What are the implications of Hamas claiming to have fired 5,000 rockets against Israel?
The situation in Israel is very complicated.
This morning, the massive rocket fire was a cover for the infiltration of Hamas militants into the territory of Israel.
After the announcement of air alerts, when the military descended into the shelter, Hamas militants began infiltrating Israeli territory.
Via underground tunnels, on the ground, cracks were created everywhere in the defense system.
Hamas militants were entering by water, under water and even on hang gliders from the air.
Then Hamas began taking hostages and killing civilians. The goal was to create panic and hold buildings using civilians as hostages. Hamas militants understand that having hostages prevents a counter-attack with heavy equipment or a hard assault.
In Israel, life of every citizen is valued, so Hamas militants use it for their security.
Today is Shabbat, which means there are many people at home. Additionally, the Israeli protocol dictates that when the rocket fire starts, everyone must hide in specially equipped rooms or shelters. This made it possible for Hamas militants to enter Israel almost unnoticed and buy time.
The capture of a small military base, where everyone went into hiding, gave the Hamas attackers an opportunity to obtain the uniforms and weapons of the Israeli army. They changed clothes and swapped their Kalashnikovs to M-16s, now it is difficult to distinguish them from the Israeli military. The exact number of Hamas militants on the territory of Israel is not known.
It is also known that a number of Israeli soldiers and civilians were captured and taken to Gaza. This also limits the capabilities of the Israeli military for a major operation. Hamas militants will publicly execute Israelis to stop such an operation.
