In het grensgebied tussen Syri� en Libanon zijn dinsdag felle gevechten uitgebroken tussen de militante groeperingen al-Nusra en Hezbollah.

Volgens Hezbollah zijn daarbij minstens twaalf doden gevallen aan de kant van al-Nusra. Over slachtoffers in de eigen gelederen zei de sjiitische Libanese organisatie niets.

Op ongeveer 50 kilometer van de grens in Oost-Libanon werd over en weer geschoten, zei een bron binnen het Libanese veiligheidsapparaat.

Het geweld uit Syri� is vaker overgeslagen naar het kleine buurland Libanon. Strijders van Hezbollah vechten in Syri� mee aan de kant van president Bashar al-Assad. De soennitische militanten van al-Nusra willen hem juist ten val brengen.

Al-Nusra staat bekend als het Syrische 'filiaal' van terreurorganisatie al-Qaeda.

The U.S. military denied Sunday a report that strikes led by Washington had killed at least 52 civilians in northern Syria earlier this week, saying those killed were actually fighters.

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor director Rami Abdel Rahman had told AFP that seven children were among the dead from U.S.-led coalition strikes overnight Thursday into Friday on the village of Birmahle in Aleppo province.

He had warned the toll could rise as rescuers were battling to save 13 people trapped under rubble.

"U.S. Central Command can confirm that Coalition forces conducted airstrikes in the vicinity of Birmahle, Syria, on April 30, destroying several ISIL fighting positions and striking more than 50 ISIL fighters," command spokesman Major Curt Kellogg said in a statement, using an acronym by which ISIS is also known.

"We currently have no indication that any civilians were killed in these strikes."

Kurdish militiamen and Syrian rebel fighters were clashing with ISIS fighters in a town roughly one mile (two kilometers) away from Birmahle at the time of the strikes.

"Prior to the airstrikes, Kurdish forces, who held the town before leaving after being attacked by ISIL, reported there were no civilians present in that location and that there had not been any civilians present for two weeks prior to the Coalition airstrikes," Kellogg said.

"We have significant mitigation measures in place within the targeting process and during the conduct of operations to reduce the potential risks of collateral damage and civilian casualties.

"We work extremely hard to be precise in the application of our airstrikes and take all allegations of civilian casualties very seriously."

Abdel Rahman had indicated that the village is inhabited by civilians only with no ISIS presence.

Air strikes by the international coalition have supported Kurdish militias fighting ISIS in Aleppo province, most notably in the flashpoint border town of Kobane, which is near Birmahle.

Backed by the strikes, Kurdish fighters drove fighters out of Kobane in January.

A senior Hezbollah official says the Lebanese resistance movement will not allow the ISIL Takfiri militants to achieve their goals.

Hezbollah’s Deputy Secretary General Sheikh Naeem Qassem said on Tuesday that fighters belonging to the Lebanese resistance movement are preparing for a battle to purge the strategic region of Qalamoun of ISIL militants.

“In any case, the Qalamoun battle is coming, and it has already stuck its neck out, proving once again that the Takfiris are unable to expand as they wish,” the Beirut-based English-language newspaper Daily Star quoted Qassem as saying.

According to security sources, Syrian army forces along with Hezbollah fighters are preparing for a battle to gain full control of the eastern Lebanon mountain range. Reports also say that the military arrangements for the battle for the eastern mountain range near the border with Syria have almost finished.

The sources said that the Syrian army has brought a number of rocket launchers, artillery batteries and cannons and has deployed them in strategic areas and hills in the Syrian town of Zabadani, close to the border with Lebanon.

“This battle is the battle of protecting Lebanese villages and prevents Takfiris from expanding and achieving their goals,” the senior Hezbollah official said.

He further held certain countries, particularly the US, responsible for the ongoing crisis in Syria, saying, “[They are] busy with other things, and want to postpone the political solution in Syria for a year or two if not more.”

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 222,000 people, according to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says over 7.2 million people have been internally displaced, and more than 3 million fled the country.

Over the past months, Lebanon has witnessed an increase of militant activity on the border with Syria, suffering from attacks by al-Qaeda-affiliated militants as well as Takfiri ISIL terrorists.
