Syri is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

One of the doctors, Dr Zaher Sahloul of the Syrian American Medical Society, spoke about the treatment of victims of a chlorine attack in March on Sarmin, near Idlib, in northwest Syria:
Doctors and nurses were struggling to treat them. They all had respiratory symptoms, they had coughs, they had wheezing, some of them had fluid in their lungs.
Another doctor, Mohamed Tennari, said:
The patients had a severe shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, irritation of the throat and eyes, vomiting and foaming … everyone smelled bleach odour in the air and heard the sounds of helicopters hovering in the skies.
The people in my city [Idlib] and in Syria expect the Security Council to act. We have been dying every day from missiles and barrel bombs — and now toxic agents. Our message to the international community is: please stop this in Syria.
US Ambassador Samantha Power told reporters that members became “very, very emotional” while watching the video: “If there was a dry eye in the room, I didn’t see it.”
Washington has led the effort to condemn the regime for the chemical attacks, which most recently have come through chlorine canisters in barrel bombs. Power said that the Council will now seek to identify those behind the attacks and ensure they face justice.
Power reiterated, “All the evidence shows that [the attacks] come from helicopters — only the Assad regime has helicopters.”
On March 6, the Council passed a resolution expressing “extreme concern” about the attacks and authorizing “Chapter 7″ measures, such as economic restrictions, against anyone found responsible for further use of chemical weapons. However, Russia — a key supporter of the Assad regime — is likely to block any action.
The Assad regime was able to avoid punishment, including military intervention, after its sarin attacks in August 2013 killed close to 2,000 people in the East Ghouta area near Damascus. It promised to hand all chemical weapons stocks for destruction.
However, because of its common domestic uses, chlorine is not classified as a chemical weapon.
Since spring 2014, Syrian warplanes have been accused of using chlorine on a number of occasions in Idlib and Hama Provinces. The Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons found “strong evidence” that helicopters dropped canisters in March and April 2014, killing at least 14 people and wounding hundreds, and again in August.

This week, Human Rights Watch reported on the evidence indicating the regime’s dropping of chlorine last month near Idlib on up to seven occasions, trying to check a rebel advance that eventually took the provincial capital. Six members of a family, including three children, died and more than 100 people were wounded.

"The response from the Kurdish officials was positive," the minister said. "They told me their project (for self-rule) could be revised and altered since all the projects are designed to find a solution within the sovereign state of Syria."
With a population exceeding 1 million, Rojava is currently a Kurdish administrated region divided into three cantons. The PYD and its armed wing the Peoples' Protection Unit (YPG) are the authorities in the enclave.
PYD has denied links with the Syrian regime, though no clashes have taken place between them and the Syrian army since the uprising began in 2011.
"Qamishloo is Syrian soil," Haidar said, referring to the Syrian city in Rojava where his meeting took place. "My trip was an effort to alleviate any danger and to repair bridges between the Syrian leadership and the people of this area more profoundly," he said.
Regarding Kurdish flags hoisted at checkpoints in Rojava, the minister said his government had no objection as long as "everything remains within a united Syria."
Haidar said he had also been in talks with other groups in the region, including the Christians and the Arabs of the region.

Four civilians injured in terrorist mortar attack in Labeen village in Sweidaquote:Residents of the ancient Syrian town of Ma’lula celebrated the first anniversary of their town’s liberation from the al-Qaeda-linked Takfiri militants, Press TV reports.
The residents of Ma’lula were able to return to their homes in April last year, after the Syrian army forces and Hezbollah fighters cleared the town, which is home to the region’s oldest Christian communities.
“Al-Nusra Front’s militants were burning tires and would throw them over our homes. They also kidnapped our sons, but the Syrian army got us out of the town and removed elders by tanks. They then liberated the town and we got back here on April 10, 2014,” Ma’lula resident Fadel Semaan said.
Residents say the militants killed many people in the area and destroyed many of its ancient Islamic and Christian religious structures.
Semaan added that the Takfiri terrorists burned a church in the town and stole valuable items inside.
“Terrorists deprived Ma’lula from its visitors, they destroyed our mosques and churches, and displaced our families,” Ma’lula official Elias Habib said.
The al-Nusra Front militants attacked Ma’lula in September 2013, forcing many of its 5,000 residents to flee.
The town is of strategic significance to militants who have been trying to gain control over the Syrian capital, Damascus. It is also home to Mar Sarkis and Mar Takla, two of the oldest surviving monasteries in Syria.
Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis in March 2011. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.

