Potassium permanganate, KMnO4, is a purple crystalline compound with a metallic sheen. It is soluble in water, in acetone and in methanol, but it is decomposed by ethanol.
Potassium permanganate is prepared by fusing manganese dioxide with potassium hydroxide to form the potassium manganate and then electrolysing the manganate solution using iron electrodes at about 60 degC.
Potassium permanganate is widely used as a powerful oxidizing agent, as a disinfectant in a variety of applications, and as an analytical oxidant reagent in redox titrations.

Potassium Permanganate: Chameleon mineral. KMnO4; mol. wt. 158.03. K 24.74%, Mn 34.76%. Contains at least 99% KMnO4. Dark-purple or bronze-like, odorless crystals; sweet with astringent aftertaste; permanent in air. Decomposes about 240° with evolution of oxygen. d. 2.7. Soluble in 14.2 parts cold, 3.5 parts boil. water. Decomposed by alcohol and many other organic solvents, also by concentr. acids with liberation of oxygen; with HCl, chlorine is liberated. Readily decomposed by many reducing substances, such as ferrous salts, iodides, oxalates, etc., especially in the presence of an acid.
Incompat. Alcohol, arsenites, bromides, iodides, hydrochloric acid, charcoal; organic substances generally; ferrous or mercurous salts, hypophosphites, hyposulfites, sulfites, peroxides, oxalates.
Use: Bleaching resins, waxes, fats, oils, straw, cotton, silk and other fibers and chamois skins; dyeing wood brown; printing fabrics; washing CO2 in manuf. mineral waters; exterminating Oidium tuckeri; photography; tanning leathers; purifying water; with formaldehyde soln. to expel formaldehyde gas for disinfecting; as an important reagent in anal. and synthetic organic chemistry.
Grades available: Reagent, U.S.P., technical.
Med. Use: Astringent, antiseptic, and oxidizing agent in 1:100 to 1:10,000 solution.
Toxicity: Emesis, profuse salivation, rapid respiration, albuminuria.
Vet. Use: Antiseptic, deodorant in stomatitis, fetid ulcers, metritis, etc. Orally chemical antidote to alkaloid poisonings.
