Additionally, photos of a fire reportedly in the Sudzha area were shared online amid the air attack.

By morning, the acting governor of the region reported that air defense forces had allegedly shot down 26 drones in the Kursk region.

Explosions and drone attacks in the Kursk region
It is noted that in Russia's Kursk region, there are frequent complaints about aerial attacks using drones. These raids result in explosions and fires at various locations in the region.

For example, on the night of August 2, explosions occurred in Kursk, and the Russian side reported the activation of air defense systems in the region due to a drone attack.

At the end of July, it was reported that a fire broke out at a site in the Kursk district following a drone attack. The Ukrainian General Staff later stated that Ukrainian forces had struck a Russian ammunition and military equipment depot near Kursk.

On the night of July 28, explosions also occurred in the Kursk region due to a drone attack, and a fuel depot in the village of Polovaya caught fire. In 2017, a Cyprus-based offshore company called Pimodo invested 3 million euros ($3.25 million) in 10 residences at the five-star Salinas Sea Resort in the Atlantic Ocean archipelago nation of Cape Verde. The money for the investment was provided by the Russian agricultural-trading firm Agrotorg Tulsky, an affiliate of Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank), which the Russian government created in 2000 to support the agricultural sector.

Agrotorg Tulsky then purchased Pimodo itself in April 2018, meaning that the bank set up to develop Russian agriculture became the owner of luxury housing in a remote country known for its white sand beaches and as “an important transit hub for South American cocaine moving to Europe,” according to the U.S. government.

The Cape Verde resort purchase opens a window into an elite realm of Russia’s opaque leadership circles, Systema, RFE/RL’s Russian-language investigative unit, has found. And the brightest star in this particular constellation is Dmitry Patrushev, the 46-year-old Russian deputy prime minister who is the eldest son of presidential aide and former Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev. The younger Patrushev has been tabbed by experts as a leading candidate for a successor if President Vladimir Putin, 71, relinquishes power -- though there’s no sign he plans to anytime soon.

“The biggest plus” of Dmitry Patrushev as a potential successor “is his combination of silovik and civilian. Thanks to his father, the chekist corporation will perceive him, if not completely as ‘their own,’ then ‘socially close,’” wrote political consultant and former Putin speechwriter Abbas Gallyamov, using Russian terms that refer to senior officials with military or security backgrounds. “At the same time, most of society -- tired of militaristic rhetoric and the endless hunt for enemies -- won’t be frightened by his ‘epaulettes.’”

The main minuses for Patrushev, Gallyamov continued, are the scandals surrounding him and his unpalatable image as a “fortunate son.”

'New Nobility'
Nikolai Patrushev, 73, has known Putin since the 1970s and is one of the most trusted members of the president’s inner circle, as well as one of the most hawkish and anti-Western. A career KGB and Federal Security Service (FSB) officer, Patrushev succeeded Putin as FSB director when the ailing President Boris Yeltsin appointed Putin prime minister in August 1999, a quarter-century ago. Patrushev sent both his sons, Dmitry and Andrei, to the FSB Academy.

In 2000, Patrushev published a memorable article defending the “arrival in the highest echelons of power” of KGB stalwarts like himself and Putin and denouncing supposed attempts to “demonize” them as a threat to democracy. He described them as “strict pragmatists” selflessly guarding the country from enemies foreign and domestic.

They were, he asserted, Russia’s “new nobility.” Like traditional nobilities, this one is in some cases hereditary.

Dmitry Patrushev has made a dizzying career under Putin. At the age of 32, he became the chairman of Russian Agricultural Bank, Russia’s fourth-largest bank in term of net assets. At 40, he was named minister of agriculture, while this year, at 46, he was made deputy prime minister overseeing the agro-industrial complex, natural resources, and the environment. He regularly attends Kremlin meetings with Putin.

As might befit a member of the “new nobility” in Putin’s increasingly nationalistic, anti-Western, and isolated Russia, Patrushev does not spend the New Year’s holiday abroad, but rather with close friends and family at his vacation home a couple hundred kilometers north of Moscow in the Tver region, a source close to the Patrushev family who asked not to be named due to safety concerns told Systema.