Terrorist attacks kill 4 civilians in Aleppo and Hama, injure 9 near Damascus
quote:Two civilians were killed on Tuesday as a rocket fired by terrorists hit Bab al-Faraj in the city of Aleppo.
Ten other civilians were reported injured by the attack.
Meanwhile, terrorists fired several mortar shells at the direction of Harasta highway and al-Qaboun area near Damascus city.
Three mortar shells smashed into al-Bairouni Hospital for Tumors in Harasta area, leaving a worker injured, according to the Police.
Eight more civilians were injured by shells which hit a company in the Industrial al-Qaboun Area, the Police added in a statement to SANA.
Later, terrorists detonated an explosive device in Salamiyeh area in the central Hama province, killing two civilians.
The explosive device was planted at the entrance of al-Amiyeh village on the road linking Salamiyeh and Raqqa province to the northeast of Syria.
The attack targeted a car that was passing on the road and left a third civilian was also injured in the blast, according to the Police.

A legion of foreign fighters who bravely joined the Kurdish forces battling militants loyal to the Islamic State have posed for photographs in Syria.
Showing off their tattoos, play fighting with one another and relaxing in a camp, the international fighting force appear incredibly relaxed - despite fighting on the frontline against the terror group.
Dozens of fighters - many of them ex-soldiers in the British and America armies - have volunteered to join Kurdish troops battling ISIS in Iraq and Syria in recent months. As many of the Kurdish fighters do not speak English, the foreign soldiers usually form new English-language regiments.

But Islamic State remains a danger, said Redur Xelil, YPG spokesman. Its targets include the provincial capital, Hasaka city, and the town of Tel Tamr, to the northwest. Islamic State is still believed to be holding some 200 Assyrian Christians abducted in February from villages near Tel Tamr.
"South of Hasaka there are areas that Daesh controls entirely. There is a big Daesh mobilization outside the city, and there are big fears of an attack on Hasaka city," Xelil said in an interview from the city of Qamishli via Skype.
Daesh is an Arabic name for Islamic State.
For now, the Islamic State priority is Tel Tamr, where it aims to cut a YPG supply route, he added. Islamic State was "trying to take big cities, to take the battle into cities" to mark it harder for the U.S.-led alliance to hit it, he said.
Hasaka is home to many Syrians who have fled areas further west, including the country's second city Aleppo, he added.
The Syrian Observatory, which monitors the Syrian civil war, reports daily clashes between the YPG and Islamic State fighters near Tel Tamr, and clashes between the Syrian military and Islamic State in areas west and east of Hasaka city.
AIR STRIKES
The YPG has emerged as the only partner for the U.S.-led alliance bombing Islamic State in Syria. But its effectiveness is greatly diminished beyond areas where the Kurds have set up autonomous zones since Syria's conflict erupted in 2011.
The United States, rejecting any partnership with President Bashar al-Assad against Islamic State, is about to launch a program to train and equip members of the mainstream Syrian opposition in order to fight the jihadists elsewhere.
Xelil said the YPG had not been consulted on the program, adding that its requests for military supplies remained unmet.
Support for the YPG is a complicated issue for Western states because of the concerns of NATO member Turkey, which is worried about separatism among its own Kurdish population.
Since driving Islamic State from Kobani in January, the YPG has secured a large area around the town, including villages within the provincial boundaries of Raqqa - Islamic State's de facto capital.
Islamic State is the single biggest insurgent group in Syria, controlling areas in the east and the north.
In recent weeks, it has been mounting attacks well beyond those strongholds, targeting both insurgent- and government-held areas closer to Syria's main cities in the west.
Xelil said Islamist State had adapted to the air strikes. They were digging trenches and moving fighters and equipment in small convoys.
"They have found ways to deal with this situation, moving from area to area in a hidden way, or at times when there are no planes, either surveillance or bombers," he said."
"The Daesh threat will continue, all the while it dominates wide areas where it has supporters."

