Syri is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 220.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden proberen neutraal te blijven in de oorlog tussen de regering en de rebellen, er zijn echter wel verschillende gevechten geweest tussen rebellen waaronder FSA + Al Nusra (Al Qaida) en de Koerden. Ook hebben er tussen het NDF/SAA en de Koerden zich wat incidenten voor gedaan. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier. Turkije is tegen de Koerdische autonomie en steunt daarom ISIS en Al Qaida tegen ze.

IS(IS) - wahabitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syri opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch wordt onthoofd door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering, de Koerden als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.
Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordani, Libi, VAE, Saudi-Arabi en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syri met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary, 24, who has previously posed with a severed head and declared war on the West, is thought to have disguised himself as a refugee and made his escape during the chaos of the Isis retreat from Tal Abyad near the Turkey-Syria border last month.
He is being hunted both by British security services and his former Isis colleagues, who are known to kill deserters as traitors, the Sunday Telegraph reported.
Bary, a former rapper who was raised in a 1m council home in Maida Vale, west London, before travelling to fight in Syria in 2013, appears to be the latest of a series of British jihadists to have become disenchanted with life fighting for Isis.
Recent US bombing raids, and the grim realities of life in a war zone, have reportedly seen dozens of British jihadists flee to Turkey. There they exist in limbo, facing prosecution if they return to Britain.
Raffaello Pantucci, director of international security studies at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a think-tank engaged in defence and security research, told The Independent: “He’s gone very quiet on social media. If he’s having difficulty getting online that may be because he’s on the run. I had been tracking him across Facebook and Twitter, but that’s gone very quiet now.
“We know there are people who are not having a great time with Isis and trying to leave. He could be one of them. I have noticed this is something which has been happening for a little while.
“I don’t know if it’s new: people leaving the group or getting disillusioned. It is interesting if it’s someone as high-profile as him, someone who has been quite involved and prominent.”
Mr Pantucci added that for any of those Britons stranded in Syria, particularly those with a higher profile, it would prove very difficult to find their way home under the radar with such tight restrictions now in place on British borders.
Last September Peter Neumann, director of The International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR), said he believed as many as 20 per cent of British jihadists could be trying to find a way out. He had been personally approached by one, who represented 30 others, about wanting to come home.
“The people we have been talking to want to quit, but feel trapped because all the Government is talking about is locking them up for 30 years,” he said at the time.
“The people who want to change their minds could become very powerful spokesmen who could show the difference between the reality on the ground and the propaganda Isis is putting out.”
Before he left Britain, Bary was a rising rapper whose tracks were played on BBC radio. He was raised in a Maida Vale council home, not far from the family home of Mohammed Emwazi, the jihadist executioner known as Jihadi John.
Last year, before Emwazi was unmasked, several newspapers inaccurately speculated that Bary may have been Jihadi John himself.
Bary is the latest in a string of British jihadists deserting their terrorist causes in the Middle East, including Imran Khawaja, who was imprisoned for 12 years in February on his return to the UK after six months fighting in Syria.
The 27-year-old faked his own death to return home from a Syrian training camp after complaining of the conditions he faced, including a lack of toiletries, cocoa butter and condoms.
Last October, the family of Muhammad Mehdi Hassan, who died fighting for Isis, blamed the Government for making it too difficult for Britons to return home.
The 20-year-old was said to be desperate to escape Syria, but was scared of repercussions in his home city of Portsmouth. His family said Hassan, and other fighters, would return to their homes if the threat of being jailed wasn’t hanging over them.

On Monday morning, the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah overwhelmed the Islamist rebel militias along Al-Sultani Street, killing a confirmed 26 enemy combatants, while sustaining 8 casualties (2 soldiers from Hezbollah and 6 soldiers from the 63rd Brigade) of their own during this intense battle southeast of the city-center.
Finally, after more than three hours of firefights on Al-Sultani Street, the militants from Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Jabhat Al-Nusra withdrew from the buildings encompassing the street and took-up their new positions at the Al-Houda Mosque, which is also located at an intersection that leads to Jamal ‘Abdel-Nasser Street.
To conclude the day, the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah broke-through Jabhat Al-Nusra’s frontline defenses at the Al-Houda Mosque and imposed complete control over the religious building before nightfall dissipated the fighting.
The Islamist rebels are now wedged from the eastern and western flanks, making it very difficult to lift this siege imposed by the Syrian Armed Forces and Hezbollah.
If the Islamist rebels can somehow recapture the Al-Zalah Neighborhood in southern Al-Zabadani, then they can lift the siege and retreat through the opening at the southern flank in order to take-up their positions in the town of Madaya.