The home is officially the property of Patrushev’s common-law wife, television personality Marina Artemyeva. Artemyeva is also the official owner of Patrushev’s estate outside of Moscow and two apartments in the elite Zolotoi residential complex near the Kremlin. According to Systema’s estimates, she officially owns property worth about $31 million.

Studying the history of the Tver region dacha, comparatively modest by the standards of other members of the Putin elite, enabled Systema to uncover a number of apparent insider deals and manipulations that led from that plot on the banks of the Volga River to Cape Verde, off Africa’s Atlantic coast. And all these deals were connected to Russian Agricultural Bank, which to this day remains within Patrushev’s purview.

None of the people mentioned in this story responded to Systema's requests for comments.

On The Volga
On November 21, 2022, Patrushev, then agriculture minister, hosted the opening of a poultry farm in the western Siberian Tyumen region. A video link connected governors and business representatives from the Moscow, Kaliningrad, and Kursk regions. Putin participated virtually from the Kremlin. One of the participants whom Putin lauded by name was Sergei Novikov, the owner of the agrobusiness Agropromkomplektatsiya.

Novikov, 64, started his empire on the foundation of a collective farm in the Tver region shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The company with the tongue-twisting name started out with 200 head of cattle and 2,000 hectares of land.

Today, the conglomerate raises some 40,000 cows and 1.3 million pigs on more than 100,000 hectares of land, an area about 17 times the size of Manhattan. It is one of Russia’s top three dairy producers and seventh in pork production. Its 2023 revenues came to about $1.9 billion.

In a 2020 interview, Novikov was explicit about the role Patrushev played in the meteoric growth of his company.

“We began working with Russian Agricultural Bank in 2006,” he said. “But the big breakthrough and serious development of our business began in 2010 with the arrival of the new team of D.N. Patrushev.”

Systema has calculated that during Patrushev’s time as chairman of the bank, from 2010 to 2018, it extended 35 billion rubles ($1 billion) in credits to Novikov’s company. A full 21.3 billion rubles ($609 million) of that total came in 2014 alone. The money helped the firm get through a serious outbreak of swine flu that swept a dozen Russian regions in 2013. Small farmers at the time accused the authorities of failing to help them and of colluding with major agrobusinesses instead.

In April 2013, about a year before Russian Agricultural Bank began doling out massive credits to Novikov’s group, the agrobusiness Korovinskoye left the holding. It was taken over by a businessman named Andrei Aleshkov, an old schoolmate of Dmitry Patrushev’s. In 2016, according to Novaya Gazeta Europe, Patrushev’s bank gave Aleshkov a loan of 1.89 billion rubles ($54 million) to build the Praim-Taim residential complex in Moscow.

There are other indications that Korovinskoye had come under Patrushev’s wing. The company’s new general director, Ivan Pleshakov, and its new phone number were both connected to a company called Trial, a supplier to the state’s emergency reserve fund, Rosreserv, which the investigative journalism website Proyekt tied to the Patrushevs in a 2023 investigation.

Korovinskoye, in addition to raising cattle, owned an idyllic swathe of land on the banks of the Volga in the Tver region, just north of Moscow. This is where Dmitry Patrushev’s vacation home now stands. Later in 2013, the trees had already been cleared from about 3 hectares of the land, an area a bit larger than Red Square. According to images captured on Google Earth, construction was under way in 2014.

By 2016, the work was nearly completed and, in addition to residences, one can identify outbuildings, lawns, a football field, a boat dock, and a swimming area. Around the same time, Korovinskoye began shedding other plots of land, most likely for far less than market value. In 2016, the firm recorded revenues of 11 million rubles ($160,000), while the land it sold was worth at least five times as much.

Two of the four plots were formally transferred to Novikov. However, a source close to the Patrushev family said the family regularly spent the New Year’s holidays there. In 2023, Novikov transferred the plots to the Patrushevs, according to documents examined by Systema.