Nederlandse IS-strijdsters gebruiken hun thuisland om te bevallen en vertrekken daarna stilletjes met hun kind opnieuw naar de terreurstaat IS. Dat bevestigt de AIVD aan AD.nl.
Volgens de Algemene Inlichtingen- en Veiligheidsdienst (AIVD) gaat het om verschillende concrete gevallen. De strijdsters kiezen voor een 'thuisbevalling', vanwege de slechte medische situatie in de Islamitische Staat.
Ruim veertig Nederlandse vrouwen, onder wie 15- en 16-jarige meiden, wonen momenteel in Syri en Irak. ,,Maar niet alle vrouwen daarvan zijn zwanger en keren terug", stelt een woordvoerder van de AIVD. ,,Het gaat niet om hordes vrouwen."
Een groot deel van de kinderen wordt volgens de AIVD in 'het kalifaat' geboren. ,,Terugkeren naar Nederland is ontzettend lastig", stelt de AIVD-woordvoerder. ,,De slechte situatie daar om te bevallen en de zorgen die daarbij spelen zijn voor zwangere vrouwen genoeg reden om het wel te proberen."
Er zijn onvoldoende mogelijkheden om deze moeders te beletten terug te keren. ,,Persoonlijk is dat frustrerend, maar er zijn grenzen aan de mogelijkheden hen te stoppen of te straffen. Met een auto of toeristenvlucht ben je zo weer in het kalifaat", aldus AIVD-chef Rob Bertholee tegen De Telegraaf.

Kaplan said it is the AKP that is making use of the issue as a matter of politics. Kaplan said they never play politics over human life and the death of their children, adding that it is the morality of the AKP not the DBP, recalling the attempted provocation by the AKP in Tendrek, Ağrı, where 15 soldiers were sent, with the intention that they be killed.
MEYADER representative Şkr Baytar also strongly reacted to the decision of the Ministry and said they will not accept the decision as martyrs are the red line of the Kurdish people, adding that the people will not step back in the face of the cruel policies of the AKP.
In the meantime, the prosecutor arrived at the Forensic Institute to start the procedure after the strong reactions of the people. The bodies of the YPG/YPJ fighters are expected to be taken in the coming hours and sent to Amed where they will be buried.

