Ondanks de avondklok zijn demonstranten in de Amerikaanse stad Minneapolis gisteravond opnieuw de straat opgegaan. De Amerikaanse hoofdstad Washington maakt zich op voor de grootste protesten tegen racisme die er zijn gehouden. Nooit eerder is op zo'n grote schaal gedemonstreerd tegen politiegeweld. Maar de protesten begonnen niet bij George Floyd. De burgerrechtenbeweging in Amerika kent een lange voorgeschiedenis van onderdrukking en politiegeweld.
Een kantelpunt in de geschiedenis is de March on Washington. In augustus van 1963 trokken een kwart miljoen zwarte Amerikanen naar de hoofdstad, om te demonstreren tegen de onderdrukking.