The other two Korovinskoye plots were transferred to entrepreneur Andrei Sadovsky, who still owns them.

'Recreation And Sport'
The owner of the poultry plant that Putin and Patrushev opened in November 2022 was a man named Naum Babayev. His agrobusiness, Damate, is one of the world’s largest producers of turkeys and, according to the company’s website, Russian Agricultural Bank was instrumental to its growth.

Over the years, Patrushev’s bank handed Babayev’s companies more than 70 billion rubles ($1.2 billion). In addition, Babayev was repeatedly allowed to take over some of the bank’s distressed assets under attractive terms.

“It turned out that we became Russian Agricultural Bank’s janitor in the Penza region,” Babayev joked in a 2020 interview with the Russian Forbes magazine.

In 2020, the bank allowed Babayev to take over his bankrupted main competitor, a firm called Yevrodon.

Until 2018, the bank’s department on distressed assets was headed by Dmitry Sergeyev, an important figure in Patrushev’s inner circle. Sergeyev and Babayev have long-standing business ties, while Sergeyev’s wife and oldest son also have partnerships with Babayev.

Patrushev and Sergeyev have been acquainted at least since the mid-2000s, when they were both top managers at the state-controlled VTB Bank. Sergeyev became Patrushev’s deputy at VTB, his first deputy at Russian Agricultural Bank, and, later, a deputy minister at the Agriculture Ministry.

In 2019, Sergeyev was named head of the Unified Grain Company (OZK), which is a state agrocorporation that operates the country’s grain infrastructure and is controlled by the Agriculture Ministry. At least one Telegram channel has referred to Sergeyev as Patrushev’s “right hand.”

According to Systema’s source close to the Patrushev family, Dmitry Patrushev’s family sometimes vacations with Sergeyev’s, and Sergeyev has a vacation home not far from Patrushev’s. The man who took over the plots adjacent to Patrushev’s, Andrei Sadovsky, turned out to be Sergeyev’s brother-in-law.

In March 2023, the Tver region forestry authorities ordered the auction of a plot of forest adjacent to Patrushev’s land. Sergeyev won the auction at the starting price of about 209,000 rubles ($2,700) and won control of 2 hectares of forest for 49 years.

The forest has already been taken under control and cleared of many trees, according to images on Google Earth. According to the terms of the lease, the plot can be used for “recreation and sport.”

In 2018, Russian Agricultural Bank’s subsidiary took over the Cypriot offshore company Pimodo and its investment in the Cape Verde resort complex. Pimodo was represented by Montenegrin businessman Stela Kolman, according to the Cypriot corporate registry. Kolman had business connections through the Montenegrin firm Open Investment with former Russian Agricultural Bank manager Ivan Chepovoi. Chepovoi, in turn, was Sergeyev’s deputy at VTB Bank and worked under Sergeyev again in the distressed-assets section of Russian Agricultural Bank. Now, Chepovoi is Sergeyev’s deputy at OZK.

This arrangement lasted until 2022, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine and it became necessary to shield Russian assets abroad. Three weeks before the February 24 invasion, Pimodo was sold to another offshore shell company called Fiosal Ventures. According to the Cypriot corporate registry, Fiosal Ventures has indirect corporate ties with Novikov’s Agropromkomplektatsiya.

“Our best colleagues, the honor and pride of the FSB, don’t do their work for the sake of money,” Nikolai Patrushev claimed in his “new nobility” article in 2000. “They all look different, but there is one very special characteristic that unites all these people, and it is a very important quality: It is their sense of service.”

An explosion occurred at the Avangard military plant in the city of Sterlitamak, Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, which belongs to the Russian corporation Rostec, according to Russian media sources.

The incident occurred while a repair crew was dismantling a pipeline in one of the workshops. Three crew members were killed. The causes of the accident are under investigation.

The Russian Investigative Committee suggests that workers violated safety procedures during the cutting of pipes, causing a gas-air mixture to ignite, according to Radio Svoboda, citing other Russian media.

The Avangard plant is owned by the state corporation Rostec and manufactures weapons and components for multiple-launch rocket systems. The enterprise is under sanctions from the European Union, Switzerland, and Ukraine.