quote:The Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) foreign policy, which started out as “zero problems with neighbors” before shifting to a neo-Ottoman ground in 2011, has come with economic repercussions. The Turkish economy today is in the grips of grave economic woes, with unemployment reaching its highest level in 57 months.
According to the figures released by the Turkish Statistics Agency (TUIK) last week, the official unemployment rate has climbed to 11.3%, with women taking the heaviest blow. The rate translates to 3,259,000 jobless people, including 2,117,000 men and 1,142,000 women.
The TUIK figures, however, ignore a crucial factor that makes unemployment look lower than it actually is: the hopeless. People who have lost hope of finding a job and stopped looking for one are not factored in. Their number has reached 2,535,000, which, added to TUIK’s official figure, brings the total number of jobless to 5,794,000.
Over the past year, employers laid off 227,000 women, which represents a higher rate proportionally compared with men who lost their jobs.
Turkey’s population of people who could work aged 15 and over numbers 57,475,000, including 28,385,000 men and 29,090,000 women. Out of those men, 20 million participate in the labor market and 18 million are employed. The same figures stand at 8,702,000 and 7,559,000 for women, respectively. In other words, 21 million of the 29 million women who could be working in Turkey are not in the labor market, do not look for jobs or, even if they do, have no hope of finding one.
Over the past year, 228,000 out of the 18 million working men lost their jobs, compared with 227,000 out of 7.5 million working women. This means that unemployment has risen by 0.8% among men and 1.5% among women, reaching 13.1%. Turkish employers are clearly more inclined and willing to lay off women.
With millions of women already out of the labor market, the government has introduced programs encouraging women to pull out further from social and economic life or cajoling them into staying home. These programs include financial incentives for early marriages, targeting university students among others, and for women who bear at least three children.
Judging by the 21 million women who choose to stay home rather than work, one could suggest that this deliberate policy vis-a-vis women is bearing fruit to a certain degree. Additionally, university graduates represent the largest segment among jobless women and young people, which could be seen as a sign that educated women are not welcome in economic and social life. Meanwhile, women who manage to get jobs in the already strained labor market have emerged as the immediate victim of economic woes, which, unlike the claims of AKP officials and mouthpieces, are on the rise in many realms.
TUIK’s figures confirm that the AKP, after nearly 13 years in power, has brought the Turkish economy to the verge of a crisis, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan himself recently acknowledged. Though Erdogan spoke of a "temporary crisis," the indicators appear to signal a deep and durable downturn.
When the AKP came to power in 2002, the unemployment rate stood at 10.8% as Turkey still reeled from a grave economic crisis in 2001. Today’s rate of 11.3% has surpassed even that post-crisis figure.
A combination of factors have contributed to the current state of the economy, including internal political tensions, heavy political pressure on autonomous economic bodies, mostly by Erdogan, and Ankara’s foreign policy. As a result of the government’s foreign policy choices, especially vis-a-vis Egypt, Syria, Israel, Iraq and Libya, Turkey has seen its main trade routes blocked, with exports to many markets grinding to a halt.
The latest foreign trade statistics, issued March 31, revealed a continuing downward trend, with exports decreasing another 6%. In a telling example, Iraq, which had long been the largest importer of Turkish goods, was down to fourth place on the list.
On April 19, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), unveiled his party’s platform for the June 7 general elections, stressing that 17 million Turks had come to qualify as “poor” under the 13-year AKP rule, living on less than 200 Turkish lira ($76) per month. He underscored that the wealth of the richest 1% amounted to 54% of Turkey’s national income in 2014, up from 39% in 2002 when the AKP came to power.
The CHP leader blamed the new army of 17 million poor on flawed policies sharpening income disparity, adding that another 5 million people faced legal action for failing to repay credit card or loan debts.
In times of rising unemployment, both the number of people facing debt litigation and the amount of debts increase. Delinquent credit card debts, for instance, stand at 5.8 billion Turkish lira today, a 25-fold increase from 222 million Turkish lira in 2002.
Amid flawed foreign policies and domestic political tensions, Turkey’s industrial and agricultural output has declined, curbing exports. This, in turn, has fueled unemployment. Political tensions and global trends have led also to a sharp depreciation in the Turkish currency, which has slid 21% against the dollar over the past six months. This means higher energy costs and therefore a higher inflation for a country that relies heavily on foreign oil and gas supplies.
The nose-diving lira has amplified the risk and anticipation of crisis, given that Turkey’s banks and private sector have accumulated a considerable debt stock in foreign currency. Under these circumstances, layoffs have become the easiest way of cost-cutting, bringing the official jobless rate to a five-year high of 11.3%.
Economic growth slowed down to 2.9% at the end of 2014, compared with 6.9% in 2002. With the economy contracting some 50%, employment opportunities are decreasing, swelling the army of jobless. Women and young people stand out as the primary victim of the AKP’s economic policies.

In 1980 werd een opstand tegen president Hafez al-Assad, vader van de huidige president Bashar al-Assad, in de stad bloedig onderdrukt. Velen kwamen om.
De militairen van het regeringsleger die Jisr al-Shugour bezet hielden, zouden zich in de naburige provincie Hama hebben teruggetrokken.

Volgens mij leveren ze al een tijdje geen wapens meer, dat was vooral in het begin van de opstand. Ze hebben op radicale islamisten immers evenmin grip dus dit heeft geen zin zo.
