Nu er toch zoveel aan series uit Amerika wordt gedownload wil ik jullie op deze show wijzen. Imho is het samen met "The daily show" het grappigst wat er te zien is (in peer2peerland that is )

david chappelle vind ik zo grappig. hij was zo'n beetje t leukste in robin hood; men in tights en undercover brother. zijn stand up show is ook erg grappig, jammer alleen dat ie zo kort is. ik ben erg benieuwd of ik deze show kan vinden op t net. ik zag namelijk wel laatst een skit van hem over samuel l jackson. die was erg grappig.
leuk dat hij eigenlijk de show van chris rock heeft overgenomen, nou maar hopen dat hij er meer dan twee seizoenen van maakt(of dat bernie mac het volgend seizoen van m overneemt)

Ik heb het eerste seizoen gezien en de eerste 4 afleveringen van seizoen twee (alles al drie keer). De show is hilarisch. Welliswaar zitten er ook mindere stukjes bij, maar dat heb je met elke show. Tweede seizoen is overigens veel beter. In het eerste seizoen is die nog aan het zoeken. Die Black White Supremacist skit vond ik helemaal niet grappig.

Dave Chappelle is an equal opportunity offender on his hit sketch show on Comedy Central.
March 10, 2004 -- Heard the one about the blind white supremacist who doesn't realize he's actually black?
How about the "racial draft," in which teams of Jews, Asians, Latinos and African-Americans trade for ethnically obscure celebrities like Colin Powell, Mariah Carey and Tiger Woods?
If not, then you haven't been watching one of the surprise hits of the TV season, "Chappelle's Show," hosted by and starring the 30-year-old New York comic Dave Chappelle.
"The show pushes boundaries in such an intelligent way," says fan Matt Iselin, 29, a physical therapist and keyboard player for the band Afroskull.
"It's just hysterical. And in a sick kind of way, it almost makes it appropriate to say inappropriate things at work."
Chappelle earned that rep with provocative, razor-sharp pieces like the one about the racial draft, in which the African-American team chooses Woods.
"Tiger has been discriminated against, he's had death threats, and he dates white women," explains a play-by-play announcer played by Chappelle.
"Sounds like a black man to me."
In another much-talked-about skit, Chappelle spoofed Red Bull commercials with a fake ad for "Red Balls," featuring a drug addict who uses the drink to generate bionic powers that allow him to steal a car radio and then break out of jail.
The half-hour sketch comedy series, which airs Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. on Comedy Central, is getting huge ratings for the cable network - an average of 2.5 million viewers a week, just behind Comedy Central's highest-rated show, "South Park."
And, as on "South Park," no celeb is safe.
An oft-repeated line from one sketch - "I'm Rick James' bitch!" - could land in the same category as the Bart Simpson classic "Don't have a cow, man!"
Back when that catchphrase was first printed on T-shirts, Chappelle was a 14-year-old comic in his native Washington, D.C., telling Jesse Jackson jokes in any club that would let him on stage.
Chappelle's first fan was his mother, a Unitarian minister who encouraged his show-biz dreams and chauffered him to his gigs because she felt he was safer on stage than on the street, where crack was at its peak.
After high school, Chappelle moved to Manhattan and gigged at downtown comedy clubs before scoring roles in such movies as 1996's "The Nutty Professor" and 1997's "Con Air," in which he played Pinball Parker, a rioting convict who meets his death after being ejected from an airplane.
He finally got his first major starring role as Thurgood Jenkins / Sir Smoke-a-lot in the 1998 pot comedy "Half Baked," which is now a cult-classic among college kids.
Chappelle, who is married and has two children, co-wrote "Baked" with the white comic Neal Brennan, who is now a executive producer on "Chappelle's Show."
In each episode, the pair unabashedly tackle tough issues like racism and drug addiction thoughtfully - and cleverly.
Perhaps their first masterpiece was the black white-supremacist sketch from the first season, which was released on DVD last month.
"It was a fantastic sketch," recalls Bill Hilary, Comedy Central's executive vice president and general manager. "Chappelle had a very smart and important point to make: Anyone can be a racist.

