Ik heb wel een casualty list, met o.a. KIA (Killed in action) en DOW (died of wounds) erop, maar ook FOD en DNB er op. Weet jij waar die voor staan soms?

Lawrence E Folske is op 11 februari 1976 overleden en ligt begraven in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Dit is zijn grafsteen.

Ook van Clifford G Harsh hebben we een grafsteen gevonden. Hij ligt op Arlington Park Cemetery in Wisconsin. Dit is niet het beroemde Arlington National Cemetery (dat ligt immers in Virginia).

Dit gaat over Operation Raincoat. Dan hebben we het voor zover ik even snel kan zien over december 1943. Operation Raincoat duurde van 2 december '43 t/m 10 december '43.
The artillery preparation for 'Raincoat' was the heaviest to date by the 5th Army. Het 985th lag tot 5 december '43 in stelling rond Marzanello. Een goede locatie om de Bernhardt Linie onder vuur te kunnen nemen. Echter is men op de 5de verplaatst naar een locatie midden in het doelgebied bij Campozillone. Erg onlogisch voor een artillerie eenheid. Zeker omdat infanterie eenheden daar nog zwaar in gevecht waren gedurende de dagen er na.

Hoi Bar goeie vraag, weet ik eigenlijk niet. De voorbeelden die me zo even te binnen schieten waren wel allemaal Amerikanen eigenlijk. Toevallig heb ik net een anekdote gelezen over een Brit die ook een short snorter had, maar dat was niet echt een soldaat (formeel misschien wel). Uit de autobiografie van Generaal Bradley:
For the first time I realized how dreadfully lonely and isolated the life of a monarch must be, how difficult it must be for him to have any sort of life outside the royal family. He seemed to take great delight in signing my "short snorter" and produced his own, as did the others.
'The others' zouden ook Britse militairen kunnen zijn, dit is tijdens een diner dat door Churchill is georganiseerd en waar alle D-day commandanten zijn uitgenodigd.
