Wat een mooi portret van een prachtige loopster. Zij loopt echt heel mooi, vooral die afdalingen enzo. Als ik afdaal probeer ik daar altijd op te lijken, qua stijl dan, niet qua haar.

En dan lees je nu dit:

VASTUS INTERMEDIUS: A COMPLETE TEAR
Written by Kristian Day on behalf of Ruby Muir.
While racing during the winter of this year, Ruby had a fall which resulted in an injured knee. Over the following kilometres her condition worsened and eventually led the her withdrawing from the race. While disappointed, neither of us figured her injury was overly serious and decided to give her knee 2-3 weeks to recover and the re-assess.
After a month or so of limited activity we consulted a physiotherapist who agreed with our original thoughts that the injury was nothing serious. After another 1-2 months Rubys leg gradually began to heal and she continued to train and run, although in a limited capacity. Eventually after 4 months of limited training, Ruby had a Ultrasound which showed up some major swelling around the knee and some serious damage to her Vastus intermedius muscle. We were then referred to an orthopedic surgeon for a more comprehensive MRI.
The results from the MRI showed a complete tear of the Vastus Intermedius muscle, which has now retracted up her thigh. The injury is inoperable and she now has zero use of this muscle. The muscle will never repair and this will be a “disability” that Ruby will have for the rest of her life. The Vastus Intermedius is one of the four muscle that make up the quadriceps and obviously this may have a severe affect on the capacity Ruby is able to train and race in the future.
During the time since the initial injury, Ruby has managed limited training and still maintained some racing success. Obviously at times there is major discomfort, while at other times her leg seems totally normal. This is a rare case and we have no information on how her problem will progress. There is hope that as time goes on, the other three muscles in her thighs will grow and compensate for the loss of the other. This of course, is not guaranteed and may never happen at all. We have also been informed that it is unlikely her injury will further deteriorate, therefore there is no positive outcome gained from complete cessation of physical activity. However this does not rule out the possibility of developing further issues related to muscle imbalances and reduced range of motion.
While the fact Ruby can still walk, run and lead a comfortable life is a major positive, it is a real possibility that she will never return to the form she has seen in the past 3-4 years. Therefore over the next 6-12 months we will be finding the limitations of her condition and be adjusting training and running accordingly. This will include participating in the upcoming Kepler challenge. In this regard, we have both decided that the best course of action is be completely transparent and release this information to the greater ultra community.
Thank you for your consideration,
Ruby and Kristian.

Misschien dus nu al nooit meer op niveau. Al zou het kunnen dat de andere spieren het kunnen opvangen. Maar dat is nog allemaal niet zeker. Dan ben je zo jong en pas sinds kort echt doorgebroken. Balen...
