A top climate scientist quit USDA, following others who say Trump has politicized science.

One of the nation’s leading climate change scientists is quitting the Agriculture Department in protest over the Trump administration’s efforts to bury his groundbreaking study about how rice loses nutrients due to rising carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Lewis Ziska, a 62-year-old plant physiologist who’s worked at USDA’s Agricultural Research Service for more than two decades, told POLITICO he was alarmed when department officials not only questioned the findings of the study — which raised potentially serious concerns for the 600 million people who depend on rice for most of their calories — but also tried to minimize press coverage of the paper, which was published in the journal Science Advances last year.

“You get the sense that things have changed, that this is not a place for you to be exploring things that don't agree with someone's political views,” Ziska said in a wide-ranging interview. “That's so sad. I can't even begin to tell you how sad that is.”

The departure follows several other government officials recently resigning from their posts over accusations that the administration is censoring climate science — reports that have raised alarm about scientific integrity in the federal government.

Last week, an intelligence analyst at the State Department said he left his postafter administration officials blocked his testimony to Congress about the wide-ranging national security implications of climate change. A National Park Service employee also stepped forward, alleging she lost her job after refusing to scrub mentions of human-caused climate change from a peer-reviewed paper that was set to publish.

A POLITICO investigation revealed last month that USDA has routinely buried its own climate-related science and other work on climate change that continues. POLITICO also recently reported USDA suppressed the release of its own plan for studying and responding to climate change.

The RNC reminded many of us, with dates varying, that “we have not heard from you since 05/05/2016.” The RNC is worried the obvious may be true — that we might have “deserted our president and our party.”

But they have it backwards. President Trump and the GOP leadership have deserted the traditional conservatives, the Republican agenda and the core values of the party.

Many of us joined because we believed in a strong defense, fiscal responsibility, close attention to the Constitution, and keeping government as small as possible. We were compassionate conservatives and looked to the Reagan and Bush teams for example, and to Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower for inspiration.

Today’s Republican Party, under Trump, is in another universe. It has two problems — the president himself, and what he has done to the party.

President Trump is a disgrace to his office. He is a sexist, a pathological liar and the first president in my lifetime who appears not to work hard to master the duties of his office. The only thing worse than his character are his policies. Trump has been anti-alliance and pro-dictator, a policy that defies benign explanation. The United States has stopped leading in international organizations. Our allies are adrift.

Trump has abandoned free trade and fostered an economic policy characterized by tariffs, a tax cut for the rich, no apparently controls on domestic spending, and the return to trillion-dollar-per-year deficits. Trump’s idea of fixing health care is to repeal ObamaCare without replacing it. The economy continues to do well, not because of him, but in spite of him.

His big fix on illegal immigration was to impose stricter enforcement that results in separating children from their parents at the border. The administration’s inhumane treatment of border crossers and asylum seekers is a stain on our national honor. Neither Mexico nor Trump’s own party would fund his wall, so he took the money from the defense budget.

The Trump administration has set a record for firing cabinet-level officials and for not manning senior billets subject to senatorial confirmation. The best of his appointees — James Mattis, H.R. McMaster, John Kelly, and now Dan Coats — have left office, apparently for telling Trump the truth about his abuse of the national interest.

If incompetence were an impeachable offense, Trump would be convicted, except for one fact: he has neutered the Republicans in the legislative branch. Knowing his popularity among “the base,” they have lost their courage and independence. A veiled threat of having a pro-Trump candidate run against them in a primary has created squads of toadies throughout the House and Senate.

The behavior of House Republicans during former special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony was similarly outrageous. Rather than engaging the witness or discussing the Russian threat to our elections, they took turns weaving conspiracy theories about obscure villains and how the president’s rights were trampled as he apparently tried to obstruct justice.

In times past, the lions of the Senate would insist on respect for the law and the Constitution. We remember the Republican legislators who came to the White House to tell President Nixon that he would be convicted of his Watergate-related crimes. He resigned forthwith.

