quote:Accused Colorado mass shooter Anderson Lee Aldrich changed his name as a teen to protect himself from his dad’s “criminal history” — a move that largely hid the kid’s own troubled past till now.
Aldrich was known by his birth name Nicholas Franklin Brink until age 15, when he petitioned a Texas court for the moniker switch under the guidance of his grandparents, who were his legal guardians at the time, reveal records obtained by the Washington Post.
Anderson, now 22, wanted to change his name “to protect himself and his future from any connections to birth father (sic) and his criminal history,” the 2016 filing said, according to the Denver Post.
“Father has had no contact with (Aldrich) for several years,” the court document says.
It’s not clear why Aldrich picked the new name he did. A relative who asked to remain anonymous told the Denver Gazette that the suspect liked the initials A.L.A., but it’s unclear why.
The change — which was signed off by Aldrich’s dad, Aaron Brink, and mom, Laura Voepel — was granted by Aldrich’s 16th birthday a few weeks later. Aldrich’s parents were divorced in 2001.
A man named Aaron Franklin Brink has a lengthy arrest record spanning across several states, the Denver outlet said.
As for his son, as a kid, Aldrich moved around between Orange, Calif., and San Antonio, Texas, before settling in Colorado, records show.
He remains a registered member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which until 2019 described people in same-sex marriages as “apostates,” someone who’s abandoned religion.
His mom — the daughter of Republican Randy Voepel, who compared the Jan. 6 Capitol attack to the Revolutionary War — has had several brushes with the law herself, including an arrest for arson in Texas in 2012, when her son was 12, the outlet noted. She also appears to have three outstanding warrants from earlier in California, according to the Gazette.
A YouTube channel under Aldrich’s original name, Nick Brink, was started in 2010, when he would have been 10, the Washington Post said.
It has 416 subscribers despite appearing to have only posted one video two years later — a profanity-laden, offensive cartoon titled, “Asian homosexual gets molested by floating piece of f—le.” It mainly features characters dropping f-bombs.
When he was 15, Brink became a target of what the DC outlet described as “a particularly vicious bout of online bullying.”
A Wikipedia-like website was created with his name, photos and online aliases, along with a fictitious biography riddled with insults and ridicule, the paper said, without identifying the site.
It was not clear why he was targeted. He would soon legally change his name to the one he was arrested under for allegedly shooting dead five people and injuring 18 others in Club Q in Colorado Springs late Saturday.
His grandparents appear to have been central to his own disturbing previous arrest in June last year when he livestreamed a four-hour standoff with police after being accused of threatening to blow up his neighborhood.
Relatives told the Gazette that Aldrich flipped after finding out that his grandparents planned to leave Colorado and settle in Florida.
In a livestream of the standoff — in which he threatened to “blow it to holy hell” — he also said, “This is the day I die. They don’t give a f–k about me anymore. Clearly,” the local outlet noted.
He was charged with kidnapping and felony menacing, but was never prosecuted. The records in the case have also been sealed.
The arrest also does not appear to have triggered the state’s red flag laws, with Aldrich allegedly using an AR-15-style rifle in Saturday’s carnage, with other weapons and ammo on him.
Officials have repeatedly declined to say how — or when — Aldrich obtained his arsenal, and the affidavits in his case have all been sealed.
However, El Paso County appears hostile to using the law, and in 2019 passed a resolution that says the red flag law “infringes upon the inalienable rights of law-abiding citizens” by ordering police to “forcibly enter premises and seize a citizen’s property with no evidence of a crime.”
Mayor John Suthers said Monday that “we don’t know” whether the gun law would have applied in the case and possibly prevented the attack.
“Hopefully there will be a time when there can be a specific discussion about any prior interaction with law enforcement” and the decision on red flag laws, he told the Washington Post.
Colorado state Rep. Tom Sullivan, whose son was killed in the Aurora theater shooting and sponsored the state’s red flag law, said Anderson’s 2021 case “should have alerted them, put him on their radar.”
“We need heroes beforehand — parents, co-workers, friends who are seeing someone go down this path,” Sullivan said of the need to flag troubled gun owners.
Duke University sociologist Jeffrey Swanson, an expert in red flag laws, said the Colorado Springs case could be yet another missed warning sign.
“This seems like a no-brainer, if the mom knew he had guns,” Swanson said. “If you removed firearms from the situation, you could have had a different ending to the story.”
Aldrich remained in a local hospital after having been attacked by two heroic club-goers who fought back and bashed him with his own weapon. Authorities have not discussed his condition.
While confirming that the suspected mass shooter is a member, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints condemned the shooting.
“The senseless act of violence in Colorado Springs is of great sadness and concern to us,” the church told the Washington Post.
“We are greatly troubled by any violence in our communities and condemn most especially violent acts that are the result of intolerance against any of God’s children.”

Ok.

https://www.audible.co.uk(...)YWE82TV5FRQHGS6306N1quote:Breaking Justice is a narrative documentary series that covers an unfolding current criminal case that has exploded into the public consciousness.
Sports journalist Jenn Brown and former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes host the series and guide the listener through the complicated criminal cases of two men whose stories interlock. Harry Goularte, Jr., was accused of sexually abusing the four-year-old son of former MMA World Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez over a period of months at a day care in San Jose, California owned by Goularte’s mother.
Goularte was arrested but let out on bond almost immediately, with no notice to the Velasquez family. Cain Velasquez found out Goularte was released and pursued Goularte by car in what appears to be an act of vigilante justice. He shot at the vehicle Goularte was in and forced it off the road.
Goularte’s stepfather was the only wounded, and Velasquez was arrested. But unlike Goularte, Velasquez was denied bond.
Jenn and Francey cover these two cases as they unfold, with inside access to Velasquez (in an interview from his jail cell), his family, and his closest friends, who walk us through the events that led up to his shocking vigilante-style attack.
Jenn and Francey also get experts’ perspectives on brain injuries, vigilantism, and California justice, and even record the first-hand perspective of an abuse survivor whose father killed the abuser on live television.

quote:Harry Goularte is free to change his California residence – and had another major change to his court-ordered bail requirements, a judge ruled Friday.
Goularte, who is accused of child molestation and who was the target of an alleged shooting by former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, can change his residence to a different county. He also will be allowed to be around minors during the holiday season – provided the minors are family members, and provided other adults are present.
Goularte previously was not permitted to be around any minors, period, as one of the terms of his bail following a court agreement earlier this year. He remains out on bail under court supervision and GPS monitoring in Santa Clara (Calif.) County, and has been allowed to work a construction job while awaiting trial.
His representative said the court’s pre-trial services department is aware of Goularte’s upcoming plan for a change of residence and no issues were present for Goularte to continue to be supervised. His new address will remain sealed and confidential.
A judge Friday agreed to modified terms of his bail to allow the move and for him to be in family settings with minors present during the holidays.
Goularte pleaded not guilty this past June to one criminal charge of lewd acts with a minor, alleged to be Velasquez’s son, then 4. He has a pre-trial hearing set for Jan. 17.
If found guilty, Harry Goularte could face up to eight years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
Velasquez currently is out on $1 million bail. He faces a handful of charges, including attempted murder, after he allegedly followed and shot at Goularte in a high-speed car chase and struck Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, with a bullet.
Velasquez, not long after being granted bail after months in jail and multiple attempts by his legal team for him to be released, was allowed to go to Arizona to perform in a Lucha Libre wrestling match. He was due to travel Thursday for the Saturday event and is scheduled to return to California on Sunday. He has a pre-trial hearing set for Dec. 28.