"Mr. Hankey makes more than me," he said, alluding to an animated character on the network's "South Park." We don't see why he isn't making money either. According to the Reporter, "Chappelle Show" is the highest rated original series on basic cable, even higher than "South Park"(!!).
Sources say Dave is fielding movie offers and inquiries from rival networks, who are wondering whether Comedy will be able to afford to lavish him with the kind of contract that kept the likes of Jon Stewart around.

Several weeks back, Lil Jon, Usher and Ludacris were in the "TRL" studio preparing for their performance of "Yeah!" But it wasn't "Yeah!" that was being yelled.
"Whuuuut? Whuuuut? Whuuuut?" Usher kept exclaiming, imitating a then recently aired skit on "Chappelle's Show" in which Dave Chappelle exaggerated the king of crunk's quirky call outs. "Okaaayyy! Okaaayyy!" Usher continued before Jon, who was stationed at the turntables, joined in and imitated Chappelle imitating him. "Whuuuut?"
The joke got so good that Jon started into another of Chappelle's skits, mimicking the comic's impression of funk lord Rick James. "Daaarknesss!" Jon yelled. The catch phrase comes from a skit in which Chappelle made light of real-life accounts given by Eddie Murphy's brother, Charlie, of partying with Rick James, getting into physical altercations, and then making up.
"F--- your couch, n---a!" Jon continued, trying to sound as close to Chappelle's imitation as possible. "They should've never gave you n---as mon-aaayyyy!"
"He's never gonna let that go," Ludacris said with a laugh.
Chappelle's fans, especially those in the hip-hop community, can't let go of the comedian's irreverent brand of social spoofing. Although the second season has come to an end, people are still talking about it.
"I think the best episode that I've seen thus far is him imitating Lil Jon," Usher said. "That was the craziest one. I don't think that it will ever be done better. It was classic. He got him real good. 'Yeeeaaah! Okaaayyy!' "
"This Dave Chappelle sh-- just really put me on a different level," said Jon, who claims to love the ribbing he gets on the show. "He basically has thrusted me into pop culture, and not just urban but white society as well. I was in the airport like three weeks ago, this 60-year-old white lady came up to me and was like, 'Aren't you Lil Jon? ... Don't you do that "Whuuuut? Yeeeaaah! Okaaayyy!" That's you, right?' "
Since Chappelle debuted his show last year on Comedy Central, the comedian has repped for rappers not only by making fun of them, but by bringing them on the program. Wu-Tang's RZA and GZA have been featured in skits, and Kanye West, Common and DMX have performed. "A lot of these guys are my friends, and I'm fans of all these dudes," Chappelle said. "I'm trying to get people who push the culture forward."
He even employs rap-world veteran Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the Roots. "I am music supervisor for the Dave Chappelle show simply because I am a fanatic for Dave Chappelle," Thompson said. "He's a genius. He's a comic genius."
"I think he's good for the community and culture," said Roc-A-Fella mogul Dame Dash, who has appeared on the show. "He's the truth. He knows how to be political in a funny way. You see things from his perspective."
"I just think he took a great opportunity, since nobody [else] is out right now," Cam'ron said, pointing out that hip-hop has few places to be represented in comedy these days, without "Def Comedy Jam," "Martin," "The Chris Rock Show" or "In Living Color" on the airwaves. "There's nobody doing anything decent."
Chappelle has never had a problem making people laugh, standing out despite his small parts in movies such as "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "Undercover Brother" and "Blue Streak." But when he tried to take his humor to TV, dealing with a network led to everything falling apart.
"I tried sitcoms before, and it's something about the way I'm funny that is not for that venue," Chappelle insisted earlier this year during a radio tour in New York. "People would never know the extent of how funny I was. I'd be like Urkel. I'd be rich, but I'd be Urkel.
"I love working here," Dave said of Comedy Central. "They give you the opportunity to actually be a comedian. On regular TV, you end up doing stuff that's not necessarily genuine, that's not necessarily you, just to appeal to a larger audience."
