Amerikanen hebben veel meer onderliggende gezondheidsproblemen (diabetes...) en omdat ze alles op credit betalen (bankstel, tv, koelkast, dirtbike, auto, fiets) hebben ze heel veel maandelijkse kosten. Twee weken niet betaald krijgen (velen krijgen per week of twee weken betaald) zorgt al voor grote problemen. Dat was het geval toen de overheid sloot, maar is nog veel extremer als commerciele bedrijven de deuren sluiten voor een tijdje, of ze worden gewoon op straat gezet.
Bovendien zijn mensen met obesitas en diabetes ook meer at risk om te worden opgenomen op de IC voor beademing. Ik ben benieuwd.

At least 100 deaths in the United States have now been linked to the coronavirus, according to a New York Times database that is tracking and mapping every known case in the country as more people are tested. On Tuesday evening, West Virginia became the 50th state to report a case.
The 101 deaths, all announced in the last three weeks, came as the number of known coronavirus cases in the United States soared past 5,600 on Tuesday. Hundreds more people are learning they have the illness each day, including more than 800 diagnoses on both Monday and Tuesday, as the nation’s testing capacity has grown significantly and as the virus spreads.
About half the country’s reported deaths have been in Washington State, including at least 30 linked to a long-term care facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland. Residents of at least two more long-term care facilities in Washington, plus others in Kansas and South Carolina, have also died, underscoring the elevated risks for older adults and people with underlying health problems.
Most of those who have died from the virus have been in their 60s or older, and several have been in their 90s. But other patients who died have been younger, including a corrections worker in New York City in his 50s and a man from the Seattle area in his 40s.
Though Washington, New York and California account for about two-thirds of the country’s coronavirus deaths, 14 other states have reported at least one fatal case of the illness. On Monday, officials in Texas reported their first death, a man in his 90s from Matagorda County whose coronavirus diagnosis was not confirmed until a day after he died. Rural America Isn't Ready for a Pandemic
In West Virginia, the health infrastructure—one required for a response to the coronavirus—has been hollowed out.
A popular t-shirt in my home state proclaims west virginia: covid-19 national champions, self-isolating since 1863. Until yesterday, West Virginia was the only state not to have a reported case of COVID-19.
I’m a West Virginia native who has been working in public health in the Army for 15 years and back home for the past five. Our status as an isolated region of the country comes with some irritating stereotypes, but we can also poke fun at ourselves. Under the humor of that T-shirt lies some truth. West Virginians feel very protective of our state.
And right now, I am concerned. West Virginia and other parts of rural America may be somewhat less exposed to the virus. But the infrastructure required for a pandemic response has been hollowed out.
A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated that West Virginia is the state with the highest share of adults who are at risk of serious illness if infected by COVID-19 (51 percent) compared to the national average (41 percent). Like much of rural America, our state is plagued by a declining population, fewer social-support structures, lack of access to nutritious foods, and lower educational achievement, all of which hamper resilience to both man-made and natural disasters.
Rural America is already dealing with many other infectious diseases: hepatitis B and C, HIV due to needle sharing from injection drug use, and chronic diseases like obesity, cancer, and diabetes. A 2014 study demonstrated the widening health disparity between rural and urban areas, showing a life expectancy of 79.1 years in large metropolitan areas, 76.9 in small urban towns, and 76.7 in rural areas. The opioid crisis has disproportionately driven down life expectancy in the rural U.S. because of drug-overdose deaths. Other “diseases of despair,” as described by the Princeton professors Anne Case and Angus Deaton in 2015, including heart and lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and suicides, have been on the rise in the rural heartland as well.
In our clinics in Kanawha County, we see people from every walk of life. We have many elderly patients with chronic illnesses and conditions such as obesity and heart, lung, and kidney disease. We also have a large and growing medication-assisted treatment program for people in recovery from opioid use. We see the homeless and the working poor. We provide a pulmonary rehabilitation center for coal miners who have black lung and other occupational lung diseases. Our school-based health staff help children afflicted by the opioid crisis. All of our providers also advocate for those without adequate transportation and for children who rely on schools to keep them fed. We provide this care even as the system as a whole faces cuts.

And right now, I am concerned. West Virginia and other parts of rural America may be somewhat less exposed to the virus. But the infrastructure required for a pandemic response has been hollowed out.
A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated that West Virginia is the state with the highest share of adults who are at risk of serious illness if infected by COVID-19 (51 percent) compared to the national average (41 percent). Like much of rural America, our state is plagued by a declining population, fewer social-support structures, lack of access to nutritious foods, and lower educational achievement, all of which hamper resilience to both man-made and natural disasters.
Rural America is already dealing with many other infectious diseases: hepatitis B and C, HIV due to needle sharing from injection drug use, and chronic diseases like obesity, cancer, and diabetes. A 2014 study demonstrated the widening health disparity between rural and urban areas, showing a life expectancy of 79.1 years in large metropolitan areas, 76.9 in small urban towns, and 76.7 in rural areas. The opioid crisis has disproportionately driven down life expectancy in the rural U.S. because of drug-overdose deaths. Other “diseases of despair,” as described by the Princeton professors Anne Case and Angus Deaton in 2015, including heart and lung disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and suicides, have been on the rise in the rural heartland as well.
In our clinics in Kanawha County, we see people from every walk of life. We have many elderly patients with chronic illnesses and conditions such as obesity and heart, lung, and kidney disease. We also have a large and growing medication-assisted treatment program for people in recovery from opioid use. We see the homeless and the working poor. We provide a pulmonary rehabilitation center for coal miners who have black lung and other occupational lung diseases. Our school-based health staff help children afflicted by the opioid crisis. All of our providers also advocate for those without adequate transportation and for children who rely on schools to keep them fed. We provide this care even as the system as a whole faces cuts.

Hun huis kunnen ze meestal wel betalen. In NL hebben de meeste maar 3 of 4 grote vaste lasten per maand (hypotheek/huur, auto, gas, electriciteit en verzekeringen). In de VS is alles op afbetaling, dus die hebben bergen credit betalingen (bankstel, koelkast, vloerkleed, dirtbike/quad/skis/fiets, tv etc). Mis je een betaling dan krijg je gelijk een boete en 15% rente over het te betalen bedrag, dan zit je heel snel in een neerwaartse spiraal. Gebeurt dat een keer, dan neem je een extra baantje, maar daar gaan ze dan ook heel snel weer naar leven. En als ze het anders zouden willen, moeten ze maar eens wat aan hun politieke systeem doen, dat is puur gericht om bedrijven en hun winsten te beschermen, niet om een voor een goed leefklimaat voor hun burgers te zorgen.quote:
