Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
On his return to the neighborhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.

Map:
The Facts:- San Fierro is the 'stunting' capital of San Andreas, with more unique jump locations here than in any other city.
- San Fierro still bears the scars of the 1989 earthquake that hit its real life counterpart, San Francisco.
- Cobra Martial Arts, San Fierro's Dojo-style gym is well equipped, featuring a weight set, treadmill and experienced Sensei to whip you into shape.
- The Sensei's particular strength is kicking, where he will take you through each move you wish to learn in detail, showing button combinations on screen.
- At the game's car customisation shops, there are differing levels of nitro available, with the more expensive giving a longer, faster boost. Nitro also gives the car the ability to destroy some objects, as if it were 'invincible' to them. Once the cylinder is empty, it takes around one minute to recharge.
- Detailed audio is included in specific areas to create atmosphere, such as the tinny echo heard when below deck on the freight tanker moored off the coast of San Fierro.
- Go-karts will be included, with a likely go-kart track unconfirmed at this time.
- Some safehouses in San Andreas will be free for Carl to use, while some will only be available after purchasing property. The first he'll have available is his mother's old home, which like all others, includes a wardrobe full of all the clothes he's bought and a save game icon, this time shaped like a 3.5" Floppy Disk. (Rather than Vice City's Audio Cassette).
- Pressing L1 while holding a weapon will display a white meter detailing how proficient CJ is with that particular firearm. Levels include 'Poor', 'Gangster' and 'Hitman'.
- The fastest way to increase Carl's ability with a weapon is to visit Ammunation, where a firing range mini-game sees him pitted against two rivals. Basically, the shooter with the most number of hits in the least amount of time is the victor.
- Cars can be modified to feature hard, soft or open topped roofs, with even the stereo's bass level open for customisation.
- The driving school is vital to providing CJ with the skills he needs to perform advanced maneuvers in vehicles, like sharp turns at high speeds and emergency stops.
- Four wheeled vehicles can now also be controlled in mid air, similar, but in a much slower fashion than Vice City's motorbikes.
- A boating school will challenge players to drive vehicles around water courses, avoiding collision with as many buoys as possible. Eventually, CJ will be able to control boats in a much easier manner than seen in past GTA titles.
- Boarding a train at one of San Andreas' railway stations will provide a cinematic window view of the journey, such as the vast rural expanses.
- Hijacking a train is easy aswell, just approaching the cabin and removing the driver will do the trick.
- Trains are heavy vehicles, and as such, take a long time to gain maximum momentum, and to stop. Missions involve driving the trains (which have no steering controls) great distances and bringing them to a halt in extremely specific places.
- When in gang wars, you will be able to give the gang members that respect you tactical advice (such as in a war simulation game).
- Playing basketball will be a side-game such as ambulance missions or gambling in casinos.
- As in the previous GTAs, the standard police force (LSPD) will give up after 4 wanted stars, leaving you to defend yourself from tougher forces at 5 & 6 stars.
- Shop owners will draw weapons and defend themselves if they feel threatened
- R* reckon that it takes 100 hours to complete the main story missions.
- Cop helicopter fly around the cities, searching for criminals even when you havent got any stars.
- Kung fu, boxing street fighting can all be learnt, once you have learnt them you can use them and mix and match between them.
- Possibility of hot dog R3 missions!
- The Gant bridge is SO big that the weather can be different on both ends.
you have 360 degree camera control. The faster you go the less rotation is allowed - eg. go fast and you can only look left and right.
- Los Santos property costs a lot of money.
- You can drive a combine harvester into the city.
- No 2 buildings are the same (with the exception of a selection of houses in estates which would look the same in real life).
- CJ can vault over ledges one handed.
- The bulldozer will be steered by the rear wheels rather than the front.
- The riding lawnmower is the slowest vehicle in the game.
- Along with the already-confirmed katana, the golf club makes a return, too.
- The BMX and mountain bike are different in that the mountain bike has gears that are chosen automatically. Manual gear shifting is not yet confirmed.
- Just as you could stop criminals from running from the cops in Vice City and get $50, you can do the same except with putting out fires in San Andreas. The money reward amount is not confirmed.
- One animation improvement is that Carl will not only change his stance with each new weapon, but he will also change stances with the same weapon as his skills increase with that particular weapon.
- One of the ways that aircraft are more improved in San Andreas is that the crop duster can preform maneuvers such as barrel rolls, hammerheads and loops.
- Carl automatically targets enemies heads when he is at the correct range.
- The first place you find the desert eagle and the shovel is in the desert.
- Characters will respond to noise (gunshots, explosions) more realistically.
