'Commandant Hezbollah gedood bij Isralische aanval'

In het zuiden van Libanon is een commandant van Hezbollah om het leven gekomen bij een Isralische aanval. Dat hebben verschillende bronnen aan persbureau Reuters bevestigd. Het gaat om Wissam al-Tawil, ook wel Jawad genoemd, van de speciale elite-eenheid Radwan.

Israeli authorities have opened an investigation into possible sexual crimes during the most deadly attack on Israel in its history.
“The growing body of evidence about reported sexual violence is particularly harrowing,” two UN-appointed independent experts say in a statement.
The statement referred to allegations of sexual torture including rape and gang rape as well as mutilations and gunshots to genital areas.
“These acts constitute gross violations of international law, amounting to war crimes which, given the number of victims and the extensive premeditation and planning of the attacks, may also qualify as crimes against humanity,” the experts say.
“Each and every victim deserves to be recognized, regardless of their ethnicity, religion or sex, and our role is to be their voice,” they add.
Israel has previously criticized the global body for not doing enough to address the issue.
The two experts on torture and on executions – Alice Jill Edwards and Morris Tidball-Binz – have raised the issue with Hamas, they say.

De VN heeft altijd al gezegd dat ze op plaats delict wilden zijn en zelf wilden onderzoeken om misdaden te kunnen vervolgen. Hopelijk krijgen ze alsnog toegang om recht te doen aan hen die onterecht is overkomen.

Sinds het uitbreken van de Gaza-oorlog maakt Isral vaker dan ooit gebruik van zogeheten ‘administratieve detentie’ om Palestijnen op de bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever op te pakken. „Gedetineerden hebben geen enkele manier om te weten waarvan ze worden beschuldigd.”
Mohamed, Ahmad en Moataz al-Salaymeh, neven van elkaar, lopen na hun vrijlating uit administratieve detentie door hun wijk in Oost-Jeruzalem.
Het is vroeg in de ochtend in Damon, een gevangenis op de Karmelberg boven de stad Haifa in het noorden van Isral. Een Isralische afdelingsbewaker komt de cel binnen van Raghad al-Fani (25) en vertelt haar dat ze moet meekomen. Al-Fani en haar celgenoten weten meteen dat ze vrijkomt. Al dagen gonsden er geruchten over een aanstaande gevangenenruil.
Dertien maanden zat Al-Fani in administratieve detentie. Tot ze afgelopen 24 november samen met 38 anderen werd vrijgelaten tijdens de eerste gevangenenruil: Isral laat Palestijnse gevangen vrij, militante organisatie Hamas gegijzelde Isralirs. Na een lange reis in een auto van het Rode Kruis, met een tussenstop in de Ofer-gevangenis op de Westelijke Jordaanoever, is ze dan ineens weer thuis.
„De dag dat we naar huis mochten was het moeilijkst. Vanaf het moment dat we de cel uitgingen werden we geboeid en hardhandig meegetrokken. We zijn in ons ondergoed genspecteerd. Voordat we werden overgedragen aan het Rode Kruis volgde nog een gesprek met de inlichtingendiensten. Daar kregen we de waarschuwing dat we zo weer opgepakt zouden kunnen worden.”
Een maand later zit ze op de bank in haar ouderlijk huis in Tulkarm, een stad op de door Isral bezette Westelijke Jordaanoever. Op haar telefoon laat Al-Fani filmpjes zien van haar terugkeer in Tulkarm, gemaakt door lokale Arabische nieuwszenders. Op de video’s oogt ze blij en overdonderd door het weerzien met familie en vrienden, de aanwezigheid van zoveel camera’s om zich heen. Ze vindt het moeilijk dat haar medegevangenen nog vast zitten, zegt ze in een interview.

Two Palestinian doctors and a nurse from the West Bank were identified Monday as the suspects in a deadly shooting the day before that killed an East Jerusalem Palestinian man and seriously injured a woman.
Officers in the police’s Yamam counterterrorism unit arrested the three suspects overnight, security officials said Monday.
In a joint statement, the police, Shin Bet, and Israel Defense Forces said the trio were detained some 15 hours after the attack on Route 465, near the West Bank settlement of Ateret.

Hebrew media, citing Palestinian reports, identified them as Issar Barghouti, an anesthesiologist from Bayt Rima near Ramallah, Khaled al-Harouf, also a medical doctor, and Morid al-Atar from ‘Atara, who worked as a nurse.
Israeli security officials are still assessing that the shooting was carried out with nationalist motives, meaning it is considered a terror attack, the Ynet outlet reported.
Officials said the three “implicated themselves” in the attack in preliminary interrogation. They were handed over for interrogation to the Shin Bet security service.
Amar Mansour, a 33-year-old resident and father of two from the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina, was killed in the Sunday shooting.
A 42-year-old woman, a pharmacist at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Medical Center, was seriously injured in the attack after attending a Christmas celebration in Ramallah and was taken to a hospital in the city by passing Palestinian medics.
She was then transferred to Hadassah, where she underwent treatment for injuries to her neck and face, the hospital said in a statement.
The shooting appeared to be the first deadly terror attack in the West Bank since November, though there have been several attempted attacks in that period. On December 31, two guards were injured in a stabbing at the entrance to the Mishor Adumim industrial zone, during which the assailant managed to grab a semi-automatic rifle.
It was also the latest of a series of incidents outside the northern quadrant of the West Bank, where much of the violence has been concentrated in recent years. Army raids have largely focused on Jenin, Nablus and Tulkarem, where they have attempted to uproot terror movements that had gained footholds.

Two Palestinian doctors and a nurse from the West Bank were identified Monday as the suspects in a deadly shooting the day before that killed an East Jerusalem Palestinian man and seriously injured a woman.
Officers in the police’s Yamam counterterrorism unit arrested the three suspects overnight, security officials said Monday.
In a joint statement, the police, Shin Bet, and Israel Defense Forces said the trio were detained some 15 hours after the attack on Route 465, near the West Bank settlement of Ateret.