In het verleden had Iran veel macht in de regio. "Dat was tot eind jaren 70. Daarvoor was het land eigenlijk een soort vazalstaat van de VS en het Westen. Iran was de politieagent van de regio en had olie en gas." Na de revolutie waarbij de Iraanse geestelijke Khomeini aan de macht kwam, veranderde dat en door het atoomprogramma belandde Iran op een zijspoor.

Nu er een akkoord is met het sjiitische Iran kan het land op termijn een grote rol gaan spelen in de regio, zegt Hendriks. Dat kan een oplossing bieden voor de oorlog in Syri, het conflict in Isral en de problemen met de soennitische terreurbeweging IS.
'Iran kan bondgenoot worden in strijd tegen IS'
Nu er een akkoord is kan Iran meewerken tegen een van de belangrijkste problemen in de regio; de strijd tegen Islamitische Staat, zegt Midden- Oostendeskundige Bertus Hendriks.
"IS vormt een bedreiging voor Iran, want de groepering is sterk anti-sjiitisch. Iran is er zeer in genteresseerd om de terreurbeweging te vernietigen en kan daarin een bondgenoot worden van het Westen."
Iran steunde ook de sjiitische Hezbollahpartij in zijn strijd tegen Isral. Dat deden ze samen met de Syrische president Assad. Maar de rol van Assad en Hezbollah is sterk verzwakt. Daarom kunnen de Iranirs wel eens besluiten om de steun aan Hezbollah en Assad te beindigen, zegt Hendriks. Dat kan leiden tot de val van de Syrische president en biedt openingen in het conflict tussen de Palestijnen en Isral.
Economische mogelijkheden
Het akkoord biedt ook mogelijkheden voor het Westen. "Handelsbeperkingen kunnen verdwijnen waardoor oliemaatschappijen daar weer gaan investeren. Het land is door de sancties verarmd. Ze hebben er veel producten nodig, wat weer voor afzet zorgt voor andere bedrijven."