- Carl can lock onto anyone in the game (even if he isn't holding a weapon).
- Some of the time, you will be able to block (depends on the weapon that Carl is holding).
- Fires will play a bigger role than you might think. Through explosions from cars, grenades or even molotov cocktails, you could set fire to a huge portion of the map. This includes buildings, countryside and more. This can be used to your advantage, of course.
- PSM2 said that they drove from Los Santos to Las Venturas in 5 minutes on a Wayfarer. That was however, taking the shortest route, and the same journey would take 30 minutes cross-country.
- PSM2 are convinced that skateboards will be in the game.
- They also claim that you can control all of the planes in San Andreas, including Private Jets. You can carry up to eight gang members with you on a bigger plane/helicopter.
- No more heart icons—Eating food is the only way to replenish your health.
- They are also pretty sure that there will be quad bike racing side missions.
- PSM2 say that, when on a BMX, you can bunny hop by holding down L1. The longer you hold it the further you jump.
- You will be able to fire at enemies when backing up on your motorcycle or bike.
- A plough is in the game and Carl can use it to smash through buildings, flip cars and cause chaos all over San Andreas.
- There are several environmental objects that you will be able to destroy: milk crates, chain-linked and barb-wire fences, several types of plants, couches, chairs, other furniture and etc.
- In the centre of the Cobra Martial Arts dojo of San Fierro is the sensei inside a ring. Once you can get him in a conversation, you will be able to learn from him.
- At the start of the game CJ is equipped for fighting with what he knows from the streets. Going to dojos gives him new fighting styles, and you will be able to go back to different dojos to learn different styles. You will not be able to get back CJ's original street fighting style.
- There are buildings which are slowly rebuilding in the city, victims of an earthquake.
- Cinematic stunt features are back (without surprise).
- New audio features include echos in closed spaces on a cargo ship.
- Your first safehouse will be CJ's mother's old house. Here you will be able to save your game (in an icon the shape of a floppy disk) and change your clothes.
- As the game moves on, more safehouses will be available to you, some of which you will have to purchase.
- In CJ's apartment there is a naked picture of Candy Suxxx on the wall, just as in Tommy's office in VC.
- By drawing a weapon and pressing L1 you will be able to view your skill level with that weapon. You will start out with "Poor" with all weapons, but will be able to progress to "Gangster" and even "Hitman."
- Walking up to a red marker in front of a schooling facility, you will be able to partake in challenges of the school and increase your proficiency in that area. (For example driving school and boating school)
- Cranberry Station of San Fierro will be a place where you can see trains. As opposed to sitting inside as a passenger and travelling around, you will also be able to jack the train and perform freight train missions, which consist of you driving trains to the right station to drop off cargo.
Weapon Skills:- The quickest way to upgrade skill levels will be to go to a Ammu-Nation with a shooting range and participate in competitions there.
- As you gain your weapon skills, bonuses will be awarded. You will be able to fire quicker, steadier, and you will be able to run/strafe while holding two weapons for example. (Gamespot, at this point, brings the example of holding a sawed-off double barreled shotgun in each hand and what a mess you can create with these.)
Driving & Boating School:- You will be able to go to driving school, where you will learn how to control your vehicle better. You will be able to control where you put the weight of your vehicle while in mid-air, how to make controlled stops, drive with your tires shot out and so on.
- In boat school you will be able to increase your boating skills. While earning points for completing goals, points will be deducted for boat damage.
Train Missions: - While in control of a train, you have two controls: stop and go. Inside trains you will also be presented with a time limit for freight train missions, distance to train station and speed.
- Freight train missions pay a lot, but they're fairly complicated to master since you have to adhere to a tight time schedule, and driving fast on corners will derail your train.
Gang Info:- Rockstar North did some 'gang research' whilst developing San Andreas. To help with this, they consulted DJ Pooh, Mister Cartoon, Estevan Oriol, and hundreds of other people.
- Gangs in Los Santos include: The Orange Grove Families, the Ballas, the Vagos, and the Varrios Los Aztecas.
- Gang members are recognised by their clothing, tattoos, and hand signs. These are useful for two reasons--It allows police to identify gang set or victim, and it allows gang members to interact.
The downside is, people in Los Santos musn't wear the wrong colours, or they'll be in for a beating!
- The character models now have fingers (No more blocky hands!)
- Each gang has its own territory, indicated by street warnings, wall graffiti, or simply violence. ie,
Ballas jacking a pedestrian's car, drive-by shootings and such.
- Each of the 4 gangs in Los Santos is split up into 'sets'. This is good and bad news. Bad because, not all sets get along, and good, because there's plenty of backup.