And keeping it real has helped Chappelle skyrocket to fame. Punch lines from his sketches are more often quoted these days than anything from similar series like "Saturday Night Live" or "Mad TV."
"I am totally freaked out," Rick James said, laughing. "It shocked the sh-- out of me. I had no idea that comedy had that much of an impact."
James' real-life phrases like "It's a celebration" and his most popular, "I'm Rick James, bitch!," have bled into popular culture thanks to Chappelle.
"It's helped Dave out, it's helped Charlie [Murphy] out, and it's helped me out," James said. "I've always been able to laugh at myself, the character Rick James. I created it, that extroverted part of James Johnson. I was able to laugh at myself 'cause that's what it's meant for, it's meant to have fun with. It's not meant to be serious."
For the record, James said that the skit's account of what happened "was true, it was just exaggerated. It was really me kicking [Charlie's] ass more than him kicking mine."
Prince, whom Dave also portrayed in a Charlie Murphy retelling, said his segment was also exaggerated. He didn't challenge Murphy to a basketball game while wearing high heels and a purple suit. "That part's not true," Prince said about his game attire. "But the whupping's true."
Though Dave has heard from the Purple One, Lil Jon and Rick James, the comedian said there has been no communication between him and another famous mic controller who found himself the butt of a sketch: R. Kelly. During the skit, Dave sings a song as Kelly, talking about how much he wants to urinate on a girl — something that happens in the sex tape at the center of Kelly's legal woes.
"The thing about it is, I'm an R. Kelly fan, but it's basically a song about peeing on people," Chappelle said. " 'Pee on You' was a doozy. But it's one of those things that it's too funny not to do. You might have a moral dilemma like, 'Should I do it?' But like I said, it's in the spirit of comedy."
"Chappelle's Show" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central, and with another season of original episodes in the can, Dave has hit the road. He's on a stand-up tour through July 3.

"Whuuuut? Whuuuut? Whuuuut?" Usher kept exclaiming, imitating a then recently aired skit on "Chappelle's Show" in which Dave Chappelle exaggerated the king of crunk's quirky call outs. "Okaaayyy! Okaaayyy!" Usher continued before Jon, who was stationed at the turntables, joined in and imitated Chappelle imitating him. "Whuuuut?"
The joke got so good that Jon started into another of Chappelle's skits, mimicking the comic's impression of funk lord Rick James. "Daaarknesss!" Jon yelled. The catch phrase comes from a skit in which Chappelle made light of real-life accounts given by Eddie Murphy's brother, Charlie, of partying with Rick James, getting into physical altercations, and then making up.
"F--- your couch, n---a!" Jon continued, trying to sound as close to Chappelle's imitation as possible. "They should've never gave you n---as mon-aaayyyy!"
"He's never gonna let that go," Ludacris said with a laugh.
Chappelle's fans, especially those in the hip-hop community, can't let go of the comedian's irreverent brand of social spoofing. Although the second season has come to an end, people are still talking about it.
"I think the best episode that I've seen thus far is him imitating Lil Jon," Usher said. "That was the craziest one. I don't think that it will ever be done better. It was classic. He got him real good. 'Yeeeaaah! Okaaayyy!' "
"This Dave Chappelle sh-- just really put me on a different level," said Jon, who claims to love the ribbing he gets on the show. "He basically has thrusted me into pop culture, and not just urban but white society as well. I was in the airport like three weeks ago, this 60-year-old white lady came up to me and was like, 'Aren't you Lil Jon? ... Don't you do that "Whuuuut? Yeeeaaah! Okaaayyy!" That's you, right?' "
Since Chappelle debuted his show last year on Comedy Central, the comedian has repped for rappers not only by making fun of them, but by bringing them on the program. Wu-Tang's RZA and GZA have been featured in skits, and Kanye West, Common and DMX have performed. "A lot of these guys are my friends, and I'm fans of all these dudes," Chappelle said. "I'm trying to get people who push the culture forward."
He even employs rap-world veteran Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of the Roots. "I am music supervisor for the Dave Chappelle show simply because I am a fanatic for Dave Chappelle," Thompson said. "He's a genius. He's a comic genius."
