Vooral het laatste punt is iets wat je zou kunnen weten als je die had gelezen, het eerste is natuurlijk meer specifiek kennis op Belarus gericht, het tweede is gewoon deel van het plan dat betrekking had op de vernietiging en verdrijving van Slavsiche volken om "Lebensraum im Osten" te creeeren. Gebrek aan kennis daarvan is kenmerkend voor gebrek aan kennis van Oost-Europese geschiedenis in het algemeen. Als ik een relevant geschiedenisboek binnen handbereik had liggen, had ik de moeite wel gedaan om het een en ander op te zoeken en als bron aan te dragen. Als ik nu in Minsk was geweest had ik zelfs in de Nationale Bibliotheek kunnen gaan zoeken naar de oorsprongkelijke publicaties van Arsiennieva in fascistische blaadjes. Helaas zijn de laatste 2 mogelijkheden niet van toepassing. Daarnaast besteed ik mijn tijd liever aan het bestuderen van nieuws (zeker nu het sneller binnenstroomt dan dat ik het kan volgen), dan aan materiaal voor te kauwen aan iemand die klaarblijkelijk te lui is om zelf onderzoek te doen.quote:

Voordat ik de vorige reactie typte heb ik 26 minuten gekeken naar een interview tussen Konstantin Eggert van de Russischtalige redactie van Deutsche Welle en de Litouwse Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Linas Linkevicius. Opzich zij hij niets heel schokkends, maar het voor mij wel bevestigd dat naast de klassieke Oost-West geopolitieke tegenstelling er ook de nodige regionale belangen mee spelen die het geopolitieke spelletje nog complexer maken. Voor Litouwen, niet geheel onverwacht natuurlijk, speelt energieveiligheid een grote rol.

A policeman accused of acting as chief hitman to Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko has emerged from "retirement" to intimidate anti-government protesters.
Dmitri Pavlichenko, the former head of an elite police unit, was sanctioned by the European Union in 2004 for allegedly running a death squad that organised the killing of four of Mr Lukashenko's political opponents. He has denied involvement in the killings, said to have been carried out with a silenced pistol normally used for judicial executions in one of Belarus's jails.
After last month's disputed elections, he is understood to have been brought back into service, directing riot police who beat and arrested protesters in the days that followed. Last week, he also delivered a speech on the streets of the capital, Minsk, denouncing the opposition as "mercenaries and criminals".
"Sadly some of them, boozy and drugged up, began to destroy our city!" he declared. "Riot police and special forces came to the defence."
Mr Pavlichenko is among a number of senior Belarusian officials accused of involvement in the disappearance of opposition figures in the 1990s.
In 2004, a report to the Council of Europe's Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights linked him to the killings of Yuri Zakharenko, a former interior minister, Victor Gonchar, a former vice-president of the parliament, Anatoly Krasovski, a businessman who disappeared alongside Mr Gonchar, and Dmitri Zavadski, cameraman for the Russian TV channel.
It was claimed that three of the killings were carried out using the official execution pistol from the death row wing of Minsk's Pishchalauski Castle prison. The gun was said to have been signed out from the facility at the time of the murders.
A report into the disappearances by Belarus's own prosecutor general once described Mr Pavlichenko as “the organiser and head of a criminal body engaged in abduction and physical elimination of people.” However, Mr Pavlichenko was allegedly shielded from investigation on the personal orders of Mr Lukashenko, who in 2005 gave him an official award.
"The fact that Mr Pavlichenko is present on the streets is worrying, because he is one of the bloodiest figures of Mr Lukashenko's rule," said Tadeusz Giczan, a PHD researcher on Belarus at University College London. "He isn't the most senior figure, but he's the one who does the dirty work, which is perhaps why he's been brought out of retirement."
The reappearance of Mr Pavlichenko comes as the Belarusian authorities intensify their crackdown on the opposition.
This week police arrested Lilia Vlasova, a member of the “coordination council” set up by opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to oversee the peaceful transfer of power.
She is the third member of the council’s executive committee to be detained since Belarus’s prosecutor general launched a criminal probe into the group, accusing it of trying to “seize power” from Mr Lukashenko.
Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexeivich, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature for her studies of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Chernobyl disaster, has been questioned by police over her role on the committee.
The archbishop of Minsk, Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, was meanwhile barred from re-entering the country from Poland after speaking out against the brutal police crackdown on protesters.
“In peace-loving and tolerant Belarus...brother raised his hand against his brother,” he said in a special address.
“More and more one hears that the threat of a civil war is becoming real, which none of us could have imagined even a few months ago.”
Authorities have also sought to suppress a wave of strikes that broke out in response to the election result, and on Monday sentenced the leader of a walk-out at the Belaruskali potash factory to 15 days in jail.
Belarusian television is employing Russian state news journalists, especially from the Kremlin-funded channel Russia Today, to fill the airwaves following walkouts from their own staff, according to media reports.