Explosions and incidents in Russia
In recent months, incidents of fires and explosions at defense and military enterprises, oil refineries, and oil depots have increased across various cities in Russia.

In mid-July, a drone attack caused a fire at the low-voltage apparatus plant in Korenevo, Kursk region.

At the end of July, Ukrainian special forces drones attacked an oil refinery and several Russian airfields, damaging a Tu-22M3 bomber.

With former President Donald J. Trump and his allies signaling that he will scale back assistance to Ukraine if he retakes the White House, a onetime close adviser has accepted a $50,000-a-month contract to lobby for Ukrainian interests.

Kellyanne Conway, who served as a top aide to Mr. Trump’s 2016 campaign and his presidency, registered on Friday to represent Victor Pinchuk, a Ukrainian oligarch who has positioned himself as a leading supporter of his country’s defense against Russian aggression.

In a filing with the Justice Department under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, Ms. Conway indicated that the Ukrainian government would be the “principal beneficiary” of her lobbying on behalf of Mr. Pinchuk’s charitable foundation.

The filing signaled that Ms. Conway would engage U.S. lawmakers and opinion leaders to explain the importance of Ukraine to the protection of democratic principles, and would try to raise awareness “of Ukrainians’ fight for freedom and the Russian illegal war of aggression.”

Ms. Conway also indicated that she would try to persuade American officials to attend the forthcoming installment of Mr. Pinchuk’s annual security conference, scheduled for next month in Kyiv.

Ms. Conway’s contract has drawn grumbling among other Trump allies, who complain that it represented an effort to capitalize on her connection to the former president, according to a former Trump White House official.

At the beginning of his presidency, Mr. Trump had required all incoming administration employees to pledge that they would refrain from any foreign representations that prompted FARA disclosure after leaving the government. But Mr. Trump rescinded the ethics pledge hours before the end of his term.

Mr. Pinchuk has long spent lavishly to curry influence in Washington and Kyiv.

He has made donations to the Clinton Foundation totaling at least $13 million since 2006. And he donated $150,000 to Mr. Trump’s now-defunct charitable foundation in September 2015 in exchange for a 20-minute remote video appearance that Mr. Trump made to Mr. Pinchuk’s security conference that year.

Mr. Pinchuk, who made his fortune in the steel industry after the fall of the Soviet Union, became a minor character in the special counsel’s investigation into connections between Mr. Trump’s team and Russia. Investigators scrutinized the payment.

Prosecutors also spotlighted Mr. Pinchuk’s role in financing a report commissioned by the Russia-aligned government of former President Viktor F. Yanukovych of Ukraine that was widely criticized for whitewashing the prosecution and imprisonment of an opposition figure. Mr. Pinchuk denied funding the report, though the U.S. consultants who facilitated it testified that he did so.

“On the night of August 6, 2024, the enemy fired four Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles at the Kyiv region from Russia’s Voronezh region, two Kh-59 guided missiles from the airspace over the Azov Sea, and 16 Shahed-type attack UAVs from Crimea’s Cape Chauda, Russia’s Kursk,” the report says.

Mobile firing groups of the Defense Forces, anti-aircraft missile troops and airborne EW units of the Air Force of Ukraine were engaged in repelling the air attack.

As a result of anti-aircraft combat, two Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, two Kh-59 guided missiles and 15 attack UAVs were shot down in the Kyiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Khmelnytskyi regions.

As reported by Ukrinform, on the night of August 6, the Ukrainian Navy destroyed three Shahed attack drones.

Russian Helicopter Sinks After Crashing in Mediterranean
A Russian Mi-8MT helicopter crashed and sank in the Mediterranean while working to extinguish a forest fire in Turkey, Russia's state-run media reported.

The helicopter, which was operating under Russia's Abakan Air, sank near the town of Adana in Turkey after crew members attempted to take water for firefighting work on August 2, a representative of the Moscow-based Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) told news agency Interfax.

