Syrië is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesië demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syrië. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syrië bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syrië, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

IS(IS) - soennitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syrië opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch is loopt kans onthoofd te worden door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.
Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordanië, Libië, VAE, Saudi-Arabië en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syrië met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

In a closed-door session on Thursday, the UN Security Council heard first-hand accounts from Syria’s doctors of the Assad regime’s chemical weapons attacks.
The Council also watched video of the doctors struggling to save children who were vomiting and choking.
One of the doctors, Dr Zaher Sahloul of the Syrian American Medical Society, spoke about the treatment of victims of a chlorine attack in March on Sarmin, near Idlib, in northwest Syria:
Doctors and nurses were struggling to treat them. They all had respiratory symptoms, they had coughs, they had wheezing, some of them had fluid in their lungs.
Another doctor, Mohamed Tennari, said:
The patients had a severe shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, irritation of the throat and eyes, vomiting and foaming … everyone smelled bleach odour in the air and heard the sounds of helicopters hovering in the skies.
The people in my city [Idlib] and in Syria expect the Security Council to act. We have been dying every day from missiles and barrel bombs — and now toxic agents. Our message to the international community is: please stop this in Syria.
US Ambassador Samantha Power told reporters that members became “very, very emotional” while watching the video: “If there was a dry eye in the room, I didn’t see it.”
Washington has led the effort to condemn the regime for the chemical attacks, which most recently have come through chlorine canisters in barrel bombs. Power said that the Council will now seek to identify those behind the attacks and ensure they face justice.
Power reiterated, “All the evidence shows that [the attacks] come from helicopters — only the Assad regime has helicopters.”
On March 6, the Council passed a resolution expressing “extreme concern” about the attacks and authorizing “Chapter 7″ measures, such as economic restrictions, against anyone found responsible for further use of chemical weapons. However, Russia — a key supporter of the Assad regime — is likely to block any action.
The Assad regime was able to avoid punishment, including military intervention, after its sarin attacks in August 2013 killed close to 2,000 people in the East Ghouta area near Damascus. It promised to hand all chemical weapons stocks for destruction.
However, because of its common domestic uses, chlorine is not classified as a chemical weapon.
Since spring 2014, Syrian warplanes have been accused of using chlorine on a number of occasions in Idlib and Hama Provinces. The Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons found “strong evidence” that helicopters dropped canisters in March and April 2014, killing at least 14 people and wounding hundreds, and again in August.

This week, Human Rights Watch reported on the evidence indicating the regime’s dropping of chlorine last month near Idlib on up to seven occasions, trying to check a rebel advance that eventually took the provincial capital. Six members of a family, including three children, died and more than 100 people were wounded.

Syrian minister: we are providing military, financial support to Kurdish fighters

Syrian reconciliation minister Ali Haidar told Rudaw he conducted "constructive talks" with Kurdish officials on a recent visit to Syrian Kurdistan, or Rojava, where he met with local officials.
"We have been providing all possible military assistance for the Kurdish forces in order to empower them against terror," Haidar said. "We are still providing them with our support in order to defeat the terrorist organizations," he added.
The Kurdish Democratic Unity Party (PYD) declared autonomy in the three regional cantons of Rojava last year. It has been locked in fierce fighting with the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), and categorically denies any collaboration with Damascus and regards the Syrian government as "oppressive."
Haidar said he assured his Kurdish hosts in Rojava of the Syrian government's support for talks about a range of issues, including the political status of Rojava "within Syria."
"The response from the Kurdish officials was positive," the minister said. "They told me their project (for self-rule) could be revised and altered since all the projects are designed to find a solution within the sovereign state of Syria."
With a population exceeding 1 million, Rojava is currently a Kurdish administrated region divided into three cantons. The PYD and its armed wing the Peoples' Protection Unit (YPG) are the authorities in the enclave.
PYD has denied links with the Syrian regime, though no clashes have taken place between them and the Syrian army since the uprising began in 2011.
"Qamishloo is Syrian soil," Haidar said, referring to the Syrian city in Rojava where his meeting took place. "My trip was an effort to alleviate any danger and to repair bridges between the Syrian leadership and the people of this area more profoundly," he said.
Regarding Kurdish flags hoisted at checkpoints in Rojava, the minister said his government had no objection as long as "everything remains within a united Syria."
Haidar said he had also been in talks with other groups in the region, including the Christians and the Arabs of the region.

