De NAVO neemt de leiding over het inzamelen van wapens en het trainen van Oekraïense militairen, verwacht NAVO-chef Jens Stoltenberg.
Dat vergemakkelijkt die assistentie en verzekert Oekraïne dat het ook op de lange duur op de NAVO kan blijven rekenen.

De westerse militaire alliantie was aanvankelijk huiverig om de coördinatie en planning van de hulp aan Oekraïne naar zich toe te trekken.

De NAVO liet dat liever aan de lidstaten over, om te voorkomen dat het bondgenootschap zelf in de oorlog zou worden meegetrokken. Maar dat is veranderd nu de nood van Oekraïne zo mogelijk nog hoger is geworden en de angst voor escalatie is afgenomen.

De defensieministers van de NAVO-landen zullen de plannen volgens Stoltenberg donderdag goedkeuren als ze bijeen zijn op het hoofdkwartier in Brussel.
