieten van zijn actie's en zijn inzicht.

Ik ben altijd al gecharmeerd geweest van de eigenlijk wat minder talentvolle speler die er toch op wilskracht een carrierre uihaalt. Meestal zijn dat verdedigers, broodvoetballers die lekker 90 minuten vol bikkellen en dan met t vrouwtje naar huis. Gemiddeld 2 doelpunten in 350 wedstrijden.

Dan komt daar vriend Jerrel en via drie omwegen haalt ie het meer dan maximale uit z'n carriere en ook nog eens als spits; scoort aan de lopende band, en is ook nog eens zeer beperkt als voetballer. En hij is nog lelijk ook, geweldig !

Zou die nog naar Ajax komen....

Harry Decheiver.

Hij speelde altijd zo makkelijk en scoorde de mooiste goals, waar hij ook speelde. Verder vertegenwoordigde hij Deventer en Go Ahead Eagles op een manier die heel goed bij de club past. Een speler die alles op basis van techniek deed, want inzet had hij totaal niet. Daarom heeft hij ook nooit Oranje gehaald of in zijn 'prime' bij een topclub gespeeld.

Mensen, wat een fenomeen was dat voor mij.

Het weinige Engelse voetbal dat ik toen op tv zag (Belgie) was al voldoende om gecharmeerd te raken van deze geweldige voetballer.
Toen steevast gekoppeld aan Ian Wright.

Alleen al door Bergkamp was ik toen al een jeugdige Gooner.
Tijdschriften van Arsenal kocht ik ook, wel duur overigens voor een tiener, de double van 98, daar hadden ze een jaarboek van gemaakt. En het eerst wat ik ging lezen was het profiel van Bergkamp en een gedeelte dat over Bergkamp en Overmars ging over oranje.

Dat hij in Frankrijk zo'n mooi wk speelde versterkte het gevoel nog meer.
En samen met mijn vader bijgelegd en naar de ladbrokes (bookie) om te voorspellen dat Bergkamp topscorer zou worden.
Yup, mijn geloof in hem was diep.

Ach, dat hij van Ajax kwam doet er niet toe bij mij.
Ben gewoon fan van hem, zoals er ook ajacieden zijn die fan van Romario zijn.
Ik ben blij dat ik Bergkamp heb mogen meemaken, zoals Golfer Cruijff meemaakte.

Soccer, is it really that attractive? Not sure......But there's no doubt that soccer games will be very interesting with Roberto Baggio. Then we should thank Fiorindo and Matilde, thank them for giving the wonderful soccer world a legend, an unforgettable one.

On the 18th of February, 1967, this legend started in Caldogno, a small town in the north of Vicenza in Italy. In the Baggio family, which had had 5 children -- Gianna, Walter, Carla, Giorgio and Anne Maria; our soccer hero was born -- Roberto! As a person who loved soccer, he always thought of football, and didn't want to live without it. Roby's career began in the place where he had been there for 9 years. Just after a few matches, Roberto had become a little star, always scored. At the end of a game in which he had 6 goals, a scout Antonio Mora persuaded him to join Vicenza, a Serie C team at that time.

However, under the coach Cad, Baggio didn't have much chance to play, and his first season just went pass. But a good news was that a new man arrived in the next season, Baggio therefore had more chances to play, he then gave his first career goal to Bruno Giorgi as a present, thanked the coach for putting him in a such important place. Furthermore, his good performance in this season brought him an under 16 national team place.

The 84-85 season, Baggio was on track, he got 12 goals in 29 league games, this helped Vicenza to climb to Serie B. But on the 3rd of May, Roberto went pass Serie B, joined a Serie A team, Fiorentina.

Baggio finished his first season in Fiorentina quietly. But in the next season, he finally took part in a Serie A game on the 21st of September, 1986, against Sampdoria. However, he hurt his knee in this season! Oh God! This is unfair, Baggio had just got a chance to show his talent, and now......wait a minute, he scored his first Serie A goal in the game vs Napoli on the 10th of May, 1987, not bad then! At least had a goal!

