Nederlander uren gekidnapt in Gaza

Een Nederlandse consultant die voor de Nederlandse regering in de Gazastrook werkt, is dinsdag acht uur lang door onbekende gemaskerde mannen in de Gazastrook vastgehouden. Het Nederlandse ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft woensdag berichtgeving daarover van het Palestijnse persbureau Maan bevestigd. De daders achter de ontvoering zouden hebben gezegd dat ze tot de terreurbeweging IS behoren.

Mohammad al-Mughayyir, een 31-jarige consultant met de Nederlandse nationaliteit, werd dinsdagmiddag door gemaskerde mannen gekidnapt in Gaza-Stad. Hij werkt voor de Nederlandse diplomatieke vertegenwoordiging in de Palestijnse stad Ramallah op de Westelijke Jordaanoever. Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken kon nog geen details geven over de achtergronden van de ontvoering.

Een familielid van al-Mughayyir klapte tegen het Franse persbureau AFP wel uit de school. „Mohammed werd rond 08.00 uur 's morgens ontvoerd uit zijn huis in Gaza-stad. Ze sloegen hem in de boeien en brachten hem naar een onbekende locatie waar hij acht uur lang werd ondervraagd over zichzelf en zijn werk voor Nederland.”

Volgens Mughayyir zelf is hij „ontvoerd en geslagen”, verder wilde hij niets zeggen. Hij is na zijn vrijlating in het Al-Shifa ziekenhuis in Gaza-Stad aan wonden op zijn benen verpleegd, aldus een ziekenhuismedewerker. Woensdagochtend werd hij uit het ziekenhuis ontslagen.

De Hamasbeweging die het voor het zeggen heeft op de Gazastrook bemoeit zich met de zaak. „Veiligheidstroepen hebben een onderzoek ingesteld om uit te zoeken wie achter deze aanval zit”, maakte de beweging woensdag bekend.

Naast Hamas is ook de militante Islamitische Jihad-beweging actief in de Gazastrook. In januari werd bij een demonstratie tegen de publicatie van de Mohammed-cartoons in het Franse satirische weekblad Charlie Hebdo openlijk gezwaaid met vlaggen van terreurbeweging Islamitische Staat.

The diplomats held posts in Switzerland, India and Jerusalem (al-Quds), Israeli media reported.

Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Emmanuel Nahshon, confirmed the report but declined to provide additional details.

The three diplomats twitted on Tuesday criticizing Netanyahu for planning a speech before the US Congress on Iran's nuclear program.

Netanyahu’s speech has not been coordinated with the White House and is expected to deepen rifts within the US administration.

Dozens of American lawmakers have already threatened not to attend the speech to protest Netanyahu’s visit to Washington.

Israeli media reported that the diplomats could face dismissal over their remarks.

The comments come a month ahead of Israel's national election, which is widely seen as a referendum on the performance of right-wing Netanyahu, who is spending his third term in office.



Domestic discord

The Israeli regime has been facing criticism over a number of issues, including its aggression against Palestinians and Netanyahu’s handling of economic problems.

Last month, the Israeli military dismissed over 40 soldiers for publicly criticizing the Tel Aviv regime’s crimes against Palestinians following Israel’s 50-day offensive on the Gaza Strip last summer.

In 2013, thousands of Israelis took to streets in different cities to protest against Tel Aviv’s austerity measures, which have led to growing poverty and unemployment.

The protests were initially triggered by soaring housing prices, but quickly evolved into a sweeping expression of rage against a wide array of economic issues, including the cost of food, gasoline and education.

There are reports that an increasing number of Israelis are renouncing their citizenship in search of a better life.

The United Nations is set to launch an inquiry into the death of a Spanish peacekeeper in clashes between Lebanon and Israel last month.

A senior UN official said on Wednesday that a fact-finding report by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was already being prepared and its result would be presented to the UN Security Council in the coming days.

Lance Corporal Francisco Javier Soria Toledo was killed in an exchange of fire between Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah and the Israeli regime earlier in the day.

Ten days earlier, six Hezbollah members and Brigadier General Mohammad Ali Allahdadi, an Iranian general, lost their lives in an Israeli aerial assault on the Syrian section of the Golan Heights.

Hezbollah launched the January 28 retaliatory attack on a military convoy in northern occupied territories, killing two Israeli soldiers and destroying at least nine Israeli military vehicles.