Abakan Air performs domestic and international charter flights, providing aviation services in Russia and overseas, including search and rescue, medical flights and cargo charter flights, its website states.

Newsweek contacted Russia's defense ministry for comment by email.

A fire had broken out in a forest area in the town at about 3:45 p.m. local time, and the authorities called on two helicopters and water trucks to tackle the blaze, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) said.

"According to available information, while taking water for firefighting work, the aircraft collided with the water surface and sank. There were three crew members and two passengers on board; there were no casualties," the IAC spokesperson said.

According to AA, three of those on board the helicopter at the time of the crash were Russian nationals. All five were airlifted to hospital after they were rescued.

"Unfortunately, the helicopter was destroyed in an accident while taking in water. The five personnel in the helicopter survived, only the helicopter fell into the water," regional governor Yavuz Selim K�şger told the news agency.

Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli said in a statement that the helicopter crashed while taking water from the G�kdere Dam.

"Thank God, our five personnel working in the helicopter were rescued in good health," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "I wish our devoted crew a speedy recovery, and I would like to thank our Forestry Organization, which is fighting forest fires, and all our supporting institutions and their staff."

The U.S. sanctioned Russia's Abakan Air in June in response to President Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022. The sanctions package, which included more than 100 individuals and entities, was announced as G7 leaders prepared to meet in Italy.

The U.S. Department of State said the company that has performed domestic and international commercial charter freight flights has also "conducted arms deliveries on behalf of Russia's defense industrial base and transported other Russian military equipment."

"The United States will continue to use all tools at its disposal to disrupt support for Russia's military-industrial base and curtail Russia's ability to exploit the international financial system in furtherance of its war against Ukraine," the State Department said. "We continue to stand in solidarity with Ukrainians defending their homeland from Russia's aggression as well as with Russians striving for a more democratic future for their country."

What Russia’s arrest footage of Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan really tells us
Russia’s pro-Kremlin media know how to create an alternative reality, and last week’s historic prisoner swap was no exception.

On Monday, Russian state-backed media outlets treated viewers to lurid footage of the arrests of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan.

The locations of the videos are not in doubt: Gershkovich was arrested last year at the Bukowski Grill, a steak restaurant in the city of Yekaterinburg; Whelan was arrested at the Metropol Hotel, just across the road from the Bolshoi Theater in central Moscow.

But take nothing at face value from these heavily edited videos. Yes, we see Gershkovich being roughly detained and pushed to the ground. And we see a handcuffed Paul Whelan on a hotel bed, flanked by Russian security officers.

Yet despite the claims of the Russian-language voice-over, there is little here to support Moscow’s case that the two men were engaged in espionage – an allegation strenuously denied by the US government, the families of Whelan and Gershkovich, and their supporters.

What we see instead are classic examples of the Russian art of “black PR”: weaponizing the media to attack individuals and ruin reputations. The arrest videos are thin on information, but rich with insinuation as Gershkovich and Whelan are shown meeting with people before their arrests – suggesting through the power of B-movie imagery that the two men were engaged in some kind of skullduggery.

Russia has long used black PR and kompromat to make life difficult for foreign diplomats it wants to harass. In 2009, the US State Department kicked up a fuss about what it called a doctored video that surfaced on a Russian website that appeared to show a State Department employee having sex with a prostitute.

Russian state TV also loves to amplify a spy scandal: In January 2006, a state television channel aired footage that featured British spies planting a fake rock to conceal electronic equipment, a report clearly timed to embarrass the British government.

But in the cases of Gershkovich and Whelan, the aim of the Russian state was to build a bank of human collateral to trade for its valued agents held abroad. And for a domestic Russian audience, the now-released footage of their arrests is designed to send a message that Russia is infiltrated with foreign enemies – and that its powerful, all-seeing security state never ceases in its vigilance.

The most chilling feature of the videos is the suggestion of entrapment. In both arrests, the footage suggests that hidden cameras were in place and shooting from multiple angles, and that security forces had set up the situation to some extent.

In a statement, Wall Street Journal Publisher and Dow Jones CEO Almar Latour and Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker condemned the video of Gershkovich as a brazen attempt to frame a journalist who was legitimately doing his job.

