The trio, who were arrested on Wednesday, are accused of surveilling a person from Ukraine and staking out a café in Frankfurt where their target was meant to be. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office did not reveal which country’s intelligence service the men were allegedly working for.
European governments and spy-catchers have grown increasingly concerned about an uptick of espionage in the bloc since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022. From France to Bulgaria, Russian snoops, often working under diplomatic cover, have been expelled en masse.
Last week, the foreign ministers of eight EU countries wrote to the bloc’s top diplomat asking that Russian diplomats and their families be restricted from moving freely in a bid to “significantly narrow operational space for Russian agents.”
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg also pledged to crack down on Russian spies, including imposing “tighter restrictions on Russian intelligence personnel across the alliance.”
The arrests in Frankfurt come days after Estonia sentenced a Russian university professor to six years imprisonment for spying for the Kremlin.

The radio interference affects the network of television satellites of the Luxembourg company SES, which is represented in Scandinavia by its subsidiary SES Sirius. Specifically, it appears to be the two satellites Astra 4A and SES-5, which are also often referred to as Sirius 4 and 5 and provide all of Central Europe with satellite television at the 5° East position. The exact nature and origin of the interference is not known at this time, but it appears that only northern Europe is affected. According to Bloomberg, the Swedes have asked for the interference to be put on the agenda of an ITU meeting that begins next Monday. This is likely to be an upcoming meeting of the ITU's Radio Regulations Board in Geneva , which is responsible for reports of radio interference. France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg have apparently also lodged complaints; a Kremlin spokesman has meanwhile told Bloomberg that they knew nothing about the problems.

He added: “We provoked this war. Of course it’s his fault, he’s used what we’ve done as an excuse.”

Patriot systems are important weapons that can shoot enemy rockets out of the sky. Ollongren stated that air defense is crucial to Ukraine, which has been able to resist many Russian attacks in this way.
She thinks it is "very good news" that Romania announced they would supply a Patriot system this week. The minister also added that the United States is also working on helping the Ukrainian war effort more. Last week, at talks in Brussels, another inventory was drawn up to help Ukraine with its air defense systems. The minister said, "All the pieces of the puzzle" were on the table.
In the past, the Netherlands has provided essential components for the Patriot system, like rockets and launchers. Ukraine has said that they need another seven Patriot systems. Germany has also pledged to supply more systems.
This does not bring the number of Patriot systems to seven, but Ollongren thinks every extension is welcome "because the Russians are continuing and even intensifying the air strikes." She would not share when the Patriot system is going to Ukraine because she did not want to give the Russian military any information.