The Republicans in today’s Senate — nicknamed, insulted and browbeaten by our vulgar president — are pliable and eager to please the “master tweeter.” Their nominal leader, Vice President Mike Pence, has become a joke even in this party of kiss-ups. The actual Republican leader, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), appears wedded to the president’s agenda. This great deliberative body has been reduced to being a transmission belt for Trump’s desires.

In the meantime, thousands of Republicans have left the party. The dissidence in the party is significant. When President Trump leaves the White House, he may well take what’s left of the Republican Party with him, destroying the two-party system.

Trump remains popular in his new party, but many rank-and-file Republicans will continue to opt for country over party. For them, 2019 will be another year that they don’t write a check to the Republican National Committee.

"In fact, amid all the finger-pointing and blame-laying and repulsive attempts to turn these tragedies to political advantage before the bodies are even cold, I would posit that the lack of thought and prayers is probably the single biggest factor in what is behind them," he continued.

Huckabee's comments came after a weekend in which mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left more than 30 people dead. The tragedies have sparked discussions about mass shootings in the U.S. and who or what is to blame.

Democrats’ claims that President Donald Trump’s campaign conspired with Russia were tossed out Tuesday by a judge who noted there were no allegations that anyone from the campaign stole documents from the Democratic National Committee.

The lawsuit brought by the committee alleged that Trump’s campaign conspired with Russia, WikiLeaks, Trump’s son-in-law and others. Trump’s campaign and lawyers for the other defendants denied the allegations.

U.S. District Judge John G. Koeltl said Russia was “undoubtably” the primary wrongdoer in the alleged criminal enterprise, but the country can’t be sued in U.S. courts except in special circumstances not present in this case.

Meanwhile, he said the actions of the Trump campaign and others were protected by the First Amendment.

“In sum, the DNC does not allege any facts to show plausibly that any of the defendants, other than the Russia Federation, had any role in hacking the DNC’s computers or stealing its information,” Koeltl wrote. “It attributes that conduct only to the Russian Federation.

“And the DNC does not dispute that the documents were of public importance. Therefore, the First Amendment protects the publication of those stolen documents,” the judge said.

The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, and the American Civil Liberties Union had submitted written arguments supporting defendant WikiLeaks’ request that the lawsuit be tossed.

In support of his findings, Koeltl cited the Pentagon Papers case in which the U.S. Supreme Court concluded that The New York Times and the Washington Post were constitutionally protected when they published stories about a top-secret study that revealed the U.S. government misled the public about the Vietnam War.

Adrienne Watson, the DNC’s deputy communications director, said in an email that the DNC is still reviewing the ruling.

“At first glance, this opinion raises serious concerns about our protections from foreign election interference and the theft of private property to advance the interests of our enemies,” Watson said.

“At a time when the Trump administration and Republican leaders in Congress are ignoring warnings from the president’s own intelligence officials about foreign interference in the 2020 election, this should be of concern to anyone who cares about our democracy and the sanctity of our elections,” Watson added.

In emails, several lawyers for people and groups named in the suit reacted to Koeltl’s decision.

Grant Smith, a lawyer for longtime Trump friend Roger Stone, said he was pleased the judge “saw through the Democrats’ thin lawsuit. It was always a Hail Mary in the DNC’s attempt to hold people, and in particular our client Roger Stone, responsible for the loss of Hilary Clinton in the 2016 election.”

Caroline Polisi, representing ex-Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, said the lawsuit’s claims about her client were “particularly anemic and bordered on the absurd.”

Joshua Dratel, an attorney for WikiLeaks, said he was “very gratified with the result, which reaffirms First Amendment principles that apply to journalists across the board, whether they work for large institutions or small independent operations.”

"That was some crowd," Trump said in the video. "And we had twice the number outside. And then you had this crazy Beto. Beto had 400 people in a parking lot.

Dit kan leuk worden. Vooral als Trump verliest en een Never-Trumper stelt zich kandidaat. Wat moet de RNC dan doen? Zonder staatssteun alles riggen voor establishmentkandidaat Trump omdat die terug is gekomen op zijn toezegging uit 2016 zijn belastinggegevens openbaar te maken? Het is voer voor de spotjesmakers.
Het maakt uiteraard niets uit voor 2020, maar als een zittende POTUS zo'n staat verliezen bij de primaries is best *AUW*.

