Syrië is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesië demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syrië. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 220.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syrië bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syrië, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden proberen neutraal te blijven in de oorlog tussen de regering en de rebellen, er zijn echter wel verschillende gevechten geweest tussen rebellen waaronder FSA + Al Nusra (Al Qaida) en de Koerden. Ook hebben er tussen het NDF/SAA en de Koerden zich wat incidenten voor gedaan. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier. Turkije is tegen de Koerdische autonomie en steunt daarom ISIS en Al Qaida tegen ze.

IS(IS) - wahabitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syrië opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch wordt onthoofd door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering, de Koerden als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.
Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordanië, Libië, VAE, Saudi-Arabië en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syrië met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

Five years ago, Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government hoped to serve as a model for its Arab Muslim neighbours and shape them along its own neo-Islamist lines. Now Turkey exhibits similar ethno-sectarian rifts to the failed states to its south. Its influence in Syria is nil, and it is in danger of losing control over its territory. President Erdogan, raging against Russia and Syria, and the US and its allies among Kurdish militia advancing across northern Syria, urgently needs a reality check.
A former cabinet colleague of Mr Erdogan’s told a newspaper this week he tried to warn him against taking sides in Syria in 2011, as the uprising against the Assads turned into civil war. The then prime minister retorted that it would be over in six months. There is no evidence he is better at taking advice now he is president — with unbridled power that has polarised Turkey. The stakes are much higher.
Syria has disintegrated into de facto partition, with Isis jihadis controlling half its territory and a third of Iraq. As Mr Erdogan sought to bring down Bashar al-Assad, his former protégé, he allowed Turkey to be used as a pipeline for jihadi volunteers entering the Syrian fray. While they set up networks inside Turkey, Russia stormed into Syria last September to prop up and expand the Assad rump state. President Vladimir Putin is eradicating everything between the regime and Isis, cutting Turkey’s supply corridor to its favoured Islamist rebels, and driving a new wave of refugees into Turkey — and eventually Europe.
Turkey, a Nato member, now threatens to send troops into Syria, which could drag the Atlantic alliance into conflict with Russia. Mr Erdogan is already at daggers drawn with Mr Putin, a former admirer, after Turkey shot down a Russian jet it said was inside its airspace last year. President Putin said he would learn to “regret this more than once”. Syria is shaping up as an Afghanistan on the Mediterranean — and it is leaking into Turkey which could start resembling Pakistan.
Far fetched? The latest Ankara bombing follows a string of atrocities, the worst of which was the Isis suicide attack on a Kurdish and leftwing peace rally in the capital in October that killed more than 100 activists. The government made the improbable claim that it was a conspiracy of leftist and Kurdish terrorists, in league with jihadis. Turkish journalists had already identified the Isis cell responsible after it bombed a Kurdish cultural centre on the Syrian border in July. This event, after the ruling party lost its majority in June, rekindled a 30-year war with insurgents of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Mr Erdogan had worked to end that. But for electoral gain he turned ultranationalist and started bombing not Isis but the PKK, which fell into his trap by killing policemen and soldiers.
A polarised country restored his majority in November, since when he has rained fire on the PKK-aligned Syrian Kurdish fighters consolidating territory to the south.
Ankara fears that these advances, moving west across northern Syria as Russia drives out non-Isis Sunni rebels, will stoke Kurdish separatism in Turkey. President Obama needs to convince Mr Erdogan this is necessary to prevent Isis — the far greater threat — from filling the vacuum. That can only work if the US can rein in the ambitions of its Kurdish allies — and try to devise a new entente between Ankara and the Kurds. Hard, but less so than the alternatives.

En met deze logica van het zichzelf een vrijbrief geven om daar ongevraagd naar binnen te lopen, was Putin dus ook best wel goed bezig met z'n straaljager op Turks grondgebied.
Z'n inzicht heeft net zoveel waarde als een papiertje op z'n Bassie en Adriaan Universiteit.

De VS heeft afgelopen dagen tientallen luchtaanvallen op Shadadi gedaan om de SDF te assisteren bij hun offensief, dus lijkt me een onzinclaim.

Hoe dan ook, blijft interessant om deze ontwikkelingen te zien. Zal Obama steun voor YPG opgeven of niet? Obama komt tot een keuze, het is of Turkije en of een dikke middelvinger naar Erdogan

Tja.. het entertainment niveau zal wel hoog zijn maar ik vind er weinig leuks aan, het begon toch echt wel recent met Erdogan's troepen en illegale moordpartijen in Syrie waar hij niet mag zijn, dit heeft er voor gezorgt dat ze de YPG binnenhaalden als extra bedreiging En dan ben je als President toch meer een instabiele dan een stabiele peiler. Ik mocht Erdogan wel in zn begindagen als PM maar het ging langzaam naar de afgrond en nu is het ordinair piemelopmeten ten koste van de veiligheid van de eigen bevolking. Ik sta al heel lang niet meer achter 'm.quote:

Turkije krijgt nog wel meer problemen voor zijn kiezen in de nabije toekomst. De onbeperkte doorstroom van jihadisten zal zich niet onbetuigd laten. Daar zijn netwerken opgericht die in de toekomst nog wel vaker gebruikt zullen gaan worden voor aanslagen, vanuit IS, Al Qaeda of hoe ze zich tegen die tijd ook noemen.quote:

On October 25, Turkish forces also attacked the village of Buban. During the attack two civilians wounded.[97]
On 13 February 2016, Turkey began heavy artillery bombing of Kurds in North Aleppo and at Azaz as they advanced against opposition groups.[100] The US urged Turkey to stop the shelling of the Kurds and focus on fighting the group Islamic State (IS),[101] however, Turkey defied the US and French calls and continued the shelling the next day too.[102] Also, in a telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey will continue to strike back at Kurdish fighters in Syria.[103] Syria called the Turkish strikes a violation of its territory, and urged UN Security Council action to "put an end to the crimes of the Turkish regime".[104] It also accused Ankara of allowing some 100 gunmen to enter Syria, also, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said some 350 Islamist fighters had been allowed to travel through Turkish territory on Saturday 14 February 2016 to reinforce Islamist rebels in Azaz and Tal Rifaat.[105] Turkish artillery also targeted Syrian forces on both days.[106][107]
15 February
On 15 February, Turkey hit again Kurdish forces in Syria. A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said the strikes came after a border security outpost in the Hatay area was attacked.[108] In addition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Turkish troops were shelling, also, the road to the west of the town of Tal Rifaat and also the region to the west of the Syrian border town of Azaz, but failed to stop the advance of the Kurdish forces.[109]
16 February
On 16 February, Turkish forces continued to shell the positions of Syrian Kurds in northern Syria for the fourth day. Turkish military said that it was retaliating to fire coming from the region.[110]
Turkey urged its NATO allies to participate in a ground offensive in Syria to fight ISIS while continuing to shell YPG positions.[111]
17 February
On 17 February, Turkish forces continued to shell the positions of Syrian Kurds in northern Syria for fifth day in a row. Turkish artillery units deployed at the border in the Kilis Province shelled the positions of the PYD at around 4.45 p.m. within the rules of engagement. The Turkish military stating it was “retaliating” to fire coming from the region.[112]
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would continue shelling Kurdish militants across the border in Syria, despite calls from Washington and other Western capitals to halt the attacks.[113]
18 February
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, after a suicide car bombing attack in Ankara, that Turkey would continue the shelling of YPG positions in northern Syria.[114]
19 February

On 13 February 2016, Turkey began heavy artillery bombing of Kurds in North Aleppo and at Azaz as they advanced against opposition groups.[100] The US urged Turkey to stop the shelling of the Kurds and focus on fighting the group Islamic State (IS),[101] however, Turkey defied the US and French calls and continued the shelling the next day too.[102] Also, in a telephone call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey will continue to strike back at Kurdish fighters in Syria.[103] Syria called the Turkish strikes a violation of its territory, and urged UN Security Council action to "put an end to the crimes of the Turkish regime".[104] It also accused Ankara of allowing some 100 gunmen to enter Syria, also, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said some 350 Islamist fighters had been allowed to travel through Turkish territory on Saturday 14 February 2016 to reinforce Islamist rebels in Azaz and Tal Rifaat.[105] Turkish artillery also targeted Syrian forces on both days.[106][107]
15 February
On 15 February, Turkey hit again Kurdish forces in Syria. A Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman said the strikes came after a border security outpost in the Hatay area was attacked.[108] In addition, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that Turkish troops were shelling, also, the road to the west of the town of Tal Rifaat and also the region to the west of the Syrian border town of Azaz, but failed to stop the advance of the Kurdish forces.[109]
16 February
On 16 February, Turkish forces continued to shell the positions of Syrian Kurds in northern Syria for the fourth day. Turkish military said that it was retaliating to fire coming from the region.[110]
Turkey urged its NATO allies to participate in a ground offensive in Syria to fight ISIS while continuing to shell YPG positions.[111]
17 February
On 17 February, Turkish forces continued to shell the positions of Syrian Kurds in northern Syria for fifth day in a row. Turkish artillery units deployed at the border in the Kilis Province shelled the positions of the PYD at around 4.45 p.m. within the rules of engagement. The Turkish military stating it was “retaliating” to fire coming from the region.[112]
Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would continue shelling Kurdish militants across the border in Syria, despite calls from Washington and other Western capitals to halt the attacks.[113]
18 February
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, after a suicide car bombing attack in Ankara, that Turkey would continue the shelling of YPG positions in northern Syria.[114]
19 February
Turkish artillery units shelled again PYD targets in northern Syria.[115]
