Over the last few years there have been two artists that have claimed to have created the famous heavy metal "devil's horns" hand signal: Ronnie James Dio (BLACK SABBATH) and Gene Simmons (KISS).

You know the "devil's horns" signal? It is the universal heavy metal sign for "you rock", usually used in unison with the music at heavy metal concerts. Not to get satanical or anything, but the sign is supposed to represent the sign of the beast, with horns represented by the index finger and pinkie raised. If you raise both hands with this sign, the band "really rocks!"

That are two heavy metal rockers from the '70s both laying claim. Ronnie James Dio claimed to have created the gesture before joining BLACK SABBATH in 1978. Gene Simmons also claims credit, writing in his 2002 autobiography that it was the bass-playing demon of KISS that created the international heavy metal symbol. So there is no evidence that the symbol was created earlier than the '70s...or is there?!

We have discovered irrefutable photographic evidence that is was none other than Beatle John Lennon that created the famous sign in 1967. Furthermore, it was even used in animation for the BEATLES "Yellow Submarine" (just check the original vinyl album cover). These are two photographic images that can be tied down to specific years PRIOR to the '70s.

The photo of Lennon giving the sign appeared in one of the first BEATLES pictures in which the band promoted the upcoming "Yellow Submarine" animated movie. Since the BEATLES changed appearance often and were one of the most photographed icons of the '60s, it is possible to date the photo between June and October of '67. "Yellow Submarine" was being animated between '67 & '68, so the cartoon image of John flashing the heavy metal sign can also be verified date-wise. Although the film "Yellow Submarine" was released in 1968, the vinyl album (on which one can clearly see Lennon displaying the sign) was not released in the U.S. until 1969. But that is still years before Ronnie James Dio or Gene Simmons!

What other ties does Lennon have to heavy metal? Well, he claimed that the BEATLES song, "Ticket To Ride" was "one of the earliest heavy metal records ever made". How fitting that it was Lennon who also created the best-known symbol of heavy metal!

European Tour Report Part 2

Today was a good day. Maybe it was the heady brew of antique waterways and Dutch friendliness, dykes or straights, but Amsterdam is always a good place for us to play, but that might possibly be the floaty pink elephants talking.
Today had to be a good day as the last time that we played in the vicinity (last Summer's Waldrock festival) was a disaster of epic, nay, monumental proportions.
To briefly explain the situation, we were terrible at a headlining show in front of thousands of fans. The reason being, if the truth be told, was that we were flitting between festivals and mixing the album at the same time and it was beginning to take it's toll, especially on me, who was beginning to feel a bit ground under the millstone. Add to this sloth-like concoction a day's worth of interviews (by the end of which there was no food left to eat as those bands with considerably less interviews than us had scoffed the bloody lot), technical stage problems and a skinful of booze, the result was disastrous. Thus it was precisely the reason that tonight's show had to be our redemption and in a way, our apology.


But onto that later....


For the most part of the afternoon Adrian, Martin, Charles and James disappeared into the city centre to buy annoying mooing cow devices whilst the daily activities of life on the road carried on as serenely as they had done for the last couple of shows. Then about four thirty and without soundcheck, everybody was ushered into the back of vans heading towards our first instore of the tour at the Boudisque on the Haringpakkerssteeg where four to five hundred kids were awaiting us. Normally one would expect this kind of thing to be a bit overwhelming especially in confined spaces, but i really get off on meeting the fans face to face and they are our bread and butter after all.
A busy hour and a half later (someone was overheard to have been asked if their hand hurt after all that signing, only to reply rather intrinsically that it wasn't because of the signing that his hand hurt....) and after picking up some freebies, we were dashing back to the venue to quickly cough back some burgers and then think about getting ready for the show. The editing suite at the back of our coach has already doubled up as my official warming-up space (mainly because of the stereo and the fact that i can make as much unwholesome noise as i damn well please without upsetting any of the others), therefore i didn't see hide nor hair of anybody until about fifteen minutes prior to going on backstage where the ritual of donning leather and lamp oil continues to this day.
The show itself was awesome, everybody pushing the envelope back to make this one as good as it could get and there were some really interactive moments between the band, performers and the stage layout, especially the very effective grilled floor lighting, wreathed in swirling smoke and thrashing shadow. The audience were really up for it too as the whole place erupted to the likes of 'Nemesis', 'Tortured Soul Asylum' and 'Thirteen Autumns and a Widow' though there was a slightly worrying moment when one girl collapsed in the pit for a track until the security rightly waded in to her rescue, so of course if you see anything like this from the stage it's a concern, though this sort of fare is rare and far between i will hasten to add!
Anyway, she was fine and the show rocked like a mutherfucka, especially when the crowd were asked to shout out 'Happy Birthday' for Sarah Jezebel, who suddenly became the most shy and quiet female on the planet at that tumultuous moment. Lost for words... I thought I'd never see the day.
Afterwards we hung out with our record company reps, drank, watched Judas Priest on the bus and the bleary-eyed sludge monster returned in the ineffable shape of Paul 'slopbucket' Allender. Charles once again brought blondes into total disrepute with a comment to floor giants...
'How do you get that mirror to light up from behind?' he asked of Martin.
I'm surprised that he then didn't ask just who that weird chap was that was constantly facing him in it either...

waarom? Zoveel soeps heeft Helloween gewoon niet afgeleverd. Alleen The Dark Ride vind ik goed te verteren (al is dat bij de meesten juist niet het geval). Het debuut van Masterplan is gewoon ijzersterk, en ook de nieuwe is erg goed. Helloween mocht willen dat ze zulke platen maakten.