Good things continued to come, in the next season, he totally recovered, and had 9 goals. On the other hand, he was called by national team for the first time in November, 1988, to play in Rome against Holland. Moreover, everyone will get married one day, and no exception for a soccer player, Roby stopped his long run with girl friend Andreina, formally became a couple after the end of this season.

The following season, Baggio finished beautifully with 17 goals in 32 league matches. He also took the team to the final of UEFA Cup, but unfortunately they were beaten by a Torine team, Juventus, couldn't bring the cup back to Florence. The UEFA Cup winner Juventus, however, signed Baggio with a world record transfer fee -- US$17 million, it was about 7.5 million pounds. But this announcement made Fiorentina fans angry, caused riots in the streets.

Anyway, Baggio's great form gave him a place in Azeglio Vicini's Italian national team in World Cup '90. However, as he was not brought up by Vicini from junior team, in Italy's 1-0 winning first and second match, there was no Baggio. But these poor results forced the coach to change. In the last match in the first round, Baggio and Schillaci partnered in front aimed at beating Czechoslovakia. They successfully combined together! And Roby scored the best goal in this tournament.

After that, Italy went into the semi-final against Argentina. Before the match started, Vicini told Baggio that he was to be in the bench when the game began, the reason was he looked tired, but Roberto rebutted "I am 23! I will have eaten grass to play." No effect, he only played in the second half. 120 minutes over, the result was still leveled, penalty! Baggio luckily scored 1. But the game belonged to Argentine goalkeeper, who kicked Italy out......the host only got a third place.

Forgot about the sad memory in the World Cup, Baggio had a good start in Juventus, he scored 14 goals in 33 league games. On the 2nd of December, his wife brought a third person! Calm down, she just born their first child, Valentina. In the next season, Roberto played in 32 Serie A matches, got 18 goals.

92-93 seoson was Baggio's best season in Juventus, he put the ball into the net 21 times in 27 league games. Baggio also led Juventus to play in the UEFA Cup, he took part in 9 games and scored 6 goals, and Juventus became the champion, this was Roberto's first major title that he had ever won.

The following season, Baggio gave his 100th Serie A goal to Genoa. In December, he was recognized by the World, he became the European footballer and World's footballer. Baggio scored 17 goals in 32 league matches this season. In May, 1994, shortly before the World Cup, his wife born their 2nd child, named Mattia.

In World Cup '94, Roberto's ponytail and his excellent goals brought him a lot of supporters. Could enter the final was a good news, but Baggio hurt his thigh during the semi-final, and quite serious, the doctor told him not to play in the final. But he didn't want his fans disappointed, so he ignored his injury, went into the field again. However, his hurt thigh held him down, he couldn't find a way to score, but the most unfortunate was that during penalty shootout, Baggio missed the most important kick, therefore gave the cup to their opponent -- Brazil. Since then, the relationship between him and Sacchi has been worsen.

The injury from the World Cup made Baggio only played in 17 league matches and only got 8 goals. Although Juventus won both Serie A and Coppe Italia, the team moved towards Del Piero. And they said if Baggio accepted a decrease of 1/3 of the original salary, then he could stay. But of course Roby was not that foolish, he chose to leave, to either AC Milan or Inter Milan. Finally, on the 6th of July, he moved to the red and black AC Milan.

However, this was a really bad decision, because he was only a substitution, and was not in the mind of coach Capello. He played 28 matches but only got 7 goals. As a result, Roby had contributed very little to the winning of the league.

At the beginning of the next season, Baggio got some hope, because Capello left the team, Taberez arrived. But when everyone thought that he might go up again, the poor performance of Milan cost him the place in the start-up. Towards the end of the season, things went worse as Sacchi returned to Milan. Enemy met everyday, there was no chance for Baggio to stay. At last, in order to prove himself as a great player, he moved to a medium size team -- Bologna, on the 18th of July, 1997.

