Erg grappig trouwens dat je eerst om bewijs vraagt en er vervolgens niet eens inhoudelijk op in gaat, wat wilde je bereiken met je vraag?

Maar bedankt dat je me gelijk geeft over minstens 90% collateral damage. In het vervolg mag je dan meteen deze reactie geven, dat bespaart mij de tijd om het artikel te posten.

Het Syrische leger had zo'n 5000 main battle tanks en zo rond de 1000 self propelled guns. Die zijn lang niet allemal de schijt in gegaan. Ook nog zo rond de 5000 pantservoertuigen + talloos anders spul.

Wellicht hebben ze de helft naar z'n grootje geholpen? Ken wat dat betreft de getallen niet hoor...

The US Defense Secretary has told Congress that he does not know if Washington has legal authority to protect Syrian rebels whom it trains from attack by President Assad’s forces.

Ash Carter told a Senate hearing, “My understanding of that question is that we don’t foresee that happening any time soon, but a legal determination, I’m told by the lawyers, has not been made, whether we would have authority to do that or not.”

The US has said that training will begin in late March of a force of “moderate” rebels, with a vision that they will confront the Islamic State. Washington has set a target of 3,000 men trained and equipped for battle by the end of 2015.

The ISIL currently controls parts of Iraq and Syria. It started its campaign of terror in Iraq in early June 2014. The heavily-armed militants took control of Mosul before sweeping through parts of the country’s Sunni Arab heartland.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that it will not interfere militarily in Iraq and Syria, but that it will continue to provide support for both countries against ISIL in the form of defense consultation and humanitarian aid.

Iraq’s President Fuad Masum and First Vice President Nouri al-Maliki have acknowledged Tehran’s assistance in the anti-terror campaign.

Iran-Qatar ties

The visit saw the senior Iranian official meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Foreign Minister Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah, and Chairman of the Qatari Consultative Assembly Mohammed bin Mubarak al-Khulaifi.

Meeting with the Qatari foreign minister, Larijani said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran treats the Qatari emir’s observations regarding the regional issues as positive and is after the expansion of cooperation based on mutual respect.”

“The establishment of security and development in the Middle East region would materialize through the assistance of all the regional countries,” the Iranian official added.

The Qatari official said what the countries shared was more than what they differed on and that they had to take steps towards the development of bilateral relations based on common ground.

Nuclear talks

Larijani said Iran’s nuclear talks with the P5+1 group -- Britain, France, China, the United States and Russia plus Germany -- have featured progress.

However, he said, “We had to prioritize an intellectual perspective of the talks over a business-minded one.”

Iran and the P5+1 are seeking to seal a comprehensive nuclear deal by July 1. The two sides have already missed two self-imposed deadlines for inking a final agreement since they signed an interim one in the Swiss city of Geneva in November 2013.

A new United Nations-backed report details the economic and societal devastation of the four-year war in Syria, where the violence of a multiparty civil conflict has become further inflamed by a multinational battle against Islamic State militants.

The report, released Tuesday, says the war has cost the Syrian economy an estimated $202.6 billion dollars and brought "drastic levels of inequality and inequity" to people across the country who struggle to find food.

The result has been a spike in unemployment, which shot from about 15 percent at the start of the war in 2011 to nearly 58 percent by the end of last year. That left almost 4 million people out of work in a country where the population has also dropped from about 21 million to 17.5 million since the fighting began.

"The ruinous decent into poverty in Syria continued in 2014 when just over four in every five Syrians lived in poverty," the report said.

There has been no real progress in bringing a political resolution to the conflict. The fighting has killed 220,000 people, sent 3.8 million refugees into neighboring countries and forced another 6.8 million to flee their homes within Syria.

The Syrian Center for Policy Research authored the report, supported by the U.N. Development Program and the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, which operates camps within Syria.

According to the report, the years of violence have had a particular effect on Syrian children, with half of them no longer attending school and many missing three years of classes. The U.N. said in December that a quarter of the country's schools had been damaged or destroyed, along with half of its hospitals.

"Equally horrendous is the silent disaster that has reduced life expectancy at birth from 75.9 years in 2010 to an estimated 55.7 years at the end of 2014," the report says, "reducing longevity and life expectancy by 27 percent."

Military justice proceedings against Cosar were launched last autumn while he was still in Syria. In December 2014, Cosar told the Swiss newspaper Le Temps that his intention in travelling to Syria was never to fight – instead, he first worked as a journalist for Italian-language Swiss media.

“I didn’t go to Syria intending to fight,” he said. “I found myself in the middle of a civil war, in a situation where you have to take up arms to protect yourself.”
Cosar is of Syriac origin – a Christian minority currently among groups being targeted by IS fighters. After going to Syria to “see with my own eyes what was happening on the ground”, as Cosar told Le Temps, the former Swiss army sergeant helped found the Syriac Military Council, a group intended to help Christian minorities defend themselves against IS aggression.

“I started looking at their lack of organisation, so I began to give some tips to the Assyrian guys here on starting the militia, and that became my new role,” he recently explained to the magazine Foreign Policy.
However, although he relied on his Swiss army training in building up the Syriac Military Council, Cosar has frequently told the media that his decision to fight in Syria has nothing to do with Switzerland, nor does it pose a threat to the country where he was raised.
“I didn’t do anything against Switzerland and I’m sure the Swiss understand this,” he told German news outlet Deutsche Welle last year.

According to Article 94 of Swiss military law, any Swiss “who enlists in foreign military service without the authorisation of the cabinet will be punished with a fine or a prison sentence of up to three years”.
