"The Trust is working with other emergency services to respond to this incident and our Emergency Department is currently extremely busy," they said in a statement.

Merseyside Police said it had received "reports of a stabbing" and were called to a property on Hart Street in Southport at about 11:50 BST.

Armed police "detained a male and seized a knife" and the force said there was "no wider threat to the public".
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) said they had treated eight patients with stab injuries and some had been taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Others have been taken to Aintree University Hospital and Southport and Formby Hospital.
North West Ambulance Service added on X: "We have dispatched 13 ambulances along with specialised resources of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), Air Ambulance and Merit Doctors to the scene".

A woman who lives nearby told the Liverpool Echo she heard sirens and a helicopter circling at about 12:20 BST.
"Then the messages started to go around the local WhatsApp groups, saying 'lock your windows, lock your doors', we were told a man was running around stabbing people," she said.

"We are all absolutely terrified, panicking and sick with worry - everyone is trying to reach anyone they know in the area. I don't know how this can happen on a Monday lunchtime."

Daughter 'traumatised' by attack, father says
A local parent has said his daughter was "traumatised" by the attack.

The father said: "My daughter was in it and she was traumatised.

"She ran away and she's safe."

'Mothers screaming' as incident 'like a scene from a horror movie'
A local business owner, who was one of the people who called the police, has said the incident in Southport was like a "scene in a horror movie".

Colin Parry, owner of Masters Vehicle Body Repairs on Hart Street, said several people had been stabbed.

He told the PA news agency: "The mothers are coming here now and screaming. It is like a scene from a horror movie."

He went on to say "police have got him".

"It's like something from America, not like sunny Southport," he added.

Journalist Tim Johnson of Eye on Southport arrived at the scene about 20 minutes after the police had been called.

He says the incident happened at the Hope of Hart children's club, which is down a back street in a former warehouse building.

He says the victims were children, and describes one girl on a stretcher covered in blood.

"Her parents were running after her. It was horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it.

"There were so many police cars. It was a mass of blue lights.

"I saw ambulance men and women in tears. People were in tears in the streets."

Children's dance and yoga workshop was taking place nearby

A "Taylor Swift Yoga and Dance Workshop" aimed at primary school children between year two and year six was taking place near where the incident unfolded.

The organisers have been approached for comment but have not yet responded.

As we reported earlier, casualties were taken to a number of hospitals, including the Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

The stabbing in Southport took place at Hart Space, Sky News understands.

A statement from a business owner who uses the pregnancy care centre said news of what had happened had "shaken her to the core" and all she could think about was the families of those children and class leaders that were there today.

We reported earlier that a "Taylor Swift Yoga and Dance Workshop" aimed at children aged between primary school years two and six was was taking place near where the attack happened (see post at 3.21pm).

"We can confirm that a 17-year-old male from Banks, who was arrested in connection to the stabbing in Southport this morning, Monday 29 July, remains in police custody and will be questioned about the incident.
