Access for Grindavík residents - 15 November - details
The Police Commissioner in Suðurnes has decided the following regarding residents' access to Grindavík today, November 15.
Access is granted exclusively to residents who have not yet entered the area - and who have been contacted (work to contact relevant individuals is still ongoing). Do not show up if you have not been contacted.
There are two designated entry points for Grindavík residents today:
Via Suðurstrandarvegur from the east to Grindavík to the meeting point: Detailed instructions will be provided at the meeting point, which is the parking lot at the Fagradalsfjall [previous] eruption site. Residents permitted to enter Grindavík should gather at this location. This approach is applicable to residents of the following streets: Efrahóp, Austhóp, Miðhóp, Víðgerði, Austurvegur, Hópsvegur, Hópsbraut, Lóuhlíð, Mávahlíð, Spóahlíð, Fálkahlíð, Brattahlíð, Austurvegur, and the entire Þórkötlustaðahverfi.
Via Grindavíkurvegur: Note that this access route is exclusively intended for residents on selected streets in the northwestern part of Grindavík. Residents on these streets will be contacted and provided with specific timing and instructions related to the project. Residents will be transported in rescue vehicles from the collection point at Grindavíkurvegur to their homes in Grindavík and back.
Note for residents:
Don't go unless necessary.
Only one person per household will be allowed to enter the area.
Make a list of items you plan to pick up before leaving.
Remember to bring the house key.
Bring a cage for pets if needed.
Take a bag or other belongings with you.
Residents will have a short time inside the home.
Those who go must not have an anaphylactic reaction to animals because there will be pets with them on the way back.
This is only for retrieving very important items, such as pets, vital medicines, possibly passports, or other household essentials.
There is a risk involved, so it is crucial that everyone involved carefully follows all instructions from the police directing this operation and respects the time limit.
The plan is subject to change without notice, but it will be a carefully planned and controlled operation under the direction of the police. Permission to enter the town is a significant responsibility, and not a trivial decision. It does not imply that the area is otherwise open to regular traffic.