WARSAW, Poland — The president of the Belarusian bishops’ conference has been barred from reentering his country from abroad, after warning in a pastoral letter that the nation’s worsening crisis could spill into civil war.
“Returning to Minsk, I was not allowed in at the Kuznica-Bialystok border crossing,” Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Minsk-Mohilev told the Catholic Information Agency, KAI, in neighboring Poland Aug. 31.
“No explanation was offered whatsoever, even though I’m a citizen of Belarus. I was told I was banned from entering Belarus, nothing more.”
Church sources in Minsk confirmed the exclusion of the 74-year-old church leader, as Belarusian security forces confronted demonstrators protesting the rule of President Alexander Lukashenko, who claimed to win a disputed presidential election Aug. 9.
In a statement Sept. 1, Lukashenko said there was information Kondrusiewicz might have citizenship in more than one country.
“We’re studying (it), I’m not confirming it. We want to study the issue. If everything is clean and legal, we will act according to the law. We do not care who he is — the top Catholic, Orthodox or Muslim. He must live according to the law,” Lukashenso said.
In his letter, read in Catholic churches Aug. 30, Kondrusiewicz said society was “spiritually ill” in Belarus, adding that he had arranged for a statue of St. Michael the Archangel to be carried through the church’s four dioceses in a bid to settle current conflicts.
“Our motherland is experiencing an unprecedented sociopolitical crisis, deepening day by day — in peace-loving and tolerant Belarus, brother has raised his hand against brother, resulting in bloodshed and many injuries,” said the archbishop.
“The difficult economic situation is deeply alarming, and we are threatened with international isolation, while the schism of society increases. … Increasingly, one can hear that the threat of civil war is becoming real, something none of us imagined a few months ago.”
“From the very beginning of the sociopolitical crisis, the Catholic Church has encouraged prayer and called problems to be solved through dialogue, remembering Christ’s words that without him we could do nothing,” Kondrusiewicz said.
“This crisis is an inevitable consequence of the sin of lawlessness. It is therefore necessary to confess personal and collective sin and repent, in order to change our lives. Truth should prevail instead of lies, good instead of evil, love instead of hatred, forgiveness instead of condemnation, unity instead of pernicious divisions.”
Belarus’s Interior Ministry confirmed at least 140 arrests during Aug. 30 protests around Minsk’s Independence Square.
Meanwhile, Lukashenko, in power since 1994, again denied electoral fraud and was shown carrying a machine gun outside his palace in an official birthday photo.
Church leaders confirmed Catholic clergy and laypeople had been beaten and jailed during protests, while in an Aug. 14 message to state officials, Kondrusiewicz said, “The beating of peaceful demonstrators who want to know the truth, their cruel treatment and inhumane detention, is a grave sin on the conscience of those who give criminal orders and commit violence.”
On Aug. 26, the archbishop also condemned the blocking of Minsk’s Sts. Simon and Helena Church by law enforcement agencies and the arrest of protesters who fled inside.
In an Aug. 31 interview with Poland’s Catholic TV Trwam, Kondrusiewicz warned the country’s opposition had no clear leader or values, but said he believed a new generation in Belarus had now “grown up to defend its rights.”
“There is reason to believe the election was dishonest — I have repeatedly appealed on behalf of the bishops’ conference for the problems to be resolved through peace and understanding, through a roundtable,” the church leader said.
“Despite the suffering, the Christian approach must be one of forgiveness. But people often do not hear the voice of the church, and I’m afraid the lack of any settlement is threatening a civil war.”
In an Aug. 31 message to Catholics, Minsk Auxiliary Bishop Yury Kasabutski said local clergy had learned “with bitterness and sadness” of Kondrusiewicz’s exclusion by border officials.
“At this difficult time for us all, let us mobilize in prayer, as well as showing special solidarity and support for each other,” said the bishop, whose message was carried on the church’s Catholic.by website.
“From the experience of our ancestors, who preserved and passed on the treasure of faith as the greatest value during times of persecution, we know prayer has omnipotent power,” he added.