No more ponytail, Baggio proved his move to Bologna was totally right. He regained his form with helps from teammates, for example, Swedish Kennet Andersson, Russian Igor Kolyvanov, Italian Fontolan, and defender Paramatti, etc......Baggio finished this season with 22 goals, just 5 fewer than German Bierhoff, and 3 fewer than Brazilian, his current Inter Milan teammate -- Ronaldo. Inter therefore once again invited Roby to join. And he decided to go back to San Siro Stadium after World Cup '98.

The over-importance of Del Piero, and under-importance of Baggio by Cesare Maldini was one of the factors which caused the failure of the Italian team in World Cup France. The no.18 player did very good in France, with 2 goals. However in the third round, when the Italian met the host, although Baggio scored the first during the penalty shootout, Italy was once again kicked out.

After a season of good performance in Bologna and World Cup '98, many people did expect Baggio to continue this in Inter, since he had Ronaldo as his partner. However, as everybody could see, Roby's first season playing for Inter was not so good. The beginning of the season was not so well, they had lost 4 Serie A matches before the wonderful return of Baggio, he scored twice when Real Madrid travelled to San Siro. Since then Inter's supporters thought they could have a smoother season, but...

Injuries of Baggio, Ronaldo, Zamorano and Ventola totally broke down Inter's forward line, plus the poor defence at the back, ended up with a bad season without any trophy. They finished the local league in the 8th place, and were out of Italian Cup as beaten by Parma; while most importantly, they lost to Manchester United in European Champions League, who later beat Juventus and Bayern Munich to win the Cup.

The beginning of the 1999/2000 Season was full of expectation, with Vieri joining Inter, Baggio should be able to make a great combination with him. But unluckily the coach was the one who dumped Roby in Juventus -- Lippi. When he said that Baggio was in his Inter plan, everyone was satisfied, but soonly afterward they all realized that the coach's plan was to leave Roby outside the first team. With limited appearance, he didn't only lose a bit of form, but also a National Team place in EURO 2000, where the Italians lost the final match to the French.

Overall, this season might be again disappointing, but Roby did a wonderful job in his last game for the Milan team, as he scored two brilliant goals in the Champions League play-off match against Parma. After that he was eventually out of contract with Inter on 30th June.

After thinking for about four months, Baggio finally made a decision in September 2000 to join newly promoted club Brescia, mainly due to the fact that he could play much more than he could in bigger teams, and that it is close to his home in Vicenza. After two games against Juventus, it is obvious that going to Brescia was not a bad decision, and in fact he made history with a club that never stayed in Serie A for two consecutive seasons.

During the first three years with Brescia, captain Baggio led the team to three consecutive salvation in Serie A, and personally he scored 33 goals in 70 league games. The main reason for his success in these seasons was the understanding and believe from coach Mazzone, so that he had the chance to get the most out of himself, and show off his strengths. Also, Baggio had a number of high-quality teammates, including Spanish star Guardiola, wing Bachini, midfield rising star Appiah, defenders Petruzzi, Calori, Bonera, Martinez, as well as stable keeper Sereni. They had been in great assistance to Baggio, who could take the advantage and concentrate on organizing attacks.

The 2003/2004 season was Baggio's final year as a player, as he led Brescia to a historic 4th consecutive salvation. He scored his 200th Serie A goal in the match against Parma on 14th March 2004, after which he received a standing ovation from all the spectators at Parma's home ground, a great honour to a great soccer player.

Baggio played his final match on 16 May 2004, against an A.C. Milan led by his former teammate Paolo Maldini, when he left the field in the second half, all the players, coaches and staffs from both teams, as well as all the spectators at the San Siro Stadium gave him the biggest standing ovation to farewell one of the greatest soccer player in soccer history.

The story ends here, but his legendary will live forever in the heart of all soccer fans.

