Syri is een seculiere republiek met 22,5 miljoen inwoners en heeft sinds 2000 als president Bashar al-Assad. In de presidentsverkiezingen van 2014 won hij met 88,7% van twee tegenkandidaten. Voor 2000 was vanaf 1971 zijn vader Hafiz al-Assad aan de macht die in 1981 een gewelddadige opstand van het Moslimbroederschap neersloeg. Nadat eind 2010 in Tunesi demonstraties begonnen en daarbij Ben Ali werd verjaagd verspreiden de demonstraties zich door de hele regio waaronder in Syri. Volgens delen van de oppositie werd er door de overheid op vreedzame demonstranten geschoten.
In reactie op de demonstraties kondigde Assad hervormingen aan, er werd een nieuwe grondwet aangenomen waarin niet langer stond dat de Ba'ath-partij, een Arabisch nationalistische en socialistische partij, de staat en de samenleving leid en er ook andere politieke partijen mochten gevormd worden die niet lid zijn van het National Progressive Front, wel mochten partijen niet gebaseerd zijn op religie of etnische basis. Vervolgens werden er in 2012 parlementsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook partijen die niet lid zijn van het NPF zetels wonen, door de rebellen werden deze verkiezingen als ondemocratisch en oneerlijk beschouwd. In juni 2014 werden er presidentsverkiezingen gehouden waarbij ook andere kandidaten dan Assad mochten meedoen, dit werd door de rebellen ook als een farce gezien.
Tot nu toe zijn er in de oorlog meer dan 150.000 doden gevallen. Etnische groepen spelen een belangrijke rol in de oorlog, Syri bestaat voor 74% uit soennieten (van wie 10% Koerden), 13% sjiieten (met de alawieten als belangrijkste subgroep), 10% christenen en 3% druzen.
Een factor in de oorlog zijn de Koerden, een volk van 35 miljoen mensen met een eigen taal en cultuur, maar geen eigen land. Ze zijn verspreid over onder meer Turkije, Syri, Irak (Iraaks-Koerdistan), Iran en de vroegere Sovjet-Unie. De Syrische Koerden vechten tegen zowel de regering als de rebellen. Ze hebben in de door hun bestuurden gebieden autonomie uitgeroepen. Net als de regering zijn ze seculier.

IS(IS) - soennitische terreurorganisatie dat zowel in Irak als in Syri opereert. Iedereen die niet soennitisch is loopt kans onthoofd te worden door deze groepering. In februari 2014 verbrak Al-Qaeda de banden met IS. IS heeft aan zowel de regering als de andere rebellen groepen de oorlog verklaart.
Landen die de rebellen steunen: NAVO-landen, Jordani, Libi, Tunesi, VAE, Saudi-Arabi en Qatar. De voornaamste reden van die landen om de rebellen te steunen is het bondgenootschap van Syri met Iran en Rusland, en de steun aan Hezbollah.

SAA Captures ISIS Base in Deir Ezzor; Scores of ISIS Fighters Killed
The Syrian Arab Army’s 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard liberated the imperative Al-Ba’ajeen School in the Jubeileh Quarter of Deir Ezzor City on Saturday. The school was used by the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) as a control-and-command center for all terrorist operations in the Deir Ezzor District. According to a military source, the 104th Brigade killed over 60 militants and wounded/captured 30 more in the process of liberating the school.
The Syrian Air Force carried out a wave of airstrikes over the weekend, targeting ISIS gatherings in the eastern Deir Ezzor district of Al-Mayadeen. The airstrikes destroyed 2 pick-up trucks mounted with 23 mm machine gun turrets and scores of ISIS militants. According to sources in Deir Ezzor, 2 ISIS field commanders were killed during the airstrike, including Abu Khabaab Al-Nidooneesi and Abu Saheeb Al-Yemeni. Also perishing with the two ISIS field commanders was the wife of Al-Yemeni, Rouqaya ‘Abdullah (Algerian). She is believed to have wed Al-Yemeni during her sex jihad to Syria.
ISIS militants attempted to infiltrate the Fu’adh Cinema in the Deir Ezzor District; however, they were repulsed by the 104th Brigade and NDF fighters. The 104th Brigade was assisted by Syrian Air Force Hind Helicopters that bombarded ISIS militants attempting to flank the cinema. 17 ISIS fighters were killed during the battle, including 2 Chadians and 1 Malaysian.
Also in the Jubeileh Quarter, the Syrian Arab Army destroyed a 35 meter tunnel that housed dozens of ISIS fighters and stored a large quantity of weapons and ammunition. The tunnel’s discovery led to the SAA’s liberation of the Al-Ba’ajeen school, as it was used to supply entrenched ISIS fighters. 23 ISIS fighters were reportedly killed by the SAA,
Multiple airstrikes from the Anti-ISIS Coalition and the Syrian Air Force were reported from the Deir Ezzor countryside, where the latter specifically targeted ISIS gatherings in Mouhassan. The Syrian Air Force destroyed 4 vehicles loaded with doshkas belonging to ISIS fighters in the city; meanwhile, U.S. aircrafts targeted ISIS gatherings near the salt mines in east Deir Ezzor. The Coalition airstrikes have dissipated over the last two weeks, as ISIS militants have been forced to seek shelter from the persistent attacks.
Over 175 ISIS fighters have been killed over the last 10 days of fighting in the Deir Ezzor District.