Mikita Mikado heeft zich uitgesproken tegen het politiegeweld en is betrokken bij een fonds dat gelden ter beschikking stelt voor agenten die wegens gewetensbezwaren uit dienst willen treden.

Hindered by frayed ties with Europe, limited leverage and doubts about President Donald Trump's devotion to democracy in Belarus, the United States is gingerly trying to nudge the former Soviet state toward new elections without provoking Russia.
Lukashenko, who denies fraud, has responded with a violent crackdown on the protests and shown no sign of backing down despite sanctions imposed by three Baltic states on Monday and the threat, by a senior U.S. State Department official on Tuesday, of impending U.S. sanctions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has made no secret of his interest in Belarus, which is a conduit for Russian oil and gas to Europe and is vital to Moscow's European defense strategy. Russia has formed a police force to back Lukashenko if necessary and Putin has invited him to Moscow for talks.
Washington wants a way to bolster democracy in Belarus that avoids Russian intervention, something which - as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun told Russian officials last week in Moscow - would further damage U.S.-Russian ties.
Biegun also visited Ukraine, which borders Belarus, and Vienna, home to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), where he promoted the regional security group that includes Belarus, European nations, Russia and the United States as a vehicle to find a solution.
"This is not a contest between East and West, and certainly not a contest between Russia and the United States," he said on Friday, calling for violence against protesters to stop, those "unjustly detained" to be freed and "a truly free and fair election under independent observation."
Experts said he has an uphill climb.
"He has to work in the face of a lot of friction and unnecessary tension in U.S.-European relations and in the face of President Trump's own apparent ambivalence about supporting democracy," said Dan Fried, the former top U.S. diplomat for Europe who is now at the Atlantic Council think tank.
The Republican president, running against Democratic former vice president Joe Biden in the Nov. 3 U.S. election, has said little about Belarus, leaving some analysts with the impression he has scant interest.
"I like seeing democracy," he told reporters on Aug. 18. "It doesn't seem like it's too much democracy there."
CONCERNS ABOUT RUSSIAN INTERVENTION
A senior U.S. official said the United States and European Union were closely coordinating to find a way that avoids overt Russian intervention and opens "space" for a dialog between the opposition and Lukashenko on transitioning from his rule.
"We are not looking to impose a solution or suggest that we need to have a seat at the table," the official said on condition of anonymity.
A European diplomat, however, saw little chance for the United States and the EU to succeed via the OSCE because Belarus and Russia, as members of a group that operates by consensus, would be unlikely to go along.
While the OSCE is "the right forum," Putin is now sticking with Lukashenko, possibly looking to buy time for a "managed transition" to another leader acceptable to Russia and the opposition, said the diplomat on condition of anonymity.
Another European diplomat acknowledged the difficulty.
"I don't think anybody is naive enough to believe that the OSCE path is going to be easy," he said. "Everybody recognizes the complexity."
Asked if Trump cared about Belarus, this diplomat paused and replied: "Well, difficult for me to say. I think the United States does give a damn about Belarus - otherwise it would not have dispatched the deputy secretary" to the region.
Belarusian protesters have been careful not to wave EU or U.S. flags, but have instead brandished red and white flags used in Belarus after the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union before Lukashenko restored the Soviet version of the flag.
Aware of the potential geopolitical risks, they have steered clear of being drawn into conversations about whether they want to exit Moscow's orbit, saying they want strong relations with all countries.
Andrew Weiss, who served on the staff of the U.S. National Security Council and is now at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace think tank, said "neither the U.S. nor the EU has much leverage over Lukashenko." "That makes it very hard to push the Belarusian government to re-run a stolen election," he said. "Putin is a master at creating leverage, which is precisely why he indicated that Russia is potentially poised to come in militarily if requested, or even if not requested."