"I think he's good for the community and culture," said Roc-A-Fella mogul Dame Dash, who has appeared on the show. "He's the truth. He knows how to be political in a funny way. You see things from his perspective."
"I just think he took a great opportunity, since nobody [else] is out right now," Cam'ron said, pointing out that hip-hop has few places to be represented in comedy these days, without "Def Comedy Jam," "Martin," "The Chris Rock Show" or "In Living Color" on the airwaves. "There's nobody doing anything decent."
Chappelle has never had a problem making people laugh, standing out despite his small parts in movies such as "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "Undercover Brother" and "Blue Streak." But when he tried to take his humor to TV, dealing with a network led to everything falling apart.
"I tried sitcoms before, and it's something about the way I'm funny that is not for that venue," Chappelle insisted earlier this year during a radio tour in New York. "People would never know the extent of how funny I was. I'd be like Urkel. I'd be rich, but I'd be Urkel.
"I love working here," Dave said of Comedy Central. "They give you the opportunity to actually be a comedian. On regular TV, you end up doing stuff that's not necessarily genuine, that's not necessarily you, just to appeal to a larger audience."
And keeping it real has helped Chappelle skyrocket to fame. Punch lines from his sketches are more often quoted these days than anything from similar series like "Saturday Night Live" or "Mad TV."
"I am totally freaked out," Rick James said, laughing. "It shocked the sh-- out of me. I had no idea that comedy had that much of an impact."
James' real-life phrases like "It's a celebration" and his most popular, "I'm Rick James, bitch!," have bled into popular culture thanks to Chappelle.
"It's helped Dave out, it's helped Charlie [Murphy] out, and it's helped me out," James said. "I've always been able to laugh at myself, the character Rick James. I created it, that extroverted part of James Johnson. I was able to laugh at myself 'cause that's what it's meant for, it's meant to have fun with. It's not meant to be serious."
For the record, James said that the skit's account of what happened "was true, it was just exaggerated. It was really me kicking [Charlie's] ass more than him kicking mine."
Prince, whom Dave also portrayed in a Charlie Murphy retelling, said his segment was also exaggerated. He didn't challenge Murphy to a basketball game while wearing high heels and a purple suit. "That part's not true," Prince said about his game attire. "But the whupping's true."
Though Dave has heard from the Purple One, Lil Jon and Rick James, the comedian said there has been no communication between him and another famous mic controller who found himself the butt of a sketch: R. Kelly. During the skit, Dave sings a song as Kelly, talking about how much he wants to urinate on a girl — something that happens in the sex tape at the center of Kelly's legal woes.
"The thing about it is, I'm an R. Kelly fan, but it's basically a song about peeing on people," Chappelle said. " 'Pee on You' was a doozy. But it's one of those things that it's too funny not to do. You might have a moral dilemma like, 'Should I do it?' But like I said, it's in the spirit of comedy."
"Chappelle's Show" airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central, and with another season of original episodes in the can, Dave has hit the road. He's on a stand-up tour through July 3.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, who is producing the upcoming film "Constantine," directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Keanu Reeves, is reportedly in initial negotiations to obtain the rights to begin work on a Paramount film based on James' life.
James, 56, released his most recent studio album, Urban Rapsody, in 1997 and has been working on penning his memoirs for some time. (CNN) -- Singer Rick James, a musical icon of the 1980s who helped define the "punk funk" style of that decade, was found dead in his home Friday morning by his caretaker, a Los Angeles police Department spokesman said. He was 56.
James' personal physician signed his death certificate, and said his death was the result of "existing medical conditions," police spokesman Jason Lee said.
One of James' producers told CNN that the singer died of a heart attack.
"Today the world mourns a musician and performer of the funkiest kind," said Neil Portow, president of the Recording Academy, which is responsible for the Grammy Awards. "The 'Super Freak' will be missed."
James became an instant icon in 1981 with his album "Street Songs," a funk masterpiece that featured such hits as "Super Freak," "Give it To Me Baby," and "Fire and Desire."
"I'm trying to change the root of funk, trying to make it more progressive, more melodic and more lyrically structured," James once said.