Evidently, ISIS is a threat to humanity. Due to the fact that YPG is highly outgunned by ISIS with looted weapons, YPG is unable to stop the Jihadists. It is undoubted that with better and more modern weapons, YPG would efficiently halt ISIS’ motives to gain control of Kobane.

Syria’s UN envoy has accused Turkey and Saudi Arabia of giving weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) to terrorist groups fighting in the country. The charge precedes reports Kurdish fighters battling ISIS militants have been attacked with chemical weapons.
Bashar Jaafari told a UN committee on Friday that Turkey and Saudi Arabia should examine their own involvement in the Syrian conflict before leveling “null and baseless accusations [against] the Syrian government."
In comments delivered to the UN’s First Committee on Disarmament and International Security at the UN General Assembly, Jaafari accused Ankara and Riyadh of being “directly involved in providing these terrorist organizations with chemical weapons,” RIA-Novosti cites a source as saying.
He further accused the countries of helping finance groups attempting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. He singled out Turkey in particular for allegedly supporting over 100 militant organizations currently active in Syria.
Rather than lend “a helping hand” to help Damascus put a halt to the crisis currently engulfing the country, the Turkish government has become “one of the main support bases for these terrorist organizations,” the Israeli- daily Haaretz cites Jaafari as saying.

Met 150 kilo blaas je echt geen kleine stad op. Hooguit een flat mits je het volgens precisie demolitie kundig aanbrengt.
Semtex is ongeveer 1,5x zo sterk als TNT, het is dus 225 KG eq TNT echt niet voldoende zelfs om een dorp mee plat te gooien.

The Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) recent gains in the farm lands of the Rif Dimashq Governate known as the “East Ghouta” has created a tremendous amount of apprehension for Jaysh Al-Islam fighters entrenched in the area. With the 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard pushing towards the liberation of the vital Jobar District, Jaysh Al-Islam finds itself surrounded in the areas once considered untouchable for the SAA.
Yesterday, the 105th Brigade liberated the rebel-stronghold of Wadi ‘Ayn Tarma, capturing the entire valley and 8 square kilometers around the neighboring villages. The success of this operation was contingent on the Syrian Air Force’s persistent aerial bombardments with bunker busters in order to obstruct the rebel’s underground supply routes. Once the underground tunnels were exposed and obstructed by the 105th Brigade, Jaysh Al-Islam was forced to retreat east, while the Republican Guards crossed the Barada River.
According to a military source, nearly 180 Jaysh Al-Islam fighters were reportedly killed during this one month long siege of Wadi ‘Ayn Tarma. Among the dead militants was the Jaysh Al-Islam field commander of operations in Wadi ‘Ayn Tarma, ‘Abdel-Majid Al-Sayyid ‘Ali. His body was discovered among the fighters attempting to retreat from the area yesterday – he possessed a Syrian identification card.
In Jobar, the Republican Guard now controls 70% of the district, as the Jaysh Al-Islam fighters are encircled in the area. The 105th Brigade has advanced to the Maysaloun Roundabout, where they are currently engaging Jaysh Al-Islam militants in the surrounding neighborhoods. If Jaysh Al-Islam loses Parliament Square in the coming days, the siege of the Jobar District will be complete.
Fierce firefights have been reported from the city of Harasta, where Jaysh Al-Islam fighters broke a ceasefire agreement with the National Defense Forces (NDF). As a result, the SAA has begun an operation to thwart the militants from the city. The SAA captured multiple lab facilities earlier today and a multitude of building blocks from Jaysh Al-Islam fighters.
