Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is being developed by Electronic Arts Los Angeles (EALA). EALA co-developed Allied Assault and then created the expansion pack, Spearhead. After Spearhead the internal team immediately started designing Pacific Assault. Part of the strategy with Pacific Assault was to create a new state of the art engine and this has been developed by the internal team. The team at EALA is very talented and passionate about Medal of Honor. By developing the product internally we have more control over the overall quality of the product.
The primary goal has been to create a worthy successor to Allied Assault. Allied Assault defined a new genre of gaming and set a bar of quality that competitors have been trying to overcome ever since. The goal with Pacific Assault has been to move that bar up a couple more notches. The key tenets of Medal of Honor are always part of our development goals: historical accuracy, rich/alive environments, deep storyline and character development, and engaging game play. In addition to all these, with MOHPA EALA are also focusing on new AI systems, squad development, more multiplayer gameplay and features, as well as physics integrated as part of the world.
The release of Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is expected to be in the end of September 2004.
Singleplayer
The singleplayer in Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault will have a wide variety of new features to the Medal of Honor franchise. Before we mention all these new features, we will tell some more about the missions in the MOHPA Singleplayer Campaign.
In Pacific Assault you will have to fight your way through 35 expansive singleplayer levels. These levels are spread over 7 large missions in the Pacific Theater of operations during World War 2.
Pacific Assault covers the first two years of the US Marines in the war battling against the Japanese. The story follows your character, Tommy Conlin,
and the friends he meets in boot camp. Pacific Assault certainly delivers upon the important, pivotal moments in the pacific theatre of operations. You start with the attack on Pearl Harbor. You fight for Henderson Airfield on Guadalcanal. And then there is the assault on Tarawa Island which was one of the hardest fought battles of the war. The exact details about the 7 singleplayer missions will not be given, Electronic Arts Los Angeles (the developer) wants to surprise you.
The missions vary from overrunning Japanese defensive positions, defending allied controlled islands, search and destroy, rescue downed pilots and more. EA Los Angeles researched all the great battles of the Pacific and bring them to life in Pacific Assault.
New features in the singleplayer:
Revamped A.I. -- The all-new artificial intelligence takes advantage of squad tactics to create real, emergent environments. EALA completely redesigned the AI system for Pacific Assault. They developed a dynamic AI system where your squad and the enemies change tactics based upon battlefield conditions. How the player goes through the world affects what the AI will do. They have done away with scripted AI for this dynamic, changing system. The game can be played through numerous times with different results each time. A moral system has been added to the AI which also affects their behavior. For example, if the Japanese officer is eliminated the morale of the squad will drop considerably and the changes of a banzai charge increase considerably. The new AI system provides a more dynamic, exciting, and authentic experience.
"Adaptive Dynamic AI Dialogue": The player's squadmates as well as the enemies actually speak, yell, and call out to you and their squadmates in real time. This helps you know exactly what is going on as you play, so it will be very helpful for players to pay close attention to what the Japanese are saying and recognize some of their tactical call outs.
"Verge of Death." In Pacific Assault, when you get shot, the wound will affect you physically; you'll start to slow down, your breathing will change, you'll hear your heart slow down, your senses will diminish, the world will get progressively blurrier as you bleed out, your hearing will become muffled, and the battle will progress as if everything is happening in slow motion. You'll fall to the ground and watch the action around you as if you're in a dream. This is what the veterans tell actually happened to them when they were wounded during battle. EALA is re-creating it for you, and just as in battle, you can be revived.
In an effort to drive authenticity to the max, EALA has to get rid of the arcade elements found in almost every first-person shooter. No more convenient med packs and canteens lying around the battlefield. No more ammo packs strewn about--just medics (corpsman, in this case) are present with every squad. The player gets to use what ammo he and the squad went in with and could carry. Stripping fallen comrades of their weapons and ammo was common practice in the Pacific. In Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, if you get shot you have a couple of choices: Stagger about until you bleed out, self-bandage to temporarily stop the bleeding, or crawl to cover and call for some help. Hopefully the corpsman will be close enough to come to your aid. You'll also need to cover him while he's attending to you. (Unlike in Europe, the Japanese gave no quarter to medics or corpsman. In fact, they would target them, knowing that morale would suffer if nobody was able to help the wounded on the battlefield. This is why you see no insignia on medics and corpsman in the Pacific.)
Fighting in the Pacific was less about being a hero than it was about acting as a team. This is the single difference that separates Pacific Assault from Allied Assault and all of its competitors. You have to work together. Sure you can still run 'n' gun,
but it will be no picnic and chances are even the best players in the world will eat it. Stay with your squad, use their cover fire, try different tactics, keep them alive--you'll need them to survive.
Medal of Honor Pacific Assault is a new chapter for Medal of Honor for both the single player as well as the multiplayer game. EA has always been committed to the multiplayer experience and the online community. This commitment has never been more evident than in Pacific Assault. The goal of the multiplayer game is to introduce a new game type, Invader, which focuses on team play including the introduction of classes. In addition to this new game type, EA has also put a lot of effort into multiplayer features and community support. Anti-cheat technology, stat tracking, improved interface, and more are just examples of the rich full
multiplayer world being created for Pacific Assault.
Key Features:
Invader Gametype - The new gamemode for MOHPA, Invader, features groups of players organized into offensive and defensive teams. The offense must take over a series of objectives that the defense must protect. As the offense accomplishes objectives, the spawn points advance, always keeping the action focused on achieving the current objective.
Class Based Gameplay - For the first time in the history of the Medal of Honor franchise, MOHPA features the introduction of multiplayer classes. Players can now assume the role of Infantry, Corpsmen, Ammo Technicians, and Combat Engineers, increasing the opportunities for team-play and cooperation.
New Weapon Set - The multiplayer game will utilize all the same weapons available in the single player game which includes a new set of weapons, including Bayonets for both Axis and Allied players.
8 Unique Multiplayer Scenarios for up to 32 players - Instead of recycling single-player levels and retrofitting them for multiplayer, MOHPA offers 8 totally original gameplay scenarios to players, based both upon historical engagements as well as fictionalized scenarios.
Buddy Lists & Chat Lobby - Users will be able to access a new room-based chat lobby in the game’s interface prior to joining a game. Buddy List features will also be provided that will give users the tools to find and keep in touch with friends and clanmates, ignore users who may be harassing them, or join their buddies in games already in progress.
Anti-Cheat Technology & CD Key Banning - MOHPA will deliver a quality, cheat-free
multiplayer experience out of the box by shipping with anti-cheat technology including PunkBusterTM, minimizing the influence of hacks and cheaters. Admins will also have the ability to permanently ban abusive users from their servers via a Global User ID encrypted from their CD Key.
Improved MOD Support - MOHPA will feature an integrated Modification browser that will better allow users to specify what custom mods they’d like to run on their servers and where the mods can be found on the Internet. Improved load screens will help guide users through the process of automating mod downloads from the server or will redirect them to an external website. With improved tools, tutorial, and community support, our goal is to ensure that our customers’ experience with user-created mods is as seamless and easy to use, giving them the ability to keep the online experience fresh.
These are only a few features from the massive list of new features in Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault.
