A: Ja. 6 maart is hij in ons land en speelt hij samen met de italiaanse band Zu In tivoli oude gracht in Utrecht

Q: Wat is dat Ipecac Recordings
A: Dat is een label opgericht door Mike Patton & greg wreckman en is thuis voor de meest uiteenlopende bands van de post-hardcore van Isis tot de dub van dub trio tot rauwe hip-hop van dälek en zelf pop van immani coppola en northern state hebben hier albums gereleased. Het label gaat contracten aan per cd en is dus ideaal voor one-off projecten.

“During the Disco Volante writing sessions in a place we called The Shotwell Bomb Factory, San Francisco, we were blessed with an isolated & independent place to record and rehearse,” explains Trevor Dunn. “Endless days and nights were spent in there experimenting, improvising and piecing together what would be our ‘sophomore attempt’ among other gems. Often there was an ADAT machine ready to go for any spontaneous outbursts (think ‘Nothing’ from the end of Disco Volante), but we tested out various setups at our disposal.”

Trey Spruance, who often engineered these chaotic recordings, recalls: “I remember wanting to enhance audio separation and isolation to an extreme, using a kind of ‘musique concrète live mix’ approach, hoping that would capture the unruly individual spirits of our improvisation more faithfully. It totally did in this case; facilitated better communication than usual.”

Dunn continues, “Patton and Heifetz were in the ‘sound room’ with a multitude of instruments within reach. Trey and I were in the ‘control room’ with keyboards and outboard gear, as well as total ‘knob control.’

What we offer here is one of several ‘movements’ from a spontaneous sound narrative that spans over an hour. Up until now, no one but the four of us have heard this recently unarchived weirdness.”

Dave Lombardo needs no introduction. His reputation as a drum innovator and musical bellwether is unsurpassed. Whether it was his decades-long tenure with thrash metal titans Slayer, his four-album stint with influential experimentalists Fantômas, or his work with prestigious composer/saxophonist John Zorn, Lombardo’s passion for, and spiritual connection to, sound transcends all boundaries. His long-awaited solo album Rites of Percussion is instinctual and cinematic. It’s not entirely a drum album, but it’s a drum album, the culmination of Lombardo’s experience, ambition, and tenacity.


“[Mike] Patton originally gave me the idea as far back as 1998,” explains Lombardo. “He introduced me to Tito Puente’s Top Percussion album. I was already familiar with Tito and was a bit shocked that Patton was so musically diverse, and that he surrounded himself with musicians of the same mindset. That inspired me. I have had ideas that I’ve recorded on cassette over the years, but Patton kept insisting that I had to do a ‘drum album.’ So, the idea behind the album is years in the making. I just had to find the right time—for me—to do it.”


“When the pandemic hit, I thought, ‘Well, I can’t tour now,’“ he says. “I immediately started working on the record. It was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. I had my studio, all my drums. Nothing was in storage for once! My home became a place where I could be free and creative. On the one hand, the touring part of my livelihood had been taken away, but on the other, I finally had the time to educate myself on different software and recording techniques. It was a very educational and gratifying experience.”


Throughout Lombardo’s 40-year career, he’s been foundational to, performed with, and been respected by artists from all walks of musical life.