"Street Songs" went triple-platinum and catapulted James into the forefront of the funk movement.
The album's gritty content earned James a bad boy reputation that he often had a tough time living down. Some critics said it led to his eventual involvement with drugs and a conviction for aggravated assault and false imprisonment in the 1990s.
James suffered a stroke after his release from prison in 1998, months after he had hip replacement surgery.
James was honored in June at the 17th annual Rhythm & Soul Awards. As he surveyed the smooth glass surface of the award, he said, "Years ago, I would have used this for something totally different. Cocaine is a hell of a drug."
In recent months, James had been working on a biography, Memoirs of a Super Freak. It was not immediately known if he completed the book before his death.
Born James Johnson Jr. in Buffalo, New York, James was the third of eight children of an autoworker and a former dancer.
At age 15 he joined the Naval Reserve, but he began missing weekend training when it interfered with his musical career.
James was reported AWOL, and he fled to Canada, where he continued his musical career. The charges came back to haunt him when his success brought him back to the United States, and eventually he served time.
After his release, James went to work with Motown Records, first as a songwriter, then as a singer and producer.
Despite his meteoric rise and recording success, James won only a single Grammy, for co-writing M.C. Hammer's monster hit "U Can't Touch This," a song sampled from James' "Super Freak."

It didn't end up exactly how I planned it initially because imagining something and actually doing something become two very different things. I've never been happier with something in my career. I have to write sketches and then perform them on television. It's the best job I've ever had in my life. I don't have to be Urkel or none of that crazy stuff.
BET.com: Do you write all the sketches?
Dave Chapelle: Me and one other dude. Me and a buddy of mine. Like some of the guys that have good shows, but if they're not writing it, then.... You know what I mean? But when it's just you and another dude, it's like it's no question. This is your stuff so, succeed or fail... it's you. If it fails you get all the blame, but if it succeeds you get all the glory, and I'd rather take the chance and get my due. I write stand-up, which ain't easy. You watch some guys that come to your town, do an act, and then come back next year with the same act. I come around every year. I have pretty much something different every year and then I'm writing 12 episodes of a show like this. That's a lot of comedy output. I'm sure when I do it, people ain't going to recognize the significance of this, but if my career goes further, people are going to look back and be like, "This guy was really putting it down." I'm a patient man.
BET.com: Is there a character you like doing the most?
Dave Chappelle: Man, I feel bad about saying it, but yes. See, the thing about the show is that it has this crazy spirit through it. It has some real irreverent things. Some of the things I draw comedy from are real painful things you know, but it's a certain delight in doing the characters because they all got certain feasibleness no matter how bad they are, that makes them more palatable. To answer your question, yes. One character I play named Tyrone. He makes me laugh. It's really like... I feel bad doing it sometimes, but it makes me laugh. I don't know if you've seen Tyrone Biggums.
BET.com: No, I haven't seen Tyrone. But I saw Clayton Bigsby.
Dave Chappelle: Yeah, Clayton is the blind White supremacist. Tyrone is the crackhead. I just always get a big kick out of him and then Clayton Bigsby of course. It's the kind of character that a Black dude would never play. For a Black dude to play this point of view, you have to think. You really got to stretch how you do something like that, and it's a hard thing to comment on if you're doing a show with a Black star. A Clayton Bigsby skit, as foul as it is man, it's so rooted with reality.
It's based off of my grandfather. If you saw him, you would think he was White. One thing that would let you know that he had any Black in him was the texture of his hair, and even that, what they call "good hair" at some points, but he looks like a White dude. He was born in a White hospital in 1909, which means what? His mother was White. Not his father because there was no way a Black woman under any circumstances can have a baby in a White hospital. The bottom line is, he looks like a White dude. But, in his mind, he's a Black guy. To make a long story short, it's 1968 and Martin Luther King was shot the day before. He's on the bus and people come up to him and start like, "Get off the bus you White motherf*@*%$" and all that stuff. They're like, "What you doin' on the bus?" and he didn't know they were talking to him. So, when he told me this story, I was like "oh sh*t! That's how I started on Clayton Bigsby.