Syria’s Ma’lula celebrates liberation anniversary
Four civilians injured in terrorist mortar attack in Labeen village in Sweidaquote:Residents of the ancient Syrian town of Ma’lula celebrated the first anniversary of their town’s liberation from the al-Qaeda-linked Takfiri militants, Press TV reports.
The residents of Ma’lula were able to return to their homes in April last year, after the Syrian army forces and Hezbollah fighters cleared the town, which is home to the region’s oldest Christian communities.
“Al-Nusra Front’s militants were burning tires and would throw them over our homes. They also kidnapped our sons, but the Syrian army got us out of the town and removed elders by tanks. They then liberated the town and we got back here on April 10, 2014,” Ma’lula resident Fadel Semaan said.
Residents say the militants killed many people in the area and destroyed many of its ancient Islamic and Christian religious structures.
Semaan added that the Takfiri terrorists burned a church in the town and stole valuable items inside.
“Terrorists deprived Ma’lula from its visitors, they destroyed our mosques and churches, and displaced our families,” Ma’lula official Elias Habib said.
The al-Nusra Front militants attacked Ma’lula in September 2013, forcing many of its 5,000 residents to flee.
The town is of strategic significance to militants who have been trying to gain control over the Syrian capital, Damascus. It is also home to Mar Sarkis and Mar Takla, two of the oldest surviving monasteries in Syria.
Over 3.8 million Syrians have left their country since the beginning of the crisis in March 2011. More than 7.2 million Syrians have also become internally displaced, according to the United Nations.

Terrorist attacks kill 4 civilians in Aleppo and Hama, injure 9 near Damascus
quote:Two civilians were killed on Tuesday as a rocket fired by terrorists hit Bab al-Faraj in the city of Aleppo.
Ten other civilians were reported injured by the attack.
Meanwhile, terrorists fired several mortar shells at the direction of Harasta highway and al-Qaboun area near Damascus city.
Three mortar shells smashed into al-Bairouni Hospital for Tumors in Harasta area, leaving a worker injured, according to the Police.
Eight more civilians were injured by shells which hit a company in the Industrial al-Qaboun Area, the Police added in a statement to SANA.
Later, terrorists detonated an explosive device in Salamiyeh area in the central Hama province, killing two civilians.
The explosive device was planted at the entrance of al-Amiyeh village on the road linking Salamiyeh and Raqqa province to the northeast of Syria.
The attack targeted a car that was passing on the road and left a third civilian was also injured in the blast, according to the Police.

quote:The Assad regime has suffered another military defeat in Syria’s conflict, this time in a failed offensive in Daraa Province in the south.
Syrian forces launched a major attack on Busra al-Harir on Tuesday, taking a corridor of five villages, trying to cut the highway between Daraa and Suweida Provinces, and launching hundreds of artillery shells into the town.
However, the attack was met by an effective resistance that killed scores of Syrian troops, mainly militiamen. The exact toll is not known, but activists on social media posted a series of photographs showing slain and captured troops.
The activists also claimed that seven armored vehicles, including tanks, were destroyed and others were seized.
Having proclaimed on Tuesday that the Syrian military had taken five villages and cut off Busra al-Harir, State news agency SANA makes no reference at all this morning to the offensive.
The defeat is the latest significant setback for the Assad regime since the start of the year. In the south, rebels have steadily advanced from Quneitra Province in the southwest, near the demilitarized zone with Israel, across Daraa Province and reaching the borders of Suweida Province. Earlier this month, they took the historic town of Busra al-Sham, near the Jordanian frontier, and the regime’s last border crossing with Jordan.