Another top defense official in Russia will be removed from his post in part of an ongoing shake-up of the country's military establishment in Vladimir Putin's new presidential term.

This news was announced by the Foundation.

The Foundation’s specialists have already contracted, purchased, and even supplied some of the weapons to be used by the sniper teams formed under the “Pure Anger” project.

“In February, we jointly raised UAH 11,171,486 instead of the planned UAH 10 million. Accordingly, instead of 45 rifles for snipers of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, we purchased 50 units,” the Foundation said.

The ammunition of this caliber is characterized by good ballistics and high accuracy, allowing for hitting a tall target at a distance of 2000 meters with a deviation of less than 1 angular minute.

In total, under the project with a total budget of UAH 220 million, the Foundation plans to equip 25 sniper groups consisting of 4 shooters each. The equipment will be purchased for them:

• 100 .375 CheyTAC sniper rifles with daytime optics, thermal imaging pre-biased nozzle, bipod and silencer;
• 100,000 high-precision rounds of ammunition, which will last for 2 years;
• 50 specially prepared off-road vehicles;
• 50 laser rangefinders;
• 50 PVS14 night vision devices;
• 50 remote monitoring systems;
• 50 telescopes for observation and correction;
• 50 weather stations with a built-in Applied Ballistics calculator;
• 25 Labradar Doppler radars;
• 50 Mavic Thermal Pro quadcopters.

Militarnyi filmed a series of reports with the project developers and the military, in which they examined the sniper system and other equipment in detail.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has arrested nine suspected Russian agents who it says were planning to conduct missile, bomb and drone attacks in six regions of Ukraine.

According to the SBU, those detained are Ukrainian citizens who were recruited by an officer from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) to gather intelligence for assaults on Ukrainian military positions and critical infrastructure facilities.

“Following a multi-stage special operation, nine Russian agents were simultaneously detained in Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy, as well as in the Donetsk, Odesa and Kirovohrad regions. For conspiracy purposes, the suspects acted separately but were ‘attached to’ one FSB officer. His identity has already been established by the Security Service,” the SBU said in a statement.

The detainees include two city council members from the cities of Dnipro and Yuzhne, as well as two managers and a university student who were allegedly tasked with tracking Ukrainian military movements towards the eastern front.

Another suspected FSB collaborator was a former policeman who allegedly informed foreign services about the consequences of a Russian attack on a Ukrainian hydroelectric power plant.

According to the SBU, the detained individuals came to the attention of the FSB following their active participation in various pro-Kremlin Telegram channels.

After being recruited remotely, they communicated with their Russian handler through anonymous chatbots in Telegram.

They are currently in custody and face life imprisonment.

The Crimea based Atesh partisans have carried out more reconnaissance around Sevastopol during which they spotted two Black Sea Fleet Project 775 landing ships, one of which had previously been targeted by the Defense Forces and the other which previously belonged to Ukraine. The group reports that Russian forces have hidden their ships in bays among cranes and port infrastructure, hoping to save them.

“We have detected two Project 775 landing ships in Kilen Bay, one of which is the Konstantin Olshansky, stolen from Ukraine in 2014,” the partisans said in a statement published on Tuesday, August 6.

The photos released by Atesh clearly show two Russian landing ships at the pier, including the Konstantin Olshansky.

The partisans pointed out that half of the Black Sea Project 775 ships have already been destroyed by Ukrainian forces. “We have passed all collected information to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, and there is no doubt that soon more of the enemy's ships will sink,” they added.

Kilen Bay is located within Sevastopol Bay, about 4 kilometers (2,5 miles) from the main entrance, about 300 kilometers (187.5 miles) from Ukrainian territory. The Project 775 landing ships are able carry around 90 troops and are armed with a 75 mm dual-purpose naval gun, AK-176 artillery, AK-630 anti-aircraft guns, Grad MLRS, and Igla missile systems.

