The Belgian government has announced a new financial aid package for the purchase of artillery shells to be sent to Ukraine.
A local media Le Soir reported on this.
During a conference held on February 28, 2024, Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder announced that her country would join a coalition to purchase artillery shells found by the Czech Republic in an unnamed country.
First of all, this financial package worth ¤200 million will allow Ukraine to receive about 50,000 artillery shells.
The procurement will be coordinated by the Czech Republic and funded by the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, and Denmark.
The announcement of the new financial assistance package followed a visit to Kyiv by Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
As previously reported, Czech President Petr Pavel, during a discussion at the Munich Security Conference, said that his country had found almost a million artillery shells outside of NATO.
According to the Czech President, the country’s representatives managed to find about 500,000 155-mm artillery shells and 300,000 122-mm shells abroad.
He added that they could be transported to Ukraine in a matter of weeks if funding is secured quickly.
In addition to artillery shells, the Czech Republic is searching for various weapons and equipment around the world that could potentially be transferred to Ukraine.
After that, some countries, such as Canada, began preparations to allocate appropriate financial packages for their purchase.
According to sources at the Ministry of Defense of Canada, the government is preparing to support a $30 million proposal for the purchase of these shells.

A group of Belarusian dissidents say they are planning a coup against the country’s authoritarian ruler Alexander Lukashenko, to be executed “at the right time.”
The partisan resistance group BYPOL — which operates from Poland — has been training officers and actively sabotaging the Kremlin in its war against Ukraine, all in preparation of a coup d’état against Minsk’s regime, one senior figure said publicly.
“We have worked out a plan and will put it into effect at the right time,” former Belarusian officer Aliaksandr Azarau told Belgian media outlet VRT.
According to Azarau, ensuring Russian President Vladimir Putin’s defeat in Ukraine is necessary to weaken Lukashenko’s regime.
“Without Putin, there is no Lukashenko,” he said. “If Ukraine can launch a successful offensive, Putin will no longer have time for Belarus.”
Azarau said the group has been committing acts of sabotage against Russia in efforts to assist Kyiv in the war, attacking Russian aircraft, damaging railways and training Belarusian volunteers fighting alongside Ukraine’s forces. In February 2023, the group claimed responsibility for a drone attack that severely damaged a Russian military aircraft near Minsk.
Azarau, a former Belarusian security services official, said he resigned from his job after “witnessing election fraud in the 2020 presidential election and the heavy-handed crackdown on the protests that followed.” He fled to Ukraine and eventually to Poland, from where he leads BYPOL.
On Feb. 15, a Belarusian court convicted Azarau in absentia along with five other former law enforcement officers for “inciting social hatred, plotting to seize power forcibly, and creating an extremist group.” Azarau received the harshest sentence — 25 years in prison and a hefty fine of around $123,500.
Lukashenko, who has ruled Belarus since 1994, recently confirmed he would run for president again in 2025.
A close ally of Putin, Lukashenko has stood by the Russian president — whom he considers an “elder brother” — throughout his full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He has allowed Putin to station tactical nuclear weapons on its territory.
Western states have condemned Belarus’ involvement in the war on Ukraine, with the European Parliament calling Lukashenko “an accomplice.”

De Franse president Emmanuel Macron heeft maandag op een top met Europese landen gezegd dat het wat hem betreft niet uitgesloten is om troepen naar Oekraïne te sturen. "We zullen alles doen wat nodig is om te voorkomen dat Rusland wint", aldus Macron. De Franse Buitenlandminister Stéphane Séjourné zegt dat het hierbij niet gaat om troepen die gaan vechten, maar bijvoorbeeld om te helpen bij het ruimen van mijnen en de productie van wapens in het land.
Verdeeldheid
Hoe denkt Nederland hierover? We vroegen het aan 2.063 deelnemers van het Hart van Nederland-Panel, representatief voor de Nederlandse bevolking. Daaruit blijkt dat bijna de helft van de deelnemers (44 procent) het goed zou vinden als er Nederlandse grondtroepen naar Oekraïne worden gestuurd.
Wel is die groep verdeeld over wat het takenpakket van de militairen daar zou moeten zijn. 15 procent zou erachter staan als zij daar ook aan gevechtsmissies meedoen. De andere groep (29 procent) denkt dat ze daar alleen ondersteunende functies moeten uitvoeren, zoals het ruimen van mijnen of evacueren van de bevolking als er gevochten gaat worden.
Verschillen bij stemmers van politieke partijen
Mensen die FVD stemden zijn met 96 procent het meest tegen het sturen van grondtroepen naar Oekraïne, gevolgd door stemmers van PVV (66 procent), BBB (59 procent), SGP (57 procent) en ChristenUnie (57 procent).
Meer progressieve partijen zijn juist in grote mate voorstander van het de optie om Nederlandse militairen naar Oekraïne te sturen. Zo is 63 procent van de Volt-stemmers daar voorstander van en 60 procent van de D66-stemmers, en is bij beide partijen ruim 23 procent van de stemmers zelfs voor een eventuele vechtmissie. 56 procent van de stemmers van GroenLinks-PvdA wil de optie tot het sturen van troepen openhouden, en houdt 16 procent ook de optie open tot het sturen van militairen om te vechten.
'Alle opties openhouden'
Veel Europese landen voelen echter weinig voor het sturen van troepen naar Oekraïne. Volgens de Nederlandse generaal Onno Eichelsheim is het "nu nog niet opportuun" om te praten over het sturen van militairen naar Oekraïne, maar moeten wel "alle opties" worden opengehouden om Oekraïne te steunen.
De meerderheid van het panel (49 procent) is ook tegen het sturen van troepen richting Oekraïne, zowel in een ondersteunende functie als om te mee te vechten. Een kleine groep van 8 procent heeft er geen mening over.

Ze betalen jaarlijks zeer binnenkort meer rente over hun schulden dan dat ze aan defensie uitgeven (3% van bbp). Over verspilling gesproken, bij defensie krijg je er nog wat voor terug. Een groot deel van die schulden moeten over niet al te lange tijd (ik dacht 2028) herfinancierd worden overigens. Dat gaat nog leuk worden, met hun achterlijke modern monetary theory.
