There is no doubt in my mind at the moment: Estonia has the best song. I don’t think it will win though, partly because there isn’t an effective hookline, so will the viewers who have only heard it once remember it? I hope so.

On the next places I have Latvia and Georgia. Both very outstanding songs that go a bit beyond the Eurovision formula. Which is (almost) always a good thing. Then Spain, Netherlands and France.

The first semi-final will be a tougher heat, though I’d be hopeful of the Netherlands’ qualification chances despite a muted reaction to Douwe Bob’s ‘Slow Down‘. Expectations were high for a worthy sequel to ‘Calm After The Storm’ in 2014, and ‘Slow Down’ has an excellent, Eagles-esque build with some wonderful instrumentation. Live zou het wel kunnen werken als het authentiek en sympathiek in beeld wordt gebracht. Een wereldnummer is het niet, maar het lijkt me wel spek naar de bek van Radio 2. Het nummer en de stem doen me wat aan Stan Van Samang denken en Douwe Bob lijkt ook dezelfde charme uit te stralen. Ik had hem echter liever met een origineler nummer op de proppen zien komen, want dit is te doorsnee voor mij.

Fabio Ponente: Nederland springt er voor mij uit met een totaal ander genre nummer. Dit is zeer aangenaam om naar te luisteren, en ook verrassend omdat het iets totaal anders is. De clip én Douwe zelf zijn ook leuk om naar te kijken, wat ook een pluspunt is. Dit vind ik een goed nummer, het onderscheidt zich succesvol van de rest.

Roy Van der Merwe: Ik ben een fan van Nederlandse muziek, vooral van artiesten als George Baker, Luv, Maywood, enzovoort. Deze zanger is onbekend voor me, maar hij ziet er leuk uit en zijn stem is heel mooi. Dit is allesbehalve een winnaar, maar wel veel beter dan de Nederlandse inzendingen van de afgelopen jaren. Daarmee ben ik misschien in de minderheid, maar het leuke van het songfestival is dat elk lied zijn eigen schare fans heeft. Zal zijn outing als biseksueel hem meer stemmen opleveren van vrouwelijke én mannelijke fans?

Op 1:50 is ene Zoran aan het woord en ik denk dat dit stiekem ook wel mee speelt bij miljoenen Oost-Europeanen. Zij hebben een bepaald idee van hoe een Eurovisie liedje moet klinken en als het daarvan afwijkt, dan wordt er niet op gestemd want 'ja, het is wel een leuk nummer, maar niet echt Eurovisie'

His voice fits the song just perfectly. This is the type of song I have been waiting for a long time to hear on the Eurovision stage. Although the first semifinal is strong, I do hope The Netherlands will qualify.

Hmm, hoe zag de lijst van voorgaande jaren eruit? YouTube zit er nogal eens naast. Ik denk dat Nederland en België te laag worden ingeschat, en Frankrijk veel te hoog.

Vorig jaar werd Nederland op plek 18 geschat in de finale, nog hoger dan de CL die op plek 19 werden geschat. Het is en blijft lastig te voorspellen, veel hangt af van de live performance.

Dat soort polls houden geen rekening met de live-performances, buurlandstemmingen, etc. Frankrijk gaat live denk ik niet goed overkomen, een beetje dat Trijntje Oosterhuis-effect.

Wat betreft live performance ben ik het met je eens, logisch ook aangezien dat nog niet bekend is. Maar natuurlijk houdt het wel rekening met buurlandstemmingen, in beide opvattingen van het woord. Want de rangschikkingen op deze site worden bepaald door mensen die punten doorgeven, en die komen echt overal vandaan. Inclusief hun buurlandliefde en/of haat.

Hmm, als Rusland een hond op het podium zet die drie minuten blaft, zal die onderaan in de ranglijstjes komen, maar je kan ervan op aan dat het doorgaat naar de finale. De hardcore fans kijken toch meer naar de liedjes, terwijl je op de avond zelf ziet dat er in sommige landen (Wit-Rusland, Cyprus, Azerbeidzjan) heel andere factoren meespelen, veel meer dan bij de fans. Dat wil overigens niet zeggen dat goede liedjes niet kunnen winnen.