What’s happening
Following the massive shelling of the city of Sudzha in the Kursk region, Russians began reporting alleged attempts by Ukrainian forces to breach defenses on the morning of August 6. By the evening, local officials told Russian media that approximately 90% of residents had evacuated from four settlements in the Sudzha district.

On the same day, Russia decided to deploy reserves to the border area where Ukrainian forces were reportedly trying to break through.

According to HUR, this was not the first Ukrainian operation on Tendra Spit but "only a part of an ongoing broader plan of the Ukrainian Defense Forces."

Russian forces appear to have established a presence in the village. Earlier on Aug. 6, footage of what appears to be a soldier raising a Russian flag on top of a building in Niu-York emerged on social media.

The Ukrainian DeepState monitoring service geolocated the building as the Boarding School Number 38, located in the northwestern part of the village. The channel presented it as a signal of a "deteriorating tactical situation in the settlement and its loss in the near future."

Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov claimed the flag's footage as evidence that Niu-York fell to Russian hands. This was promptly denied by Andrii Kovalenko, the head of the counter-disinformation department at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council.

"As of now, Niu-York has not been taken by Russia. Heavy fighting continues there," Kovalenko said on Telegram.

DeepState's map points to steady Russian advances in the village but indicates certain parts are still held by Ukraine.

The Kyiv Independent could not verify all the claims.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) think-tank said on Aug. 5 that Russia had made "significant tactical advances in the Toretsk direction," pointing to geolocated footage of Russian forces in Druzhba east of Toretsk.

Russia also continues to press against other Donetsk Oblast towns, namely Chasiv Yar and Pokrovsk.

Military commanders also claim that Ukrainian troops are allegedly continuing to advance toward Suzha, and the town has been evacuated.

According to Readovka, at least 70 people were in temporary accommodation centers in the Kursk region by the evening. Russia says that the Ukrainian side “continues to pull up reserves”. They say that the large number of Ukrainian air defense systems complicates the work of the Russian air force.

The Rybar Telegram channel, close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, writes about the tense situation in the village of Oleshnya, where Russian troops are almost completely surrounded and have no advantage in numbers. The Russians also claim that Ukrainian forces are accumulated in Yunakivka.

NASA satellites have detected fires in the border areas of the Kursk region, where fighting may be taking place. The map below shows numerous outbreaks in the region over the past day, as recorded by Earth observation satellites.

Meanwhile, the number of requests for help in evacuating relatives from the settlements that have been left without communication is increasing in the local Telegram channels. Local authorities are calling for blood donations. The acting governor of the Kursk region, Alexei Smirnov, wrote on Telegram that “the region is resisting the attacks” and emergency services “have been switched to an enhanced mode of operation.”

Local authorities reported that “two missiles and four drones were shot down over the Kursk region” at night. In total, the missile threat was announced twice during the night. Russian Telegram channels reported that the number of people injured in the shelling had risen to 28.

Russians also reported about shelling in other regions. In Shebekino, Belgorod region, two drones hit an apartment building and started a fire. Two drones also attacked Voronezh, damaging the facade of a high-rise building and cars.

ISW: Russians report twisted versions of events
Analysts at the Institute for the Study of War have noticed different versions of the Russian Defense Ministry and local authorities on what is happening in the Kursk region. Smirnov and several Russian military commanders reported that “fighting continues” in the border areas of the Sudzhansky and Korenevsky districts of the Kursk region, contrary to the statements of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB, which claimed that the alleged breakthrough attempts had been repelled.

The Russian Ministry of Defense and the FSB claimed that yesterday “several raids carried out by the Armed Forces of Ukraine” equipped with tanks and armored vehicles of about a battalion size were allegedly repelled.

ISW notes that geolocation footage shows damaged and abandoned armored vehicles about 7 kilometers north of the international border west of Lyubimovka (Kursk region). While Russian sources claim that “the footage shows Ukrainian equipment,” ISW emphasizes that it cannot confirm or deny this.

Yesterday local authorities and Russian military commanders reported that units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces had allegedly broken through the border in the Kursk region, which borders the Sumy region. It happened amid a massive shelling of the town of Sudzha. Russian sources admit that the Russian army has already suffered losses, including manpower, equipment, and aircraft, as well as captured conscripts. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it was sending its reserves to the border in the Kursk region.