We're in this holding pattern of political correctness, which is not going to get anything done for anybody, you know? I feel like if Black people really got mad at the show, like in my worst nightmare, where people started protesting or pulling a "Barbershop. . . ." If this is really our agenda then we are finished, man. We can't just be picking on things like this. There's a lot of serious things going on, and I just think that in a serious priority list of what Black people need to do, I don't think my show is a high risk. Otherwise I would try to justify each and every thing I did before I did it. I'd pre-think it out in my head. Is this justifiable? Is this a good service? I don't think I've done a good service to anybody by doing this show. You know who I test this show out on? My brother-in-law. He's a corrections officer so I take them tapes to him and those dudes love it. If anyone has a reason to get mad at anything, it's them (laughing)! If those dudes are cool with me and my moms and all is cool with me, then I'm at peace with myself. I don't feel bad. I know what my intentions are and I know what I'm saying. I hope people keep an open mind when they're watching it. That being said, a lot of people probably won't.
BET.com: How do you feel about having to explain guilt, if people don't get it?
Dave Chappelle: Uh... That's a damn good question. Sometimes it bothers me. Let's take the "Barbershop" thing for instance. Jesse Jackson did a lot of that hooting and hollering about it, and then it came out after the fact that he had not even seen the movie. One of the biggest rights Blacks had was that you might get a fair shake at entertainment. I obviously am on the bandwagon in this right. And then we have a Black movie that comes out as a crossover success, and the major critics of the movie are Blacks that haven't even seen the movie. To me I say this is a waste of time and it makes me question the motive of the people that raise these problems. I don't think that that scene belittled the Civil Rights Movement, and if something like this can belittle us, then it's like what are we standing on? What kind of shaky ground are we standing on? For instance, I can go to a White comedy club. I tell jokes about race, about White people, and they'll laugh. They don't sit there and go, "This is a goddamn outrage!" They don't do any of this stuff. Now if a Black person, if somebody goes to say 'you know you like chicken,' you'll flip out when secretly, you do like chicken. That doesn't make me feel less than a person. Why can't we (comedians) just be ourselves and do what we do? Don't let people kill your spirit...

Dave Chappelle: To be honest, I don't watch his show. That's not because of Cedric. I love Cedric. I think he's a good dude. I consider him a friend as far as show business goes. If we were in jail together, I'd fight for the motherf#$%@*. The reason why I don't watch the show is just because I don't want to be influenced by anything that they're doing. One of the points to establish the voice of the show is I want it to be a singular voice. I don't want a combination of 12 or how ever many people you staff the show with. You get two guys, and the voice comes through. It resonates more. It's a heavier workload, but in the long run I think you'd be happier.

The third season of "Chappelle's Show," originally scheduled to premiere in February, has been pushed back to March or April. The late launch for the Emmy-nominated Comedy Central hit has been traced back to its star's health problems.
According to the New York Post, Dave Chappelle has been suffering from the flu and borderline pneumonia.
"Dave -- and his entire production crew for that matter -- got a bit of a late start on writing season three," Tony Fox, the executive vice president of corporate communications at Comedy Central, tells the Post. "We're behind on the writing. He was recently sick for more than a week. There had been a built-in hiatus in the production schedule for the holidays."
Fox continues, "We had about 10 days of production left, so we pushed that through the end of the holiday break to give him some time to recover and get some writing time in. We'll resume production in January, so we're not exactly sure what that means in terms of launch date."
After acquiring some cult stature in its first installment, "Chappelle's Show" became a hit during its second season this January.

The terse announcement came just three weeks before the third season of the popular series was to return to the air, ending a year-long stretch of reruns.
"Comedy Central has suspended production on the third season of 'Chappelle's Show' until further notice," officials said in a written statement released late yesterday. "All parties are optimistic that production will resume in the near future. The third season will not premiere on May 31 as originally scheduled."
A Comedy Central spokesman would not comment beyond the statement.
Chappelle's publicist was equally tight- lipped about the stunning announcement.