Een prachtige voetballer die een veel betere carriere verdient had. Niet dat Fiorentina, juventus, Ac milan, inter etc slechte clubs zijn, maar behalve de UEFA cup, europees en wereldvoetballer van het jaar heeft hij niet echt prijzen gewonnen. Ik heb altijd het gevoel dat hij veel meer had kunnen winnen en niet alles uit zijn carriere heeft kunnen halen door slechte keuzes. Een speler die een heel team kan dragen zoals hij dat deed op het WK van 1994, jammer dat hij de finale toen door een blessure niet voluit kon spelen. Een speler die helaas in Ac Milan en Inter niet het vertrouwen kreeg, waardoor hij ook nooit meer kon schitteren in het Nationale Elflal.

Hristo 'The Mad Bulgarian' Stoichkov, The Most Hated and Adored!

Behalve Ajax-shirts heb ik maar één ander shirt wat ik koester, het shirt van Barcelona 1992 met STOICHKOV achterop.
Als we gingen voetballen op straat, op schoolpleinen of illegaal op het hoofdveld van de plaatselijke amateurprutsers; ik wilde Stoichkov zijn.
Ik probeerde Hristo ook echt na te doen tijdens het voetballen, acties maken zoals ik hem op televisie had zien doen.
Als ik tijdens het voetballen het shirtje aanhad, leek het wel alsof ik beter ging voetballen.

Paolo di canio is een voetballer die de briljantste dingen kan doen met zn voeten, een voetballer met een eigen mening, een voetballer die soms iets uithaalt waarvan je het niet verwacht (een bal in zn handen nemen om een blessurebehandeling voor een keeper mogelijk te maken terwijl hij ook kan scoren) een voetballer die leeft zoals hij wil leven!
Het plaatje hierboven is veelzeggend: gevoelsmens paolo di canio viert de overwinning op as roma met zijn supporters d.m.v een romeinse groet!
Niet erg slim als je profvoetballer bent, maar paolo doet het toch!
Paolo doet altijd wat hij wil!

uitstekende keuze
maar je kan toch gewoon zeggen waarom je hem goed vind, een bio moet ik echt niet hebben (ga ik toch niet lezen )

wat ik wel raar vond, Wright was in CM 96 een slechte spits...

Ik was vroeger altijd Tscheu la Ling , waarchijnlijk omdat ik het op 't veld het tegenovergestelde was van deze wispelturige maar o zo heerlijke voetballer.

Favoriet aller tijden misschien niet, wel jeugdidool.

La Ling, daarvoor alleen al kocht je een kaartje.

ik heb ook favorieten gehad zoals Cantona, Henk Fraser en Josef Kiprich.

Sjaak Bruin! Geboren in Heemskerk op 20 augustus 1962, altijd bij ADO´20 gevoetbald, meer dan 600 wedstrijden in het eerste.

De man met de fantastische techniek, prachtige passes en een gigantisch loopvermogen. Zelfs toen ie op z´n 40e het 2e nog van degradatie behoedde, had ie de beste conditie van iedereen. En dat zegt meer over hem dan over de rest van het team. Wat een sportman!

Op 2 januari speelde hij met oud-ADO tegen het huidige eerste, de jonkies hadden het nog errug lastig met hem en vroegen zich zelfs af of hij niet een aanwinst zou zijn voor het eerste. Jammer dat ie is gestopt met voetballen.

Tsja Manny, het is wel degelijk een oud-romeinse groet.. Dat Hitler niet zo creatief was (zie hakenkruis) kunnen zij niks aan doen natuurlijk.

Dennis Bergkamp

Destijds voor mij de reden om voor Ajax te zijn, daarvoor interesseerde voetbal me nog niet zoveel. Het echt volgen van voetbal is ook later gekomen.
De liefde voor Ajax is echter gebleven, en Bergkamp is nog steeds mijn favoriete speler allertijden.

Zoals voor zovelen was voor mij ook het hoogtepunt hét doelpunt in '98.
Ik heb nog nooit zo hard lopen juichen na een doelpunt als toen.

