People's Front of Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has gained 22.17% of the vote in the Verkhovna Rada elections now that the Ukrainian Central Election Commission has counted 99% of ballots. The Petro Poroshenko Bloc has received 21.81%.

Data posted on the interactive display at the Central Elections Commission's press center shows that Samopomich has gained 10.99% of the vote, the Opposition Bloc – 9.38%, the Radical Party – 7.44%, and Batkivschyna – 5.68%.

The other parties and blocs have failed to pass the 5% election threshold, to which the nationalist Svoboda party is close with 4.71% of the vote.

Yatseniuk: People's Front initiates coalition and proposes premier as winner of elections

The People's Front Party, as the leader of parliamentary elections in 2014, initiates the creation of a coalition and proposes the candidacy of prime minister, party leader Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

"In accordance with European practice, the party that got the first place in the elections must start the process of forming a coalition. I announced the coalition formation principles. If the coalition is formed on these principles, then it would be objective that the leader of the party heads the government. If the coalition is not formed on these principles, then it would be absolutely normal that the other party assumes the process of forming the coalition. And then there will be another prime minister in the country," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"We got the first place in the elections," Yatseniuk said, explaining the leadership of the People's Front in the formation of the coalition.

Russian 'aid convoy' arrives in Donetsk and Luhansk

KYIV, October 31 /Ukrinform/. A column of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry has delivered the so-called "humanitarian aid" to Donetsk and Luhansk - with 50 trucks entering each of the two cities, TASS has reported.

"The Russian humanitarian convoy of approximately a hundred vehicles previously divided into two columns. Fifty trucks brought to each of the cities food and building materials weighing about 500 tonnes," reads the statement.

Yatseniuk orders payment for Russian gas

KYIV, October 31 /Ukrinform/. The Ukrainian Finance Ministry, the National Bank of Ukraine and Naftogaz of Ukraine will start paying for Russian natural gas.

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk made a respective instruction at a meeting of the anti-crisis energy headquarters on Friday, a Ukrinform correspondent reported.

"I am instructing the Finance Ministry, the National Bank and Naftogaz of Ukraine, in accordance with the signed trilateral protocol between Ukraine, the EU and our neighbors, to start financial payments under this protocol, both for the gas received and for additional pumping of natural gas by the end of the year," Yatseniuk said.

KYIV, October 31 /Ukrinform/. Ukraine plans to purchase up to four billion cubic meters of gas from Russia this year and has the money to pay for this gas.

Ukrainian Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan said this after productive gas negotiations involving the European Commission in Brussels, the 24 news channel reported.

"Ukraine plans to buy up to four billion cubic meters of gas. This is our benchmark... We have the necessary funds," he said.

Work on a huge shelter to contain the radioactivity at the site of the deadly Chernobyl nuclear disaster passed a “landmark” moment on Friday.

Effectively the New Safe Confinement NSC is a tough shell around the remains of the nuclear reactor in Ukraine which was destroyed in 1986.

It took a full day to successfully lift the second half to its full height of 110 metres, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) which runs the cash fund for the nuclear safety project.

Stretching to 260 metres long, 165 metres wide and weighing more than 30,000 tonnes, it resembles a huge aircraft hangar.

It will be strong enough to withstand a tornado, with a “sophisticated” ventilation system meant to “eliminate” the risk of corrosion so it can last at least 100 years, said the EBRD.
