Van vrijdag 15 juli tot en met zondag 24 juli wordt in Eugene, Oregon het achttiende WK atletiek gehouden. De wereldkampioenschappen hadden eigenlijk afgelopen jaar al gehouden moeten worden, maar vanwege corona schoof de internationale sportkalender bijna alles een jaar door. Dat gold ook voor het WK atletiek, waardoor we nu voor het eerst in in de historie een WK krijgen in een even jaar. Drie jaar na het WK in Doha en slechts één jaar voor het WK in Budapest. Vanaf volgend jaar keren we dus weer terug in de reguliere cyclus.
In de komende periode zijn er maar liefst 49 wereldtitels te verdelen. 24 bij de mannen, 24 bij de vrouwen en de mixed-estafette maakt de boel compleet. Dit gaat gebeuren op het Hayward Field. Dit stadion van de universiteit van Oregon in Eugene is al jaren het atletiekmekka van de Verenigde Staten. Het stadion is recentelijke gerenoveerd en biedt tijdens het WK plaats aan circa 30.000 toeschouwers. Jaarlijks wordt hier door voornamelijk Amerikaanse atleten de ene na de andere topprestatie neergezet. Laten we hopen dat dit gedurende de wereldkampioenschappen wordt doorgetrokken door alle atleten.
Een nadeel van een WK in de Verenigde Staten en nog meer precies in Oregon aan de westkust is het tijdsverschil. De Amerikanen lopen negen uur op ons achter, dus voor elk onderdeel mag er negen uur worden opgeteld bij de officiële starttijd. Dat betekent dat we diep in de nacht gaan voor het avondprogramma. Terugkijken in de ochtend is natuurlijk ook een optie, maar live blijft toch het leukst. In de spoiler is het programma per dag te zien. Buiten de lange duurnummers komt het er globaal op nummer dat het ochtendprogramma onze tijd tussen 19.00 en 23.00 uur gehouden wordt en het avondprogramma tussen 02.00 en 05.00 uur, pittig.

TeamNL reist met 36 atleten af naar de Verenigde Staten. De meeste aandacht gaat logischerwijs uit naar Femke Bol, zij is dominant in Europa, maar krijgt hier tegenstand van de nog sterkere Sydney McLaughlin, de Olympisch kampioene. Van Sifan Hassan hebben we de afgelopen maanden weinig gehoord, maar zij heeft afgelopen weekend haar rentree gemaakt en is van plan om op twee nummers deel te nemen. Ook de 400meter estafettes en de zevenkamp bieden kansen op medailles. De NOS heeft de uitzendrechten voor het WK. De NOS heeft echter een waardeloze service, dus of daar alles te volgen is (en zeker terug te kijken) is maar zeer de vraag. De VRT zendt veel uit op Ketnet, terwijl de BBC het zo te zien verdeelt over BBC 1 en BBC 3. Het is dus wat puzzelen om het een en ander te kunnen zien en terug te kijken. Helaas geen rechten voor Eurosport/Discovery, dus van de PLAYER kan geen gebruik gemaakt worden. Tips voor het integraal terugkijken worden gewaardeerd.
