quote:Hollywood's Jihadi Hunter: The only action this British actor has seen is in movies. But here he is in the killing fields of the deadly war on IS. So is he a hero or a fool? Read his amazing story.... and you decide
Actor Michael Enright looks every inch the steely Hollywood tough guy, clad in combat fatigues with an AK-47 slung across his shoulder.
But this British veteran of countless movies – including Pirates Of The Caribbean alongside Johnny Depp, and Knight And Day with Tom Cruise – is no longer just playing a role as he embarks on the fight of his life.
He says he has turned his back on the glamour of Tinseltown to join the desperate fight against the terrorists of Islamic State, propelled into real-life action by their barbaric slaughter of Western hostages.
Now, instead of mixing with A-listers such as Cruise and Anne Hathaway at Hollywood parties, 51-year-old Enright, who has no military background, sleeps in the Syrian mountains, his Kalashnikov rifle constantly at his side.
And he knows that the perilous journey he made to join the rag-tag, poorly-equipped YPG Kurdish rebels in the Sinjar mountains of northern Syria might be a one-way ticket.
His determination to try to halt the murderous march of IS across Iraq and Syria began to crystalise after the beheading of American journalist James Foley last August by the notorious British killer Jihadi John.
He is only too aware that, were he to fall into IS hands, he could suffer a similar fate to Foley and tragic British hostages David Haines and Alan Henning, who were both decapitated and had their deaths recorded in horrific videos.
In Syria, it is common knowledge that Islamic State are prepared to pay 65,000 ($100,000) for a Western hostage. However, Enright has a contingency plan, which he outlined with icy calmness: ‘If I’m about to get caught, then you know, we keep one bullet back for ourselves.’
Talking to The Mail on Sunday by mobile phone from Syria, Enright, who was born in Manchester, revealed his determination to stand up to IS. He said: ‘It’s got to a point where I just want to absolutely annihilate them, and kill them on sight.’
He added: ‘IS are just an abomination. This is a call to humanity, it’s a call to everybody, to do whatever we can, in whatever way we can.’
Enright has been in Syria for more than two months, receiving basic training from the YPG after risking his life to reach them.
He wanted to join President George W Bush’s war against terror after 9/11 in 2001, and planned to enlist in the US Army back then before being talked out of it by friends.
But 14 years on, the final straw for him came in January when he saw the IS video of Jordanian pilot Muath Al-Kassasbeh being burned to death.
He keeps the gruesome footage on his mobile phone and watches it whenever his zeal to fight wanes.
The actor said that he has endured punishing physical training with the YPG, as well as learning how to assemble and dismantle a Kalashnikov blindfolded, so that he can do it in the dead of night on the front line.
Like all other rebel fighters, he sleeps in full uniform on a mat on the floor with his loaded rifle next to him, in case of an attack. ‘You sleep in your uniform, you wear it 24 hours a day,’ he said. ‘You’ll sleep next to your Kalashnikov. I call mine Olga, because she’s Romanian. It’s my constant companion, so I gave her a name.’
Enright has been a journeyman actor from the age of 16. After growing up in the deprived Moss Side area of Manchester, he received his big break when he won a place in a children’s pantomime at Butlin’s in Skegness, Lincolnshire.
Deciding that acting was his future, he made two trips to the US to try out for roles and fell in love with the country. When he was 19, he moved to Hollywood permanently. His most recent screen work includes parts in the TV action series, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D

quote:Head of the western-backed Syrian opposition group known as Dissidents Alliance, Khaled Khoja, disclosed that Saudi Arabia and Turkey have provided wide military backup for the Al-Nusra Front to help the terrorist group make advances in Idlib and Dara’a provinces.
“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his recent visit to Riyadh had discussed with Al Saud officials the Saudi and Turkish help to the Al-Nusra Front,” Khoja said.
On Friday, the American defense officials said at least 400 US military trainers are ready in Turkey and Jordan to start training of over 3,000 anti-Syria militants this week to join fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
The United States will also provide the militants with weapons, trucks and tactical radios for their communication.
On Monday, Arab media sources revealed that Ankara has intensified attempts to unite different terrorist groups to coordinate their plots and actions against Damascus.
Al-Hayat daily reported that Turkey is endeavoring to gather the dissident and terrorist groups, including the so-called Ahrar al-Sham Movement and Jeish al-Islam, to unite them against the Syrian people and government.
This is while the so-called Filaq al-Sham terrorist group is due to emerge with Ahrar al-Sham Movement in the next few hours.
According to the report, Turkey’s move is in line with implementing its plot to gather 70,000 terrorists in the Northern and Central parts of Syria as well as the areas near Damascus.
Earlier media reports also said that Washington and Ankara will start training 15,000 armed men in the coming days to be sent to Syria under the guise of campaign against ISIL.
“Although the US and Turkey claim that they want to train the Syrian opposition fighters to fight the ISIL, they are actually going to be sent to the country to combat government forces and the army,” senior military analyst Mohamed al-Hasoun said.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut avuşoğlu said that the US-led program will start on May 9, adding that the US and Turkey are still insisting on their stance that Syria should be run in the absence of Bashar Assad.
US officials have said they plan to train about 5,000 Syrian fighters a year for three years as part of a campaign against Islamic State forces in Iraq and Syria, while US Vice-President Joe Biden said a few months ago that Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey that are the main US allies in the region are behind the creation of the terrorist groups, specially the ISIL, in the region.
Details on the training — due to take place in Turkey, Jordan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia — have been scant, although it had previously been planned to start this month.
Last Saturday, a Syrian dissident leader said that the US and Turkey’s support and financial aids to the Takfiri terrorists in Syria have made reaching a political solution to the problems in the Arab country difficult.
“The attacks of the militant groups in Northern Syria show that those regimes that are supporting them in the region and the world do not care for political solution to the Syrian crisis and are still after meeting their interests in Syria without caring about the Syrian nation and government’s fate,” Adel Naeesah, a member of National Change and Freedom Front’s Political Office, told FNA.
Noting that the militants’ attacks against Syria have intensified concurrent with the endorsement of an agreement between Ankara and Washington over training the militias, he said, “This shows that the plots to destroy Syria are still in place and the US and Turkish governments don’t care for the political solution demanded by the Syrians.”
In late April, a ranking Takfiri militant disclosed that Ankara, Riyadh and Doha masterminded and led the terrorists’ recent attack on a strategic region in Idlib countryside in Northwestern Syria, adding that they have been preparing militants and equipment for the assault since one month ago.
“Turkey, backed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, has sent over 5,000 foreign-backed terrorists to Syria through its borders to help the Al-Nusra Front terrorist group to attack Jisr al-Shaghour in Idlib,” a source close to Ahrar al-Sham Takfiri group said.
Senior Iraqi and Syrian officials have repeatedly criticized Turkey over links to the militants, including Turkish involvement in buying oil from both the ISIL and al-Nusra Front, and providing a corridor for thousands of terrorists to get into Syria.
A UN report said in December that Turkey is being used as a main route for smuggling weapons to terrorist groups operating in Iraq and Syria.
Militant groups such as the ISIL and the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front in Iraq and Syria have been receiving weapons and equipment smuggled “primarily by routes that run through Turkey”, read a report by the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Implementation Monitoring Team.
Syria has been gripped by deadly unrest since March 2011. More than 222,000 people have been killed in the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The United States and its regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside the country.