Fans have already endured a lengthy absence by the acerbic, politically incorrect comedian. The last original episode of the Chappelle's no-holds-barred sketch show aired May 4, 2004.
"Chappelle's Show" has been a bright spot on the Comedy Central schedule. Last year, the network renewed the show for two seasons, an unusual move in the cable world. The lucrative deal, worth a reported $50 million - a figure downplayed by Comedy Central insiders, called for 10 episodes each for seasons three and four.
That package, according to Comedy Central sources, includes large bonuses for Chappelle if his ratings rise, as well as a percentage of future DVD sales. The show averaged about 3 million viewers an episode in its first two seasons.
If Chappelle does go back to work, he stands to make plenty from those DVD sales. The first season of "Chappelle's Show" sold 2 million copies, raking in $44 million in retail sales and making the boxed set the best selling comedy title in DVD history.
Production on the third season had been underway since the beginning of the year. Tapings in front of live audiences were scheduled for today and Saturday. But no episodes are ready for air.
Separately, earlier this week, Comedy Central announced a slew of new late night programs for the coming season, including programs hosted by Adam Carolla, D.L. Hughley and "The Daily Shows'" Stephen Colbert.

Two weeks after going AWOL from his Comedy Central show, comedian Dave Chappelle has finally spoken out about his flight to South Africa. Denying that he's in a mental health facility or that he is on drugs, Chappelle chalked his disappearance up to

a combination of stress, creative angst over the ideas for his show, and the fact that he's sometimes a "difficult dude."
Speaking to Time magazine, Chappelle said, "I'm not crazy; I'm not smoking crack." But a week after the third season of his "Chappelle's Show" was postponed indefinitely, Chappelle said he's definitely feeling intense pressure and needed to escape to get his head together.
"I'm definitely stressed out," Chappelle said, explaining why he abruptly left the taping of his show in late April to go on a "spiritual retreat" in South Africa without notifying his agent, publicist or fans.
"There were things that overwhelmed me," he said. "But not in the way that people are saying. I haven't spent any of the money. All that stuff about partying and taking crack is not true. Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To support my partying lifestyle?"
Chappelle said the pressure to live up to the unprecedented $50 million contract he signed with Comedy Central for two more seasons of the show has definitely led to some intense stress, which he felt he needed to escape from.
"Let me tell you the things I can do here which I can't at home: think, eat, sleep, laugh. I'm an introspective dude. I enjoy my own thoughts sometimes. And I've been doing a lot of thinking here," explained Chappelle, described as "lucid and thoughtful" during a 90-minute interview.
"You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice," Chappelle said. "So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone — stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes."
Two weeks ago — and just a day after Comedy Central began promoting the anticipated May 31 debut of the series' third season — the channel announced that production on the show had been unexpectedly postponed (see "Production On 'Chappelle's Show' Suspended"). At the time, Chappelle's spokesperson did not provide any other information, saying only that both sides expected to resume taping at some point.
Then, last week, Entertainment Weekly reported that Chappelle had checked into a mental health facility in South Africa (see "Dave Chappelle Reportedly In Mental Health Facility "). In his interview with Time, however, the comedian denied that report. "I'm not in a mental facility," Chappelle, 31, said. He also denied a drug problem, but said he had a 40-minute consultation with a psychiatrist.
"If you don't have the right people around you, and you're moving at a million miles an hour, you can lose yourself," Chappelle said. "Everyone around me says, 'You're a genius, you're great, that's your voice,' but I'm not sure that they're right. ... You got to be careful of the company you keep. It's hard to know how much to say. One of the things that happens when people make the leap from a certain amount of money to tens of millions of dollars is that the people around you dramatically change."
Though he'd heard other people talk about how fame can change you, Chappelle said he now knows firsthand how it not only changes your life, but also the lives of people around you. "You have to have people around you that you can trust and aren't just out for a meal ticket," he said.
Chappelle, who is staying with friends in Durban, South Africa, also chalked his flight up to dissatisfaction with the direction the show was going, saying, "I want to make sure I'm dancing and not shuffling. Whatever decisions I make right now I'm going to have to live with. Your soul is priceless." Because he felt the show's first two seasons had "a real spirit to them," Chappelle said he wants to make sure everything he does has a similar spirit.
