Civil Defence: we will know tomorrow if more can return
Víðir Reynisson, director of Civil Defence, says that it will be clear tomorrow whether more residents of Grindavík will be allowed to enter the danger zone, after a small group of residents in Þorkätlustäðar district were allowed to briefly return today.
"There is an assessment that will be done in the morning. Hopefully it will be possible to allow a little more tomorrow. We will start looking it in the morning when we receive a new risk assessment," says Víðir.
He says that today went well and that the responders got a feel for how large a group of residents can be let in at once.
Hot water out in parts of Grindavík after damage
Utility agency HS Veitur's distribution system is damaged after the earthquake.
There is no hot water in part of Grindavík and it is likely that there are quite a few leaks in other parts of the system. There is also no electricity in some places.
"HS Veitur always prioritises the safety of its employees, and the company works closely with Civil Defence to assess if and when it will be possible to start repairs.
"It must be considered unlikely as the situation is that it will happen anytime soon, as such repairs require a considerable amount of personnel and equipment and can take a long time," says the company.