How the Washington Post got Taken in by Syria’s Taliban
quote:Making alliances of convenience is a perennial temptation in Washington, where policy-makers often have more ambition than ethics or common sense.
Thus, the Washington Post just published a slick op-ed by a representative of the Islamic Movement of Syrian Free Men (Ahrar al-Sham) claiming that the group is “moderate” and not “extremist.” The implication is that the US should feel comfortable allying with this Salafi Jihadi group.
The Free Men want to see Syria become what they call an Islamic state, just as the Taliban wanted Afghanistan to be their idea of an Islamic state. Islam is an old and diverse religious tradition, but these people don’t mean any old “Islam.” They have a rigid fundamentalist interpretation of it that makes no room for people who disagree with them. They say they will accept some sort of pluralism, but this is frankly a lie and can be shown to be so.
The Free Men are closely allied with the open al-Qaeda affiliate, the Support Front (Jabhat al-Nusra). This is not a mere alliance of convenience. They have formed joint operation offices. They coordinate closely militarily. They have a common rubric in Idlib Province of the Army of Conquest (Jaysh al-Fath).
When the two groups of holy warriors and their allies took over the city of Idlib this summer, they conquered 18 villages north of that city largely inhabited by members of the esoteric Shiite Druze religion. The Free Men leadership gave control of the Druze villages to al-Qaeda, which promptly began stealing their property and killing them when they objected. Some 23 were massacred.
The al-Qaeda oppression of the Druze, enabled by the Free Men, tempted many members of that group to get off the fence and support the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad. In Israel, members of the Druze minority pressured the Israeli government to attack al-Qaeda so as to protect the Syrian Druze. (Israel appears to have an alliance of convenience with al-Qaeda in the Golan Heights against their common foe, the Lebanese Hizbullah, and brings wounded anti-regime fighters fighters over the border into Israel for treatment. Druze in the Israeli-held Golan rioted and attacked these wounded jihadis recently, alleging that the injure who were being transported in an Israeli ambulance were al-Qaeda).
Note that the Free Men did not have to give the Druze in Idlib Province to al-Qaeda. They could have administered that territory themselves. That they thought al-Qaeda a suitable overlord for a group viewed by hard line Salafis as unbelievers and idolators shows that they just don’t care about human rights. They want a Salafi , Taliban-style Islamic state. We know exactly what happened to Shiite Hazara under the Taliban in Afghanistan. They were massacred.
If the Free Men are so moderate, they would renounce their close alliance with al-Qaeda and stop coddling the terrorists, who report directly to Ayman al-Zawahiri, a mastermind of the attacks on New York and Washington in 2001. That this intertwining of the Free Men with al-Qaeda is all right with the Washington Post is just baffling.
Another hint at the Free Men’s lack of pluralism is their hatred for the leftist Kurds who have fought so effectively against Daesh:
The Free Men, in alliance with al-Qaeda, made an incursion in late May into the Kurdish-majority Shaykh Mahmoud District of Aleppo, trading live fire with the YPG leftist Kurdish militia. A truce was later worked out.
One of the founders of the Free Men was Hasan Aboud, who in 2013 told an Egyptian newspaper that secularism would not be allowed and tried to assure its readers that “the rejection of democracy” does not mean domination, but rather consultation. Aboud was killed in fall of 2014, but there is no reason to think the organization has changed its mind about those evil secularists or about the undesirability of doing more than “consulting” with the governed.
The weasel words in the WaPo op-ed notwithstanding, just a month and a half ago, Sam Heller notes,
“On 26 May, Ahrar al-Sham’s chief shari’ah officer “Abu Muhammad al-Sadeq” issued a treatise on Twitter titled “And the Idol Has Shattered” – the “idol,” in this case, being democracy. Drawing on Algeria and Egypt’s aborted democratic experiments, Abu Muhammad argued that democracy is, in real practice, a trap for would-be Islamist participants.”
So I think we know what sort of society the Free Men want to build in Syria. It is apparently one where al-Qaeda has a free hand with minorities and there is no democracy, and the Kurdish socialist, feminist experiment is crushed. I think we also know what they have in store for Syria’s women.
All that said, the Free Men are not al-Qaeda or Daesh (ISIS, ISIL). Indeed, they expelled fighters who would not take on Daesh and have had several battles with it. They don’t go in for mass beheadings or anything, and they did try to persuade al-Qaeda not to massacre the Druze (though they did nothing to stop the Support Front from just, like stealing their property). And, they don’t want to blow stuff up in the West– they have local, Syrian territorial ambitions.
But in all these ways they resemble the Afghan Taliban, who also were not international terrorists, who also just wanted an Islamic state in their own country, and who also had a soft spot for al-Qaeda, with which they were allied.
The Free Men are counting on Washington being willing to overlook their tight entanglement with al-Qaeda and their anti-democratic, sectarian Sunni theocratic aspirations because they might be useful in fighting Daesh as well as in overthrowing the Syrian regime.
We have seen this movie before, in the Reagan administration in the 1980s, when the US allied with the Muslim extreme right, groups like Gulbudin Hikmatyar’s so-called Islamic Party (Hizb-i Islam) against the Afghan socialists. Although CIA station chief in Islamabad Milt Bearden denied that the US directly trained or funded the Arab volunteers who fought alongside Hikmatyar and who were grouped by Usama Bin Laden under the Office of Services, there isn’t any doubt that CIA tradecraft was communicated to al-Qaeda by American allies. That knowledge of cell formation, avoidance of surveillance, and planning of covert operations, was then deployed against the United States itself by al-Qaeda on September 11, 2001.

Assad loves the Iran deal

Dat verklaart Human Rights Watch (HRW) woensdag.
Volgens die organisatie stierven in juni enkele tieners onder de achttien jaar aan het front.
Volgens HRW hebben de Koerden, die het noorden van Syri deels onder controle hebben, in juni vorig jaar hun handtekening gezet onder een afspraak dat alle kinderen binnen een maand zouden worden gedemobiliseerd en dat er geen militairen onder de achttien jaar zouden worden ingezet.
Een maand later had YPG 149 kinderen uit het leger gehaald, maar volgens HRW worden er inmiddels weer kinderen aan het front ingezet. De organisatie roept de Koerden op daarmee te stoppen.

"De Koerden strijden dan wel tegen groepen zoals Islamitische Staat, die de wetten van de oorlogsvoering aan hun laars lappen, maar dat is geen excuus om misstanden bij hun eigen troepen te tolereren", zegt adviseur Fred Abrahams van HRW.
In een bekendmaking voert HRW onder andere een vader op die beweert dat de vrouwentak van YPG zijn veertienjarige dochter van school heeft meegenomen om in Syri te vechten.

De FSA heeft meer kindsoldaten dan ISIS, NUsra en YPG bij elkaar.....
Komt omdat de minimale leeftijd bij de YPG voor toetreding 16 is, dus dan kan je een groot deel op papier al wegzetten als 'kindsoldaten'. In de praktijk kan je natuurlijk niet meer echt van 'kinderen' spreken, daarbij ze zijn getraind en weten wat ze doen.
Bij een kindsoldaat denk ik meer aan jongetjes van 10-12 die met een AK lopen.