Chappelle admitted that he's sometimes a "difficult kind of dude," and that when he left the show for the first time, in December, it was over similar "psychological" issues. Herzog — who said he recently finally saw a handful of the sketches Chappelle shot earlier this year which he thought were as funny as anything from the first two seasons — has told his staff that he doesn't believe the show will be back on the air in 2005.
"When I get back, [I hope] everything will be up and running, or we'll make other arrangements," said Chappelle, who did not give a timetable for when he might return to the U.S., or if he will return to producing the show when he does. "I don't know what the lay of the land is."
Chappelle said a number of prominent black entertainers have stepped up to offer advice — among them former Fugees singer Lauryn Hill — but it's the advice his father gave him when he decided to try comedy that has stuck in Chappelle's mind. "He said, 'Name your price before you get there. And if you ever find it's more expensive than what you're prepared to give, then get out.' "

Two weeks after going AWOL from his Comedy Central show, comedian Dave Chappelle has finally spoken out about his flight to South Africa. Denying that he's in a mental health facility or that he is on drugs, Chappelle chalked his disappearance up to

a combination of stress, creative angst over the ideas for his show, and the fact that he's sometimes a "difficult dude."
Speaking to Time magazine, Chappelle said, "I'm not crazy; I'm not smoking crack." But a week after the third season of his "Chappelle's Show" was postponed indefinitely, Chappelle said he's definitely feeling intense pressure and needed to escape to get his head together.
"I'm definitely stressed out," Chappelle said, explaining why he abruptly left the taping of his show in late April to go on a "spiritual retreat" in South Africa without notifying his agent, publicist or fans.
"There were things that overwhelmed me," he said. "But not in the way that people are saying. I haven't spent any of the money. All that stuff about partying and taking crack is not true. Why do I live on a farm in Ohio? To support my partying lifestyle?"
Chappelle said the pressure to live up to the unprecedented $50 million contract he signed with Comedy Central for two more seasons of the show has definitely led to some intense stress, which he felt he needed to escape from.
"Let me tell you the things I can do here which I can't at home: think, eat, sleep, laugh. I'm an introspective dude. I enjoy my own thoughts sometimes. And I've been doing a lot of thinking here," explained Chappelle, described as "lucid and thoughtful" during a 90-minute interview.
"You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice," Chappelle said. "So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone — stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes."
Two weeks ago — and just a day after Comedy Central began promoting the anticipated May 31 debut of the series' third season — the channel announced that production on the show had been unexpectedly postponed (see "Production On 'Chappelle's Show' Suspended"). At the time, Chappelle's spokesperson did not provide any other information, saying only that both sides expected to resume taping at some point.
Then, last week, Entertainment Weekly reported that Chappelle had checked into a mental health facility in South Africa (see "Dave Chappelle Reportedly In Mental Health Facility "). In his interview with Time, however, the comedian denied that report. "I'm not in a mental facility," Chappelle, 31, said. He also denied a drug problem, but said he had a 40-minute consultation with a psychiatrist.
"If you don't have the right people around you, and you're moving at a million miles an hour, you can lose yourself," Chappelle said. "Everyone around me says, 'You're a genius, you're great, that's your voice,' but I'm not sure that they're right. ... You got to be careful of the company you keep. It's hard to know how much to say. One of the things that happens when people make the leap from a certain amount of money to tens of millions of dollars is that the people around you dramatically change."
Though he'd heard other people talk about how fame can change you, Chappelle said he now knows firsthand how it not only changes your life, but also the lives of people around you. "You have to have people around you that you can trust and aren't just out for a meal ticket," he said.
Chappelle, who is staying with friends in Durban, South Africa, also chalked his flight up to dissatisfaction with the direction the show was going, saying, "I want to make sure I'm dancing and not shuffling. Whatever decisions I make right now I'm going to have to live with. Your soul is priceless." Because he felt the show's first two seasons had "a real spirit to them," Chappelle said he wants to make sure everything he does has a similar spirit.