Helsinki ice hockey club Jokerit are facing a backlash over their decision to go ahead with a game in the Belarus capital Minsk on Thursday, which critics say helps normalise the regime of President Lukashenko, and undermines support for human rights.
The game against Dinamo Minsk marks the opening match of this year’s KHL season, but it comes after weeks of protests over rigged presidential elections in Belarus, a crackdown by regime authorities against pro-democracy protesters, and horrific accounts of torture and abuse meted out by police.
In a brief statement, Jokerit’s General Manager Jari Kurri confirms Thursday’s game will go ahead as scheduled, and says “we hope that Belarus will find peaceful solutions to its political situation.”
The club has apparently tried to postpone the game, but the request was turned down by Dinamo Minsk – and even Jokerit’s official fan club have said they support a forfeit if it’s not possible to postpone, and they’re backing a boycott of Minsk games by Dinamo’s official fan club too.
“Conceding the game, that’s not an option for us” says Jokerit Communications Manage Iiro Keurulainen.
“Of course we all have followed the news and are generally aware what’s going on in Minsk […] we have been in constant contact with Dinamo and it is safe to go there and play in Minsk” he tells News Now Finland, adding that a number of international football fixtures have also gone ahead in the Belarus capital recently.
Keurulainen says however that players haven’t expressed their concerns about the optics of seeming to normalise the situation in Minsk by traveling there. In January 2019 a Finnish footballer Riku Riski refused to attend a national team training camp in Qatar because of the human rights situation in that country.
“We haven’t had any kind of pressure from the players” says Keurulainen. “We haven’t had any message from the players concerning that.”
Jokerit will limit their time in Belarus flying on Thursday directly to Minsk, and returning back to Helsinki immediately after the game.
Media criticism about the fixture
One of the media outlets which has been outspoken about Jokerit’s Belarus trip is the Swedish-language newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet.
Sports Editor Filip Saxn says this is not a question of ice hockey, but a question of human rights.
“Hockey is sports and entertainment, and it’s not important in the big scheme of the world. And now Jokerit are saying all they’re thinking of is hockey” says Saxn.
“We’ve all seen, we’ve all read what is happening in Belarus. People are getting tortured, raped, murdered, people are fleeing the country. And here’s a Finnish hockey team going there as if nothing’s happening. Which in a sense is support for [Belarus President] Lukashenko” he tells News Now Finland.
Jokerit would reportedly face a 5-0 loss and a fine between 11,000 and 30,000 if they don’t play the game. But Saxn argues there’s much more at stake for the KHL, strongly backed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Jokerit’s Russian owners have strong ties to the Kremlin which for the KHL it’s really important that the game is played in Minsk. Especially now” says HBL Sports Editor Filip Saxn.
“Jokerit is the only Western team, and KHL needs them to play because it sends a strong signal both from Russia and from Belarus that everything is under control. That’s what Russia and Belarus want the world to see” he adds.
“Going there, Jokerit is enabling them to show that. It makes it a really political statement to play there.”
Ik denk dat de kritiek op Jokerit zeer terecht is. IJshockey is een grote sport in Belarus, dus dit kun je niet los van de politiek zien. Jong Oranje moet 4 september trouwens ook voetballen. Ik hoop dat die een verstandigere beslissing nemen, al denk ik dat het niet handig is om een politiek statement te maken, maar het op corona of zo te gooien.

De pers-secretaris van de nationale coordinatie raad Anton Rodnenkov heeft zojuist aan tut.by gemeldt: dat de leden van het presidium van de raad Dylevskij en Kovalkova, die vandaag na een arrest van 10 dagen op vrije voeten zouden moeten komen, opnieuw berecht gaan worden.
Het telegram kanaal van het Belarussische Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken meldt dat er gisteren (2 september) in totaal 24 mensen, waaronder 3 studenten, landelijk zijn aangehouden i.v.m. de massale protestacties.
Volgens het Ministerie zouden er gisteren ongeveer 1000 mensen aan dergelijke acties hebben deelgenomen.

Er is een stoelendans gaande in het veiligheidsapparaat, voor zover ik begrijp is het oude hoofd van de KGB, nu staatssecretaris van de veiligheidsraad en het oude hoofd van de KGK nu het nieuwe hoofd van de KGB. Als gevolg van deze stoelendans zijn er nog meer mensen doorgeschoven.