President Trump has built much of his presidency — and his 2020 reelection campaign — around a simple message: Illegal immigration is a national crisis.

Trump says that undocumented immigrants threaten national security, and they also hurt American workers by taking jobs and lowering overall wages.

“Tolerance for illegal immigration is not compassionate,” Trump said in his State of the Union address this year. “It is cruel.”

But, as The Washington Post has detailed this year, Trump’s company has relied in private on workers without legal immigration status even as Trump denounced such immigrants in public.

For years, and into Trump’s presidency, the president’s golf clubs employed undocumented workers as waiters, groundskeepers and housekeepers, according to the accounts of more than 40 former workers and supervisors who spoke to The Post. He also employed such workers as part of an in-house construction crew for stone masonry projects at several of his golf courses.

In doing so, Trump reaped the financial benefits of using undocumented employees — an ability to pay his employees lower wages and fewer benefits — while reaping the political benefits of attacking it.

The Trump Organization has denied that it knowingly hired undocumented immigrants. The company fired at least 20 undocumented workers this year after an internal audit or a check with the federal E-Verify system found that they had submitted fraudulent papers.

“This is one of the reasons why my father is fighting so hard for immigration reform. The system is broken,” Eric Trump, the president’s son, told The Post in January.

Most recently, The Post reported that President Trump’s company has enrolled all its golf courses in the E-Verify system, which revealed that more of the company’s longtime employees were undocumented. At least two workers have been fired as a result.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far about the Trump Organization’s use of undocumented workers:

How many Trump properties have employed undocumented workers — and for how long?

At least five golf courses — and for 17 years at one club.

A roving construction crew that has been working for Trump for nearly two decades also has employed workers without legal status.

This crew was composed of immigrants from Ecuador and Guatemala. They built fountains, rock walls, stone chimneys and other masonry projects at Trump’s winery in Virginia as well as at his golf courses from New York to Florida.

“If you’re a good worker, papers don’t matter,” said Jorge Castro, an undocumented Ecuadorean immigrant who worked for the Trump-owned outfit, known as Mobile Payroll Construction, from 2010 until April of this year.

Since December, when the New York Times told the story of two women who worked without legal status at Bedminster, the Trump Organization has fired undocumented workers at five of its 12 U.S. golf clubs. Three of the clubs are in New Jersey, in the towns of Bedminster, Colts Neck and Pine Hill. Two are in New York, in Westchester and Dutchess counties.

In Westchester, 11 workers were fired in January, including some who had been at the club for more than a decade. Several of those workers told The Post they were abruptly fired after a meeting with a Trump Organization executive.

“I started to cry,” said Gabriel Sedano, a former maintenance worker from Mexico who was among those fired. He had worked at the club since 2005. “I told them they needed to consider us. I had worked almost 15 years for them in this club, and I’d given the best of myself to this job.”

At the Bedminster club, workers without legal status were hired even longer ago — back in 2002, when the course was being built.

The latest known firings happened in April, at Trump’s Colts Neck, N.J., course. There, two longtime cooks — both undocumented immigrants from Mexico — said they were fired in April after the E-Verify system flagged them for presenting fake documents. The Trump Organization did not respond to questions about whether E-Verify checks had resulted in firings at other courses.

Did their supervisors know about their status?

The Trump Organization has said it was unaware that it employed undocumented workers until recently.

But many former Trump workers say that’s hard to believe. They said there were dozens like them working without legal status — an estimated 100 in Bedminster alone. They told The Post they believed their managers knew.

“My whole town practically lived there,” one Costa Rican worker said of the Bedminster club.

In another flag to the management, a Bedminster police officer investigating a hit-and-run in 2011 arrested an employee of Trump’s club and determined he was an undocumented immigrant working under a fake name. The officer told the club’s head of security the employee “may be using a false name and government documentation.”