Erg lastig... Er zijn al een aantal van mijn favorieten langs gekomen (Baggio, Batistuta, Bergkamp), maar ik denk er nog ff over na.....

Ik heb de grootheden van vroeger nooit zien spelen (Maradona, Cruijf, Pele), dus daarom mijn jeugheld, Jari Litmanen

Een van de meest bepalende spelers in het top-elftal van 94-95 en 95-96. Op de '10' scoorde hij erg vaak, en liet anderen scoren door prachtige pasjes te geven.
Zijn blessuregevoeligheid is natuurlijk zijn grote minpunt, ik vraag me af wat hij had kunnen bereiken als hij altijd fit was geweest

Vanmiddag na ASWH - DOVO zal ik ook wel een uitgebreide post neerzetten. Ik ben nu nog aan het denken wie het gaat winnen.

Ik heb altijd al iets gehad met het Franse voetbal, vanaf het moment dat ik de sport intensief begon te volgen. Clubs als AS Monaco, Paris Saint-Germain, AJ Auxerre, FC Nantes, Girondins Bordeaux en Olympique Marseille kregen altijd mijn steun in de Europacup en ook de nationale ploeg behoorde tot mijn favorieten. Zo was ik in 1992 bijna zeker dat de Fransen, met de kern van Marseille en aangevuld met de geniale Eric Cantona, het EK zouden winnen. Zeker omdat ze onder coach Platini ongeslagen het toernooi haalden. Het werd een deceptie, evenals het missen van het WK 1994. Desondanks bleef ik een liefhebber van het land en het voetbal daar.

Artiesten als David Ginola en Youri Djorkaeff sloot ik uiteraard vroeg in mijn hart, evenals Robert Pires en later Thierry Henry. De besten zag ik echter in Bordeaux. Ik zal nooit vergeten hoe die ploeg, met Richard Witschge in de gelederen, ooit AC Milan wegspeelde in de UEFA Cup. Lizarazu deed het als linksback goed, Witschge was prima bezig, spits Christophe Dugarry speelde ronduit sensationeel en dwong daarmee een transfer naar Milaan af, maar de beste man was uiteraard de toen al kalende Zinedine Zidane.

De man met de fabelachtige techniek, het haast onaardse inzicht en het ook nog eens grote loopvermogen heerste op het middenveld. De nieuwe en verbeterde versie van Platini stond die avond definitief op. Vanaf toen was ik fan. Dat viel best zwaar. Want ik voorspelde een uitblinkende Zidane op het EK van 1996 en toen faalde Frankrijk toch weer en liet Zidane weinig zien.

Door zijn spel bij Juventus viel hij wat meer op, maar het mooiste was het WK 1998. Ik zette uiteraard in op Frankrijk als wereldkampioen en won daar ruim 200 gulden mee dat jaar. Maar het mooist vond ik eigenlijk dat Zidane zich, na een onbezonnen rode kaart, revancheerde in de finale zelf.

Goed beschouwd was zijn beste toernooi het EK van 2000 en vanaf toen ging het iets minder met hem. Desondanks geniet ik nog altijd als ik hem zie spelen en denk ik dat hij minimaal tot de beste vijf spelers ooit hoort, samen met Cruijff, Pelé, Maradona en Beckenbauer.

Nou, iemand die jaren zo goed is in het huidige, veel snellere, voetbal... Ik denk dat je in decennia moet denken en dat Zidane dan de ster van de jaren '90 - '00 is.

Dit komt vooral doordat ik hem als tienjarig jongetje live zag spelen. Ik wilde PH zijn, rennen over de rechterflank, voorzetten geven en inkoppen Vooral koppen, daar was hij goed in. Ik vond hem fantastisch. Kopballen zijn het mooiste in voet(!)bal. Ik ben daarom fan van Martin Drent


en Dirk Kuijt, maar dat is logisch....
