Locals know it as the home where the Pritchard family was terrorised by the angry spirit of a 16th-Century monk.
And to the steady stream of ghost-hunters who make the pilgrimage to the West Yorkshire town, it is the site of “the most violent poltergeist haunting in Europe”.
Now, as a British film about the haunting hits UK cinemas, locals say the Black Monk of Pontefract is beginning to stir again.
Next-door neighbour Carol Fieldhouse, 54, said things started to take a sinister turn three months ago.
She didn’t know the former owner Philip Pritchard had just sold the long-empty property to film producer Bil Bungay.
“I saw Philip in the front, tidying up the garden,” she said.
“I went out and asked him if he’d sold it to one of his nephews. I thought it must have been one of them because I knew they were deaf and I’d heard the telly blasting out all night.
“He said ‘There’s no TV in there. It’s empty’. Then he turned pale and went ‘God, it’s started again’. I haven’t seen him since.”
But a blaring TV is nothing compared to what Philip, sister Diane, dad Joe and mum Jean experienced 40 years ago.
There were sheets torn off beds, photos slashed and gloves floating as if conducting music.
The most shocking incident saw 12-year-old Diana dragged upstairs by an invisible pair of hands clutching at her throat.
An author later identified the spook as a monk hung for the rape and murder of a girl during the reign of Henry VIII. Intriguingly, the Pritchards’ semi is said to have been built next to the site of the gallows.
The events are recreated in director Pat Holden’s new horror film When The Lights Went Out. Jean Pritchard was Holden’s aunt and he witnessed many of the incidents first hand.
He says the family feared the flick could anger the ghost. “They said, ‘If you make a film we don’t want this to happen again’,” he said.
To persuade them to help him with his research for the movie, he changed their names and used a studio in Huddersfield as the house.
But producer Bungay couldn’t resist when he found out No.30 was up for sale.
And he has already witnessed strange goings-on. While the film premiered in London, Bil organised a screening in the house for cast, crew and two fearless competition winners.
There, several people reported their mobile phones suddenly running out of battery.
Tasha Connor, 15, who plays Diane, admitted feeling “freaked out” at the screening.
And neighbour Carol was so disturbed byother odd incidents since that she held a séance in which the Black Monk materialised.
“He doesn’t like it that someone has moved in,” she said. “He says he will have them gone in 12 months.”