The worker was deported.

At Westchester, one former manager said that the workers were known to be undocumented — and that management used that fact as leverage against them. When Trump headquarters asked them to reduce overtime, the manager said, Trump bosses told undocumented workers to “clock out” and then continue working for free.

“There was a conscious effort to pay less wages because they knew about the lack of documents,” said the former manager, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal company policy. “You know, where are they going to go?”

Trump’s company called these accounts “nonsense.”

“The Trump Organization has extensive policies and procedures in place to ensure compliance with all wage and hour laws,” Trump spokeswoman Kimberly Benza said, after The Post sent a brief description of the employees’ accounts. “This story is total nonsense and nothing more than unsubstantiated allegations from illegal immigrants who unlawfully submitted fake identification in an effort to obtain employment.”

Did Trump know he employed workers who had entered the United States illegally?

We don’t know.

Neither the Trump Organization nor the White House has responded to questions about what Trump knew.

Eric Trump has indicated the Trump Organization was unaware of these undocumented workers until recently, when he said the company was forced to fire them. “Our employees are like family, but when presented with fake documents, an employer has little choice,” he said.

Last month, Trump said that he did not know whether his company employed undocumented workers.

“Well, that I don’t know. Because I don’t run it,” Trump told reporters. “But I would say this: Probably every club in the United States has that, because it seems to me, from what I understand, a way that people did business.”

As a candidate, what did Trump say about his company’s hiring practices?

During the presidential campaign, Trump said his company was using E-Verify, a voluntary federal system that allows employers to quickly check the immigration status of new hires.

“I have thousands and thousands of employees. I have hired tens of thousands of employees, many Hispanic, over the years. Many, many. They’re fantastic,” Trump said at a rally in Beaumont, Tex., in 2015.

“But I have — and I think, to me, it’s very important — E-Verify,” he continued. “So now I find out: Are they legal or not? Now, if they can’t get a job, they’re moving out. They’re going to move out — no one has to — you don’t need soldiers, they’re going to move out. It’s so simple. But a politician doesn’t know this.”

Was that true?

Until 2019, only three of Trump’s golf courses were listed in the official database of companies enrolled in E-Verify. That changed, however. After media reporting about the company’s firing of undocumented workers, Eric Trump pledged to enroll all his company’s business.

Now, all 12 of Trump’s U.S. golf courses, as well as several other Trump businesses, are listed as using the system. The two cooks fired at Trump’s golf course in Colts Neck are the only employees known to have been terminated because of E-Verify checks.

What investigations may the Trump Organization face into its use of undocumented labor?

In New York, the state attorney general’s office has interviewed more than two dozen former undocumented workers at Trump’s Westchester County golf club, focusing on allegations of wage- and labor-law violations.

Two former undocumented workers from that club told The Post that they were told to work extra hours without pay. Others at the same club alleged they were denied overtime pay for working 60-hour weeks. The New York Attorney General’s office declined to comment in May 2019 about the state of that inquiry.

In addition, investigators for the New Jersey attorney general and the FBI have gathered information from former workers at the Bedminster club, according to an attorney for some of the workers. But it is unclear whether those agencies are still looking into the club.

The New Jersey attorney general declined to comment. The FBI declined to comment.

In late April, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) asked acting Homeland Security secretary Kevin McAleenan to assure that “the department won’t play favorites” by giving the Trump clubs special treatment.

McAleenan’s answer was general, not mentioning Trump or his clubs by name.

The department’s “efforts will remain targeted at the most significant violators,” He said. McAleenan said he wanted to “ensure we have integrity in the entire process.”

Would a wall have stopped the undocumented workers from coming to the United States?

Some of the Trump workers without legal status said they entered the country by crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. Trump has said the barrier he proposes would stop such migrants from crossing the border.

Critics of his idea point out that existing stretches of wall and fencing haven’t stopped tens of thousands of people from getting through each year and that there is no end to the ways people can get over, under, around or through such barriers.

Other workers arrived on flights with tourist visas and overstayed those visas. In those cases, a wall wouldn’t matter.
