http://www.reddit.com/r/M(...)dirt_on_duke/cm4sc6hStory time if anyone's interested...I joined Duke's gym 9 years ago. I've been training on and off this whole time. Purely a recreational student, no interest in competing--just wanted to challenge myself.
A little background--I've been in martial arts since I was 8. Started out with TKD, then JKD, then BJJ. At the time I joined, Duke was still a pure kickboxing gym. He was just warming up to MMA.
Within my first month of training, I was paired with a guy (I find out later he's a pro fighter) who throws me a hard knee to the body. We're doing drills, not even sparring. So I go out for a month with bruised ribs. This was under the supervision of a coach...
We had certain coaches who allowed sparring sessions to escalate, where we would start throwing with bad intentions. I can only remember one instance of a coach (who's since left Duke's) intervene because he saw we stopped sparring and started scrapping.
Some classes were an amalgamation of brand new students, experienced students and pro or amateur fighters, all drilling together with no distinctions made b/t skill levels. So you partner up with a jacked 19 year old kid who wants to rip your head off, then next round you get a stay-at-home mom who just wants to get a good workout.
Things changed over the years and they implemented a sensible ranking system, but the culture stayed the same. Coaches turned the other cheek if two of us really started going at it in a sparring session. I broke my thumb on two different occasions doing this. Granted I was a guilty party, but a conscientious coach would know to let his guys test themselves but not get out of control.
Coach Cushman is very old school. He humiliates and berates his students. If he sees you doing something wrong, he stops class, has you repeat the bad technique on him, then counters the living shit out of your lazy jab, combo, kick, etc. I didn't mind this treatment not b/c I'm tough or anything, but I was accustomed to it from my TKD days. But others were visibly shaken and some would be on the verge of tears.
If anyone's still reading this wall of text, thanks.