There were also explosions in the town of Kurchatov, near which the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is located. The local governor has already reported on two Ukrainian missiles that were allegedly shot down by air defense systems. However, eyewitnesses report hits on the infrastructure of the Kursk region.

Kuleba is visiting Zambia as part of his fourth African tour, during which he was planning on visiting Malawi, Zambia and Mauritius.

Reports of explosions at the warehouse, located between the villages of Shyroke and Leninske, appeared on August 6 at 5 p.m. The warehouse itself is located at coordinates 45�16’07″N 34�05’21″E.

The fire was not recorded on NASA’s fire monitoring service, which can be attributed to cloud cover.

A Moscow court has sentenced a Russian blogger Andrey Kurshin to six and a half years in prison for spreading “false information” about the Russian military on his popular Telegram news channel, independent news outlet Mediazona reported on Tuesday.

Kurshin, who founded the pro-army but war-critical Moscow Calling Telegram channel, was detained last August and placed under house arrest for posts he made about a Russian attack on a maternity ward in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region in November 2022, as well as for detailing a Russian strike on a residential building in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih in July 2023.

“This trial is like a scene from Harry Potter, when Umbridge forced him to write ‘I must not tell lies’ with his own blood,” Kurshin said in court.

Kurshin, who before running a Telegram channel fought in a pro-Russian militia in eastern Ukraine in 2014–2015, appears to have taken a more critical stance towards the Kremlin after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, reporting on Russian strikes on Ukraine, criticising official Defence Ministry statements, and often mocking staunch pro-war propagandists on his channel.

Despite his critical statements about the country’s military leadership, Kurshin appears to have supported the Russian army, and was publicly thanked by a popular military blog for sending first-aid kits to Russian servicemen in February 2023.

While most pro-war Russian bloggers welcomed his arrest, calling Kurshin a “malicious element”, others defended his right to “criticise the decisions” of the Kremlin and the Russian military command.

After Tuesday’s court hearing, Kurshin told reporters that he was “considering” returning to the front in Ukraine as part of a state-wide prisoner recruitment program, but, according to Mediazona, doubted that he’d be accepted, as “the command wouldn’t want to deal with such a controversial case”.

Reclaiming occupied Crimea through military means is easier than retaking occupied territories in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, according to Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense, during a conversation with graduates of the Kyiv School of Economics, as reported by Forbes.

In his opinion, retaking Crimea is "much easier" than Donbas, where the front line stretches 1000 km with a depth of over 200 km.

Budanov said that states that wanted to take Crimea always succeeded because "the isthmuses were not held and everything collapsed at once," adding that "the Crimean fortress is a myth."

The intelligence chief is confident that reclaiming the peninsula is possible by destroying communications from the Russian side and exerting pressure from mainland Ukraine, as Crimea would then be isolated.

"When I say we'll enter Crimea, we're already entering," he stated.

On August 6, special forces from the Artan active measures unit and the DIU Naval Center conducted an operation on the Tendra Spit in the temporarily occupied part of the Kherson Oblast. The distance from there to temporarily occupied Crimea is about 75 km in a straight line.

“If we’re talking about potential ethnic uprisings, we need a leader on the ground,” Budanov said. “We have a good candidate, but he’s currently building his capacity. Until then, we can’t speculate about anything. Nothing happens spontaneously; the Wagner mutiny was carefully planned in advance,” he added.

Regarding Yevgeny Prigozhin, the former head of Wagner, Budanov described him as a complex figure. Prigozhin reportedly intended to reach the Kremlin with the belief that he could save Russia.

“He wouldn’t save Russia; he would tear it apart. With him in the Kremlin and the nominal leadership elsewhere, the country would be irrevocably divided. He eventually halted his advance after speaking with Alexander Lukashenko,” Budanov explained.

In late January 2024, Budanov predicted the culmination of Russia’s offensive, which began in November 2023.
